I just uncovered this nugget on the US Soccer Referee Assignment website: http://ussoccer.gameofficials.net/p...=display&strGameLevel=[[[ALL]]]&iTeamID=45669 7/27/14 Time: [TBD] (Sunday) PRO - M CANDLESTICK PARK (SAN FRANCISCO, CA) SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs. ATLETICO MADRID Could this be true or is SJ a placeholder for a different opponent for Atletico Madrid? No listing at Ticketmaster. The Quakes do not have a MLS match that weekend. A quick DuckDuckGo search turned up this site, which shows a different event for that date at the Stick plus three other soccer matches (USMNT, Bay Area Breeze, Mexican League friendly): http://sponsorshipstrategies.com/last-summer-stick-promises-memorable/ Hoping for the Quakes. Bonus Game B?
For the good of the league & the team it should'nt happen, can you imagine? One of the top 5 best teams in the world right now, we are about to get owned by Chivas, never mind playing Madrird.
I am a Real Madrid supporter but I am glad that the other Madrid team, Atletico, keeps rising. It is a healthy thing. I can see some similarities between Atletico and the Quakes,, and we can certainly learn a few things from their brand of football Both team emphasize (or for the Quakes at least supposed to) tough defense, organized team work, high pressure pressing, playing physical and that never-say-die mentality. Both team also relies on a target man up top. These are the things Yallop and Watson want to do in their systems, but we cannot do well consistently or comprehensively. From Atletico, we need to learn that skills, soccer intelligence and movements do not need to be sacrificed to be a tough and organized team to beat. It doesn't mean you have to be static.
Whats productive about saying how much you think "we suck" ALL THE TIME, IN EVERY THREAD. You don't contribute to anything. Borderline trolling.
You did'nt answer the question. The statement you made was'nt relevent to the quotation you added but whatever. I don't say that in every thread just a few threads & i say it because it's true & it's my opinion, it does'nt have to be poductive, this is'nt a positive energy forum you know? deal with it
A big reason that system works is because of the men they have up top. I mean, could you imagine the damage the Quakes could do in MLS with David Villa and Diego Costa??? Man City have been almost as successful with a similar approach ... but they have Aguero and a capable if not spectacular second tier of forwards (Dzeko, Negredo).
Looks like it's finally announced...http://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/2014/04/quakes-host-atletico-madrid-july-27
Yes. The game is not Bonus Game B for STH, who will receive a pre-sale option with reduced ticket prices beginning on May 12th.
The game comes sandwiched in between two home games, five days after Yallop and co return, and four days before the "big game" against Seattle at 49ers new stadium. That's putting a lot of pressure on a team, through no fault of the players, that is not deep enough.
I guess being positive and challenging the trolls makea me "static". Great advise tho, i would much rather prefer the dumb dumbs not to respond to my posts.
Well hopefully this silences those usual suspects that complain we don't get good friendly opponents or that we don't directly play the ones we do get...
Whattt. =( I'm guessing they're saving the B game for USOC, but I'd rather submit my B ticket for this game.
Thanks for the tip, good idea. Hopefully we have improved by then a lot because it's just not going to show well for promotional reasons and sponsors and the fans if we get humiliated although it's always nice to play different teams especially ones as good as Madrid & if we get a result that would be memorable.
I have objected to these friendlies in the past not on the grounds of the opponent, although that was certainly a factor. Rather, I object on an MLS-centric basis. These are a major, major distraction from the competition - i.e. getting into the playoffs. I don't care about La Liga teams. I care about the Earthquakes. I am smart enough - barely - to recognize that these games are not about me or those similarly situated. They are about the Eurosnobs whom MLS needs to be profitable. That said, playing these games at a venue other than your brand new stadium and with a team that is anything less than your best 11, is counter productive. Short term cash grab versus a long term hit. The Eurosnobs have their biases confirmed: MLS teams don't have their own stadiums, and they aren't nearly as good as the competition. I am glad this is not my bonus game B.
This is all sorts of meh, but I guess they have decided to continue to market to the SF hipster eurosnob crowd. However, the Quakes getting smashed by a better European team seems counter-intuitive to that marketing strategy, no? EDIT: Just went back and read what Colin wrote, and it seems I did quite the summary of it, no?
So in other words the FO was and is ********ed. They don't hold one of these events and people would bitch we are the only MLS team not having one. We play a lesser opponent we might beat and people complain. We hold it as a double header and people complain. They man up and play the top level Euro team, and people find a reason to complain...
