NASL Memories: Ajax Amsterdam hosted a 1984 charity match at De Meer Stadium against Dutch stars who played in the NASL, fielding a line-up that included Leo van Veen, Wim Suurbier, Jan van der Veen, Peter Ressel, Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Rob Rensenbrink, Wim Risbergen, Gerrit Vooys and Dick Lawyer.

Happy 62nd birthday to U.S. international Gary Etherington, the London-born midfielder who burst from the suburban D.C. youth scene and signed with the New York Cosmos at 18, winning Soccer Bowls in 1977 and 1978 and earning the 1978 NASL Rookie of the Year Award, then later played with the Los Angeles Aztecs (1980), San Jose Earthquakes (1981-82) and Minnesota Strikers (1984), finished with 15 career goals in 154 games, and also spent 5 seasons in the MISL with the Minnesota Strikers (1984-88) -- making the 1987 MISL All Star team -- and winning the MISL Championship with the San Diego Sockers in 1988-89.

Soccer in the 1970s: Polish superstar Stan Terlecki openly opposed the Communist regime in his country and sided with the Solidarity labor movement, and organized a meeting for national team players with Pope John Paul II on a trip to Italy in 1980 that infuriated Polish federation officials. Terlecki's international career was terminated that year at the age of 25, and he jumped in 1981 to the MISL (Pittsburgh Spirit, St. Louis Storm) and NASL (Golden Bay Earthquakes, New York Cosmos)

Did You Know? Godfrey Ingram was a 20-year old forward struggling to crack the Luton Town line-up when he was loaned to the New York Cosmos in 1979. Ingram played in just one match - a 4-1 win over the Dallas Tornado on 9 June at Giants Stadium -- then returned to England for 3 seasons before rejoining to the NASL in 1982 and earning all-NASL honors, and later becoming the 13th all-time leading goal scorer in MISL history.

Interestingly, Ingram scored the last NASL Quakes goal in a 1-0 win over the NY Cosmos at Giants Stadium September 12, 1984 in front of only 10,000 fans...

John Rowlands (7 February 1947 – April 2020) who played defender for the old NASL San Jose Earthquakes forming the famed defense, the "No Goal Patrol" lost his life to the Coronairus. RIP John #14!

Did You Know? New York Cosmos goalkeeper Shep Messing's controversial 1974 nude magazine pictorial came about as a result of a phone call from "Ball Four" author Jim Bouton. The Yankee star-turned-controversial author-turned-sportscaster told Messing that Viva magazine was offering $1,000 to top athletes to pose nude. "I'd do it myself," Bouton said, "but my pitching arm's too ugly."

Sad to report that Dutch superstar Wim Suurbier, who played in the 1974 and 1978 FIFA World Cups, helped Ajax dominate European soccer in the 1970s, and played 5 seasons in the NASL with the Los Angeles Aztecs and San Jose / Golden Bay Earthquakes, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage recently and is in critical condition in The Netherlands.

Happy 66th birthday to John Smillie (number 20), the Scottish-American midfielder who won All-America honors at San Jose State University and was a1st-round pick of the Portland Timbers in the 1976 NASL Draft, then made 14 appearances in 3 NASL seasons with the Timbers (1976) and San Jose Earthquakes (1977-78), joined the Cincinnati Kids in 1978 for the inaugural MISL campaign and played with the expansion San Francisco Fog in 1979-80.

Did You Know? Steve Zungul was the only player to be named Most Valuable Player in both the NASL and MISL. Zungul won 6 MISL MVP Awards with the New York Arrows (1979-82) and San Diego Sockers (1985-86), and received the NASL MVP Award with the Golden Bay Earthquakes (1984).

Soccer in the 1970s: When the referee dropped his yellow card on the Spartan Stadium field during an NASL match in 1979, San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Bernd "Bernie" Gersdorff picked up the card and laughingly yellow-carded the referee instead.
