Okay, I don't get it. Why trade him? I need a quick economics lesson, please. The common reason given regards getting under the salary cap.

I understand there's a salary cap, somewhere around $1.73E+6 or something.

The minimum league pay is like $25K. Carrieri makes a whopping $55K and is clearly an up-and-comer in the league, one with decent experience and professionalism. If he starts to get his final touch on goal he'll be amazing.

Why is $30K so important that the Rapids would trade away or, worse, waive, him when they could possibly use him later to get a good trade or some cash, especially when he can still be useful to the team as is?

    Cheers,

    Not up to snuff

I think as far as Hanki's concerned, CC did not play up to snuff last year. But the same thing could be said about Hendo.

Although CC did not score a lot last year he was on fire (when he played forward). I like Henderson but would be willing to see him go to keep CC.

    Hanki's Mind:
    * CC didn't score much in 03
    * CC made me look bad with his comments
    * CC is shorter than Zizi => CC will ride the pine
    * CC won't be happy on the bench
    * CC will make me look bad again

I wonder how a 4-3-3 would perform with CC.

    Forward: CC & Zizi
    Withdrawn Forward: Spencer
    Midfield Chung, Becks, Powell
    Backline: Ritchie, Borchers, Pablo, Stewart/Suarez

CC would certainly be up for back tracking to cover the missing midfielder.

I'm for keeping Carrieri. At the moment we have Spencer, Zizi, and Carrieri as our main strikers. That's not a bad group by MLS standards. I've also listed them, I think at least, in reverse age order as well as reverse salary order. In a year or two will we have Spencer? How about this season, will he stay healthy? Same questions regarding Zizi. Carrieri is our present and future at striker. Trade him, and we'll be looking for a more expensive striker at about the time when Carrieri should be prime. Bad idea.

In midfield we have Chung, Beckerman, Powell, and Hendo. Chung shows no signs of slowing down. Powell is the classsic SI question mark. Beckerman hopefully will be the future of our midfield. Hendo is coming off a down season, and rumor was he might have considered retiring.

Midfield is where were looking at making age related changes over the next several season. Unless management is sure we can win this year with these guys then I'd say midfield is the place to drop a salary.

The downside of Hankinson's repreive with KSE is that his only hope is to make short term decisions. Dropping Carrieri would be a short term deal. The team would be better off if we kept him, but that would require a long view that Hankinson can't afford (irregardless of arguements of whether he should be able to).

I really hope they aren't forced to trade Carrieri. I think money as a reason stinks. The only reason I would consider trading him would be if he was an internal cancer to the team. I am not close enough to know that, but what I see on the field is someone who always works hard, runs like crazy, and draws attention away from other attacking players. He didn't score a lot of goals last year, that is true, but he was definitely an attacking force that helped others to score, particularly, John Spencer. Any other reason besides money is crazy, and giving up a proven player for such a small amount of cap space is double crazy. Imagine what kind of trouble we would be in if we had really tried to sign our highest draft choice. I am still of the opinion that the reason we made that pick was that KSE knew he would leave for England and wouldn't have to worry about his salary. Let's hope they do something with this soon so we can stop hypothesizing, and learn to live with the results. Come On Rapids, Get That WebSite Up!!!!!!! :(

Carrieri has a lot of energy in 2003.

I saw a couple of great pluses for him. He played both midfield and forward with excellent energy and no loss of aggressiveness that I could see. He also had great touches on the ball, and beat his defender a number of times to get into the box.

The biggest negative, however, was that he didn't seem to exhibit the killer, greedy stryker instinct last season. When crossed to, he mis-hit, and when he dribbled it in, he got by defenders but tended to pass when he needed to simply slam it home. When he did try to slam it, it invariably went wide, he wasn't able to target the goal effectively.

So, arguably, you have to take a risk in keeping him. Arguably, at $55,000, it's not a big risk given his excellent mid-field abilities and aggressiveness.

I'm pretty much struggling to comprehend why the Rapids would trade Carrieri just to reduce their over-the-cap numbers.

I could see them trading for a solid right back, but that doesn't solve the cap issue. There are other players I would get rid of long before Carrieri if the cap was the big issue and that's what I don't understand. It sounds like we might be getting Nick Garcia from LA, but that's just a rumor and certainly, they are taking their sweet time making that deal.

Where did the Garcia rumor come from. Is he no longer with KC?

I am guessing that you guys are going to have to release him. I dont see anybody trading for him. I am a dcUnited fan and we had to out right release Milton Reyes for salary cap reasons.
Dont plan on getting anything in return!

Wasn't Reyes a SI? I'd imagine that had a lot to do with it too.

Maybe he will accept a 20k a year pay cut to play with the Rapids. ;)

No, he's married to an American and has a green card. As a DC fan I hated losing him.

Yep, Suarez, my bad.... Geez, don't want to name drop the wrong guy for a trade. Pretty soon the KC board is going nuts about getting Carrieri for Nick Garcia.

I meant Ryan Suarez from LA.

Heard the Rapids are shopping Carrieri in exchange for a 2nd, round pick in the 2005 draft. After Spenny & ZiZI, we're certainly inexperienced at the forward position.

Not all that bad but a 1st rounder would really be nice. Better than having to waive him. Any word on which teams are interested?
