Media twisting someone's words for clicks, he just said the dutch league was the best place for a young player, didn't say anything about Ajax going for Lainez..

Also Lainez looking mini swole in that pic.

Alvarez has always had surprisingly good shooting with his feet for a tall defensive player, another reason why he's better off at midfield than the back 4.

I thought Alvarez had a decent match today. There was an interesting switch of strategy in the final eight minutes of the match. Ajax went into a 3-4-3 with Alvarez dropping back to the center of the back three and pushing the two FBs further up the field. Ajax have used this type of formation in the past. It looked like they were content with the draw in added time just passing the ball around.

Edson came off for Huntelaar. Ajax up 2-0 now.

He played as a RB at America before he was even called up to the National Team.

ETH wanted an extra attacker as the match was 0-0 at the half. Alvarez was just very ordinary in the first half and came off.

Edson comes off and Ajax scores 5. I hope this doesn’t affect his starting role.

Not sure how his role as a defensive midfielder (or potentially as a CB) would be influenced by how many goals his team scores. Especially a team like Ajax that is built to attack in waves, especially in a league like the Eredivisie that is attack heavy.

Plus it isn't as if Edson were the kind of player that actively hinders an attack or how those five goals after his exit cannot be counted as a coincidence.

    On the bench today

Ten Hag decided to go for Vd. Beek - Promes - Martinez

Has been lots of criticism about Martinez - Alvarez duo.

Because he and Lisandro Martínez are very similar footballers in that they’re both CBs/CDMs, defensive-minded and have limited creativity.

Already this season, they’ve struggled to break the bunker against Fortuna Sittard and Vitesse. Most of their high-scoring games, specifically the 5-0 against Emmen and the 4-1 against Venlo saw neither one in the midfield. The 4-1 against Rotterdam had Martínez playing CB. So there’s actually a solid evidence from what’s been played so far that having both in the midfield costs Ajax attack-wise.

I should probably clarify that I agree that Álvarez has been great. The problem is that if ten Hag decides to go with only one of the two players, it’ll most likely be Martínez. Rose-coloured glasses off, the guy has been exceptional and will most likely end up on a big team sooner rather than later.
