Seattle Sounders vs.San Jose Earthquakes June 1981. I can't really tell but it looks like Bob Stetler in goal.
I was there. June 20th in the Kingdome (I am actually older than Goodsport!) The Sounders won 1-0 on a goal by Steve Daley (famous for commanding the first million dollar transfer fee in English soccer).
But you're probably younger at heart. ... Having a Seattle Sounders MLS team would be awesome! Heck, I'm surprised that Seattle still doesn't have an NHL team (both would seem like such naturals in Seattle). GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
From the Sounders record breaking 1980 season. #20 is the great Tommy Hutchison, ex-Scotland int. and Coventry City star, whose dazzling play on the left wing was a big part of the Sounders success that year. Hutch was 33 at the time, but, his play was so inspiring that Manchester City signed him the folowing year, where he went on to make FA Cup final history by being the first player to score for both sides in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham. (City lost the replay). Now, who is the Quakes #9? (Photo courtesy of Soundercentral.com, the best fan website in the world!)
Cool pic! Is that Bernie Gersdorff? I remember he played at the beginning of the 1980 season then was traded to San Diego for I believe it was Peter Lecherman. Please keep posting more Quakes NASL photos!
Steve David the star from Trinidad & Tobago. He played for a number of teams, Miami Toros(1974-76), LA Aztecs in 1977 & part of 78, the Detroit Express also in 78, the California Surf the rest of '78 and 1979, the San Diego Sockers part of 1980, and then came to the San Jose Earthquakes for the remainder of '80 and 1981. I think they wanted to partner him up with George Best and form the tandem they had with the Aztecs. He scored quite a few goals in 1980 then in 81 went on a drought. He scored two headers in 1 match I think against Tulsa in 81 at home then was later released becuase he wasn't scoring.
He was released two days after scoring his 100th NASL goal against Edmonton which was a joke. He went on to play for Phoenix in the MISL and at the same time he got a degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State. He later went on to work for Bechtel and was responsible for going back to Trinidad and educating his fellow countryman on becoming electricians helping to re-do the entire electical system on the island. This put the money into the locals pockets, rather than if they had to bring in experienced electricians. Steve David is an amazing person!
I still couldn't understand why they let him go back the as he was always a starter. Slavko Licinar didn't do much else in 81. He couldn't even hack it at Nowich. http://www.ex-canaries.co.uk/players/licinar.htm
Mustafa Hukic 81 against Strikers . The match when George scored his most famous goal. Hukic actually scored the winner in sudden death OT on a rebound of a George Best shot.
