Anyone else notice how friggin' big Stokes looks in comparison to Ali Curtis (on his right) and Ryan Nelsen (left) in that picture?

    Wow.....

He sure looks like Eddie Pope and I hope he can play like him as well.

Having watched David Stokes since he was a sophomore at Hylton, the amazing thing is it seems he has always been that size. In high school, he was far and away the most athletically gifted player on the field, even if he was playing a position that didn't garner him the same notoriety as players like midfielder Kyle Rakow (Georgetown) and Tommy Adams (basketball at Hampton) got while playing for the Bulldogs.

But I think it was always clear to Krieger and anyone else who watched those teams closely that Stokes was The Man.

Putting the Pope label on him is a bit premature. But yes, the physical attributes in terms of height are there. I don't know how bulked up he is now (haven't seen him in a while), but he is good in the air and can most certainly fill that role of being a target on corners and deep restarts. If United is down a goal in a key game with 10 to play and Stokes doesn't start, it wouldn't shock me to see him inserted for just those situations, because he does have that eye for goal. If memory serves me, he scored the tying or winning goal in one of Hylton's state championships during his career against either West Springfield or Oakton. If he's still on the boards, B. Straus would know for sure on that one. I'm almost officially old and have blacked out much of my sportswriting memories.
