Below is a pic of when George Best scored his most famous goal for the Quakes against his former club. It was against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in 1981. They played the Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium on a Wednesday evening July 22, 1981. The game started at 7:30 PM PST. His most famous goal came In the 56th minute of the match in front of 11,629 fans at Spartan Stadium. Best's masterpeiece came moments after a confusing sequence resulting in yellow cards to himself & GK Phil Parks, and a disputed goal by Bernd Holzenbein giving the Strikers a 2-0 lead at 55:15. Seemingly motivated by his run-in with refereee Ian Foote, Best took on five Ft. Lauderdale defenders. After taking a pass from Gary Etherington and David Irving on the right wing and a series of magical moves in the penalty box that left more than one Striker on the turf, the Quakes captian deposited the ball past goalie Jan van Beveren into the right corner of the net at 56:00. Incredible. At that point the game was 2-1. Toward the end of the match, with the Strikers winning, Best took a loose ball in the box as Tony Crescitelli was brought down in the box. Foote signaled for a pk but Best rushed to a loose ball and beat a horde of onrushing Strikers and scored. The game went into sudden death OT. At 2-2 in OT, Best shot the ball from point blank range where Van Beveren was lucky to parry it and Mustafa Hukic collected the loose ball for the game winner. What memories.
Today's Installment of name that former NASL Earthquake: This person now makes a living as a Treasure Hunter and is doing VERY well for himself! Good Luck!

Well this would belong under MLS Quakes history but not NASL Quakes history..... I must say it is frustrating however, not to know anything on the Quakes MLS front yet...
1978 NASL Rookie of the year Gary Etherington's son Ian Etherington, a recent Notre Dame grad tried out for a club in Great Brittain. The first club told him to get lost but then I read another club was talking positively about him giving him another shot.
How did he luck into this job? Isn't Chris Turner a millionaire now? I remember when he was 19 years old working out by himself at Del Mar High School and going over giving some pointers & trying to teach the girls how to play soccer during their P.E. class morning session. They didn't really care about his soccer skills though. They were only try to lay him!
School teacher, living in East Rockaway, NY doing very well! He could not get out of a commitment and was unable to make the 2004 NASL reunion.
One of the most fun things I ever did was sit on the team bench in Chicago in 1979. When we came out of the tunnel at Soldier Field, Chris Turner is directly in front of me. He placed a towel at one end of the bench and told me that was "his" spot, so I could not sit there. He then ran out on the pitch for the pre-game warm ups. He never did sit in that spot during the entire game. I have always thought that was funny.
Im a NASL soccer memorablia collector. Im the luckily owner of a GW San Jose Earthquakes 79 jersey. I still need some good San Jose or other NASL team group pics and I also wants more NASL games on video and dvd. Please feel free to contact me!
I was there. My family lives south of Tampa and I visited them. We all went to the game. I then caught a plane to Ft. Lauderdale where the Quakes played a few days later.
