Didn't see this posted but East Tennessee State University hired former Clemson Assistent Scott Calabrese to start new D-1 program in 2008 http://www.etsubucs.com/sports/msoccer/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=9338
Re: ETSU New D-1 Soccer program 2nd year playing D1 and finish in third place in the A-Sun http://www.atlanticsun.org/msoccer/
Re: ETSU New D-1 Soccer program Scott Calabrese is a very talented young head coach and despite the weakness of the A-Sun as a conference he has done an outstanding job finishing 3rd in the second season. Close games against UNC (2-1 OT) and VA Tech (despite being weak this year -still ACC) (1-1) only show that ETSU is a program on the way up.
Re: ETSU New D-1 Soccer program Lights went up today at ETSU. Should be a good atmosphere at their 7 evening games this upcoming season, including #2 pre-season ranked UNC http://www.etsubucs.com/sports/msoccer/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=12715
Re: ETSU New D-1 Soccer program Just a thought, but should/can a mod modify the title? ETSU has been around for a few years, now.
Re: ETSU New D-1 Soccer program (Long-time lurker, saw this thread and felt the need to insert myself.) I actually do play-by-play for the Buccaneers. Summers-Taylor is a really nice facility considering the level of play in the Atlantic Sun (probably on par with NPSL), and there was a plan to add seating on the opposite side of the stadium from the press box as well, but there hasn't been any action on that yet (although the university drags its feet on pretty much everything these days; the lights were supposed to be up when the team went D-I). Calabrese is a very good coach and a genuinely nice guy, and he brought in a great recruiting class (I actually did a preview piece on the team back in July on my blog, if you'll forgive the self-promotion). David Geno is a legend at nearby Dobyns-Bennett, Itode Fubara really impressed me in the spring with his technical ability, Mario Samperio captained the Guatemalan U-20 team, and Blaike/Blake Woodruff was on ESPNRise's Winter All-Texas Team. Of course, it feels like I'm the only person that really cares. Most folks around here aren't really familiar with or are indifferent to the sport; many of them are still upset over the football program being discontinued in 2004, and those who are left are almost exclusively basketball fans. Still, I'll try to post regular updates for the program here on BS.
Re: ETSU New D-1 Soccer program We stream a video feed to ASun.TV, but it's a pay-per-view service hosted by Neulion (the same people who do video hosting for MLS and the NHL and all of their respective clubs). Championship games are sometimes free, and Lipscomb University broadcast the conference baseball tournament for free last June.
The only preseason game we have on film was the one that ETSU played tonight, against, Tusculum, and we got caught off guard (the athletic department decided not to tell anyone on our production crew that the game was moved up 90 minutes) so we only have half that game. We won the game 3-2 in front of an excellent (and in some cases, body-painted) crowd of students. David Geno opened the scoring with a real beaut, and probably played the best game of anyone on the field, although that doesn't say much. Even Calabrese and Guilherme Reis (our captain) openly admitted that the team didn't play well. One thing that really shocked me was that Sean Hoek, who was our best player last season and a second-team all-conference selection, is no longer on the roster. I asked our SID what happened to him and he did his best to dance around the answer. It's a shame to see such a promising talent leave. He's our all-time leading goal scorer, as well. We do have a lot of talent, though. All four guys I mentioned in my first post were in the starting XI tonight. Calabrese really likes Geno. Geno also called me "sir" when I interviewed him, which was pretty funny since I'm all of two years older than he is. EDIT: Recap of tonight's game.
Some of the folks in our athletic department were upset with some of the things I had posted because of my affiliation with the program. I won't say who or what or why. I've actually considered taking the blog down for a while because it's really tough for me to maintain this sort of thing consistently, and about so many sports (I still have yet to do anything on volleyball), but I think I'll keep it going. I have no intention of making in a straight news blog (that's what the school website is for) or be a mouthpiece for the athletic department. That said, I had no intention of stepping on anyone's toes when I started this blog. I only wanted to give what I think is an often-overlooked athletics program some exposure beyond the student newspaper. Basketball and the thought of a revived football program are all that will get ETSU athletics in non-student media these days, and I wanted to give the smaller sports some exposure. We have great coaches, in particular Calabrese and Tony Skole (our baseball coach; he's a dynamite recruiter). We have some really talented athletes, from Gui Reis to Mike Smith to Paul Hoilman, and they all deserve exposure, and if nobody outside of the school paper (not to knock their coverage; baseball gets good write-ups in the spring) will cover these teams, then by God, I will. [/rant] Men's team opens its regular season at Furman on Wednesday, and the ladies are here tonight against TN-Wesleyan.
Thanks for the info, keep it coming I say......Division 1 soccer in Tennessee needs all the press it can get!!!!
The men dropped their regular season opener to the Furman Paladins, 1-0 (box score). The women will play under the lights in the first ever night game at Summers-Taylor tonight against King College.
Nope. I've been having back spasms all weekend, so there's no way I was going to South Carolina. That, plus I have no money for gas. The wonders of being a college student...
It is free to view on here http://clemsontigers.cstv.com/allaccess/index.html?media=190744 0-0 at the half, I would say ETSU has had the better offensive play, a couple of corners in the box, but Clemson nearly got one just before halftime.
ETSU 1-0 over Clemson with a PK in the second period of overtime. Robbed off a goal with a couple of seconds to go at the end of regulation time.
I think beating Clemson was a good win for many programs maybe 10 years ago. Now they are just an average program. If beating Clemson is considered a big win this year, many teams will be able to boast that victory.
I would think so, maybe even bigger than it usually would be as ETSU head coach was an assistant at Clemson before getting the ETSU head coaching job. They beat Elon in 2008.
Men knock off Bradley 2-1 in Evansville, IN, while the women fell to Temple 1-0 at home, their first home loss of the season.
Bucs best Winthrop in home debut under the lights. (Box score here). I totally blew a goal call where Schoenfeld sent one off the exterior fencing and into the back of the netting, instead of tucking it in on the near post, but he scored later anyway, so I'm completely okay with that.
Scott and Ian are doing an awesome job at ETSU. It looks like it will be ETSU and FGCU fighting for the top spot in the A-Sun. BTW, anytime a program can beat an ACC school thats an great win for the program. Who cares if Clemson is down?!? Where is Danny Ford??????
