The schedule for the qualifying round will be announced on the 27th November at a draw ceremony in Taipei, Taiwan.

Six teams: Guam, Hong Kong, Macao, Mongolia, North Korea, and hosts Taiwan will battle it out for one place in the finals to be played in South Korea. China, Japan & South Korea qualify automatically for the final tournament. I can't see anyone stopping North Korea winning this. I think the only reason Hong Kong qualified the last time is because North Korea didn't take part. Anyone have any other predictions?

I agree that NK will advance. I will venture to go with Korea to win it all given that final will be in Korea.

    WOW, I mustn't miss that.

NK can make it to the finals quite easily I think and hope so as well.

having seen Hong Kong quite recently, I guess beating them will be an easy task for a team preparing for the final round of the Asian WCQs.

This is a weird tournament, I think... it's probably only really exciting for the six teams who are battling it out to get to the finals.... or am I being jaded?

does anyone know what the rough DATES are for the finals in Korea?

Hey, buggy. Long time no see.

Anytime Japan and Korea battles, it is exciting. Because many Korean fans don't like China, Korea vs China match will also draw crowd. I think it's a nice little tournament. BTW, Korea won the first one.

There is a EAFF.com site but they don't say what date the final will be held. It's a bi-annual tournament and last one was held on Oct/03. So, I am assuming the finals will be held in fall/05?

helloo, rkim... :) you're right, the rivalries can bring a good amount of interest to the games. Since there was no KoreavJapan games this year, and probably not any friendlies next year, this EAFF tournie would be at least the best way for Japan and Korea to play -- better than a friendly, I think. And this next one will be very different from the one before... the one before had some lukewarm teams (which was why I wasn't that initially excited about it), but this next one, in the thick of WCQ and so close to Germany, would present very (hopefully) tuned-up, motivated teams in Korea, NK, Japan, and China (who would be out to prove something here against rivals).

I would hope that this takes place in the fall of 05, like you said... though I read somewhere that it may be during the summer (august?).

Just a note to say that the last tournament was held in December 2004. South Korea won the tournament after drawing 0-0 with the hosts Japan. This meant the two teams finished level on points and goal difference, but South Korea had scored one more goal than Japan in their other two games. I think that North Korea would put up a better fight than Hong Kong did at the last tournament.

Results from 2003 final tournament in Japan
    4th December - Japan 2-0 China
4th December - South Korea 3-1 Hong Kong
    7th December - Japan 1-0 Hong Kong
    7th December - South Korea 1-0 China
    10th December - China 3-1 Hong Kong
    10th December - Japan 0-0 South Korea

    TABLE
    (P-W-D-L-F-A-PTS)
    South Korea 3-2-1-0-4-1-7
    Japan 3-2-1-0-3-0-7
    China 3-1-0-2-3-4-3
    Hong Kong 3-0-0-3-2-7-0

and for anyone who is interested ....

The qualifying tournament in Hong Kong

    North Korea withdrew

    22nd March - Hong Kong 2-0 Taiwan
    22nd March - Macao 2-0 Mongolia
    24th March - Hong Kong 3-0 Macao
    24th March - Mongolia 2-0 Guam
    26th March - Macao 2-0 Guam
    26th March - Taiwan 4-0 Mongolia
    28th March - Hong Kong 10-0 Mongolia
    28th March - Taiwan 7-0 Guam
    2nd April - Hong Kong 11-0 Guam
    2nd April - Taiwan 2-1 Macao

    TABLE

Good stuff, mcruic. Thanks for the post.

BTW, looking at Hong Kong's record in that tournament, they are too good to lose 7:0 to China in recent Asian qualifying for WC06.

it's no worth. ignorant fans are all just hyped up and brainwashed with stupid assumption that crap team called north korea became a powerhouse all of the sudden. but still, nk would be oman of the next year if only they win the preliminary stage of eaff cup and they're drawn with us in the wcq, meaning that they will have an opportunity to play with japan 3 times and get spanked 3 times.

North Korea showed their ability in their 4-1 demolition of Thailand (home-and-away, not many Asian teams could do this). However, they also showed their limitations in the other games (drawing 0-0 and losing 1-0 to UAE, drawing 1-1 and beating Yemen 2-1).

Hong Kong on the other hand, have never beaten North Korea

    Played 7, N.Korea won 4, drawn 3

    01/06/75 - Hong Kong 3-3 North Korea
09/01/79 - North Korea 3-0 Hong Kong (in Thailand)
    28/12/80 - Hong Kong 2-2 North Korea
15/06/88 - North Korea 1-0 Hong Kong (in Nepal)
    27/05/89 - Hong Kong 1-2 North Korea
    02/07/89 - North Korea 4-1 Hong Kong
    07/06/92 - North Korea 0-0 Hong Kong

they should rename the competition back to dynasty cup again. Pretty much the same tournament and it sounded cooler, too.

btw, its either gonna be N.Korea or Hong Kong. No other teams are even close.

Tell me this you guys. Is this one of those tournaments where Teams like South Korea and Japan won't put their 1st team up front? Or is it going to be a serious competitive tournament?

I suppose Japan and South Korea will be too busy with World Cup qualifications and this tournament is not worth risking their 1st team players. If that is the case, this will be a perfect opportunity for China to do something. Since they are out of the world cup picture, they would have to concentrate on midiocre tournament like this to boost up their Fifa rankings. It's pathetic but it's better than nothing.

Next summer,Japan participates in four competition, EAFC, WCQ, KIRIN CUP, and The Confederations Cup.
EAFC is competition with the lowest priority for Japan in these four.
Probably the 2nd or the third team will participate.

Never heard of 3rd team ... I don't think they exist.

Korea at the worst will send players from K-league, 1.5th team (not 2nd, not 3rd).

    Full squads!?
    Impossible...
    Our players will break.
The players who do not play in WCQ, CC, and KirinC will participate.

I know China is probably going to send the first team, since there is nothing else better to do. Unless the players are too spoiled and don't feel like to show up.

This does count towards Fifa rankings, so it's good to win.

Hey, it's better than the Tiger Cup right? ha ha ha
