It has been my opinion, along w/ many other people, that Edson needs to be called up for the next friendly. His play in the month of August was outstading, thus earning him player of the month. His play in the US Open Cup match tonight was great. With superb technical skill he scored the first goal and had the game winning assist. Bruce needs to call him up A.S.A.P. I think he would bring a lot to the table for the National Team. So what are your thoughts?

watched the game as well...buddle was very impressive...but made some basic mistakes...sometimes mistrapping the ball or failing to see the overlapping run....i think it was maise who was making it....

the mistrap here and there happens to everyone...the rest of the stuff will go away as he gets some experience....

but yes...he deserves a call up....

from a team that was starving for forwards only 3-4 years ago...it seems we have too many.

With qualifying as much of a grind as it is too much depth turns into just enough depth very quickly. Having guys who can play a different role than they do on their club team isn't bad either.

Was Buddle playing midfield or forward tonite?

I saw the game and he seemed to be coming from the midfield a lot.

I agree with those who say in soccer, as in all sports, the trend is toward bigger, faster, stronger.

It's to early for a call-up with the full National squad. He's like 20 right? I don't think he should see any important call-ups until after the Olympics.

The kid is good, but it's to early for him to get a call-up. We don't really need help up front, since we can now consider the USMNT loaded up top.

i think he started out at right wing tonight before moving up front later on, when he became much more effective...

if he continues his progress, he'll be called up soon enough...

I have sen him only a little but he seems to have talent. I agree that you can NEVER have too many good players, good strikers. Even now, Wolff is out, Mathis is ????, Landon is playing well but not scoring much- new blood like Buddle and Twellman is MORE than welcome!

I don't see how we're "loaded" up front. We have some good young forwards. Many of whom have been or are injured. I'd be cautious about any predictions of a plethora of talent.

If the U-23 team has any games/camps coming up then I would let him stay there. If not, then yes bring him in. Twellman should get called in first but Buddle is looking good.

Buddle usually plays up top for the Crew, but was inserted in to the midfield for last night's US Open Cup miracle, for two reasons, first, Brian West is slightly banged up (he came on late, but was not fit to play the full 90) and in an attempt to get the Crew's top goal scorers on the field at once (McBride, Cunningham, Buddle). He will get his shot, when is up to Bruce, but I don't see the harm in it being sooner rather than later. I think a lot of young guys should get their cherries popped this Fall with the next WC 3 3/4 years away. That way, they know what to expect from camp, Bruce, etc if they get called in later on in a more pressing situation.

Buddle is 21 (DOB 5/2/81) which, as most of you know, is a year older than Beasley and Donovan were at this year's World Cup.

If DaMarcus and Landon can play at the game's biggest stage at age 20, then I think someone playing as well as Buddle is right now can play in a friendly or 2 at age 21.

Kid is raw but his upside is huge and he's putting the ball in the hole. As others have noted, there's no such thing as too much depth when it comes to qualifying so the more players we get some caps, the better.

we have alot of forwards coming up on the Nats level, buddle included, but i think that buddle will be one that wont get the playin time a rarelt get called up. Obvious that Twellman will get called up, he's Donovan but as a finisher. Plus we have Casey, not to mention Wolff and Mathis, and Johnson. Buddle is good, but I don't think he will beat any of those guys out for an upcoming friendly, maybe Johnson.

I am not sure the two players could be more different in technique or style of play.

    Agreed, playing well ...

Yup, a young talent. I was in the stands last weekend and saw him absolutely bury a perfect cross across the goal mouth against the Quakes ...

the more depth in the US player pool, the better, IMHO. When we can honestly say that the choice is between 15-20 forwards, and not 5-6, then we can say that we've "arrived."

I wouldn't call the US "loaded up front" based on our current crop of strikers. Only fair. Potential, yes, but bring on Twellman, Buddle, Cunningham et al. again, and let them battle it out for spots (like the rest of the world!).

I like Buddle's game. He should definitely be in the mix eventually. That being said the biggest weakness I have seen in his game is that his trapping and first touch ability still need some work. For a big target striker being able to control the ball first time is crucial. He has a way to go yet.

What I find interesting is the emergence of Buddle while we also have Conor Casey and Ed Johnson coming up. From what I last saw of Conor he is not nearly as talented as Buddle or EJ when dribbling at the defense. Eddie on the other hand has shown glimpses of talent that could well propel him past both Conor and Buddle. Basically, if EJ continues to improve I'm not sure that Buddle or Conor will ever see that much time starting for the Nats.

What I meant was that he gets the job done, he has boats full of skill and loads of talent, and basically has been gifted, like Donovan.

One could be a goalie. That would be more different.
