Happy 69th birthday to Australia international John Coyne (pictured at left), the rugged forward who shone at Hartlepool United (1972-74), but spent 3 NASL season with the Boston Minutemen (1974), Dallas Tornado (1974), Toronto Metros-Croatia (1975) and Hartford Bicentennials (1976), rolling up 23 career goals in 66 games.

San Jose's John Rowlands (12) heads over New England's Steve Reid, 1979.

A common sight when Rowlands was playing for the Quakes. It was almost automatic that he would win anything in the air and if he didn't, the other guy likely paid some sort of price for it.

Interesting how so much has changed in the game since 1980. Most notably probably, the amount of defensive pass backs to the keeper. One thing that doesn't seem to be much different is the inconsistent officiating...or can I say the consistent inconsistency of it.
