I remember a SJSU GK named Paul Coffee who played for the Chicago Sting....I wonder if he was the same person of the same name who was an NHL hockey player?
So Elton John was Nicole Ritchie/Paris Hilton before either was even born? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
no, Paul Coffee is not Paul Coffey. but not only did Paul Coffee play for SJSU, he also graduated from the old Emil R. Buchser HS in Santa Clara and started for the Olympic team. he was nice enough to come back to the old high school and play in our annual match against the alumni in 79 after his rookie season with the Sting. he actually played forward in HS, but converted to GK at SJS.
I always wondered why the Quakes didn't draft him. It was probably for the best that he went to Chicago becuase I think he was a 2-3 year perennial starter and in those days Mike Hewitt had pretty much of a lock on the gk spot. If I'm not mistaken I seem to remember he came out for the Quakes again in 82 or 83 but didn't make the team. I always thought the NHL player was him...not sure why but I guess I figured becuase he was in the NHL he didn't want to play anymore. But it was the wrong guy. I wondered why he didn' play after the NASL folded becuase I didn't remember him playing either in the MISL, WSA or the ASL .
Was this when he was with the Sting on the NASL indoor or in the MISL indoor after the outdoor league folded?
It seems appropriate that the opposing player, on the ground and seemingly in pain, is laying in front of John Rowlands (14).
In the top photo, we also see #21, Miro Pavlovic (part of the "No Goal Patrol"), which would have been either '76 or '77. In the bottom shot, we see #6, Ian Wood in '79 or '80.
