Geoff Davies was a key part of the 1977 Quakes team, little doubt about that. Last I knew (which was a few years ago), he was living in San Francisco. If I am not mistaken, he has attended some of the Quakes reunions over the years.

Happy 63rd birthday to Ismael "Easy" Perez (number 15), the Mexican-American forward who starred at San Jose State University and was picked by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 1979 NASL Draft, then spent the next 5 seasons playing outdoors (25 games) and indoors (28 games) for the 'Quakes.

Happy 70th birthday to U.S. international Julie Veee, the Hungarian-born striker who defected at the age of 18 while on tour in western Europe with the U-21 team, then became a naturalized American and enjoyed a long pro career, scoring 39 goals with the Los Angeles Aztecs (1975), San Jose Earthquakes (1976) and San Diego Sockers (1978-82) -- earning all-NASL honors in 1982 -- but reaching greater heights indoors, where he helped the New York Arrows to the 1980 MISL championship, added 8 more titles with the Sockers (2 in NASL Indoor and 6 in MISL), finished as the MISL's 23rd all-time leading scorer, made 3 MISL All Star teams, and was inducted into the inaugural class of the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011.

Soccer in the 1970s: When the NASL expanded to the West Coast in 1974, club owners were surprised when the San Jose Earthquakes was unveiled. General manager Dick Berg said he got a call from owner Milan Mandaric who said, 'Dick, you got me in a lot of trouble with that name, the San Jose Earthquakes. The owners don't like it. We have to change it."

Berg told Mandaric that he expected the complaint. "But it grabs you," he said. "And if we win, they won't care if we're called Earthquakes or whatever."

"They don't mind the 'Earthquakes' part," Mandaric said sadly. "They don't like 'San Jose'."

Happy 58th birthday to Tim Schulz, the American midfielder who jumped from high school direct to the NASL in 1980, joining the Minnesota Kicks for the 1980-81 NASL Indoor season, then playing for the San Jose / Golden Bay Earthquakes (1981-84), and enjoying MISL success with the Denver Avalanche (1982-83) and St. Louis Steamers (1984-85, 1986-88) before becoming a successful coach for the U.S. men's and women's youth teams.

RIP Ibraim Silva!

Sad to report that Ibraim Silva, the Portuguese forward who spent most of his 5-year NASL career as a key member of the Rochester Lancers, died this week in Portugal after a brief illness. Silva was 65. His heroics during the 1977 NASL playoffs have become part of Lancers' lore, and he finished his career with 16 goals in 108 games. Ibraim Silva, who scored one of the most important and dramatic goals in Rochester Lancers history, passed away on Saturday. He was 65. Silva passed away at his home in Vila Praia de Âncora, Portugal after a sudden illness.

Happy 69th birthday to Trinidad and Tobago international Steve David, the lanky striker who joined the NASL in 1974 and promptly led the Miami Toros to the NASL final, then scored 37 goals over 3 seasons and captured the 1975 NASL MVP Award, was traded to the Los Angeles Aztecs in 1977 and responded with 26 goals in 24 games to finish as the league's top scorer, later played for the Detroit Express (1978), California Surf (1978-79) and San Jose Earthquakes (1980-81), earned 3 all-NASL selections, finished as the NASL's 7th all-time leading goal scorer, and ultimately added 3 standout seasons in MISL with the Phoenix Inferno and Phoenix Pride, notching 144 goals and making the MISL All Star team in 1982 and 1983.

Two Seattle soccer legends. Best, who died in 2014, was the NASL Sounders first head coach, and then became the team's general manager. He led the team during the Sounders "Camelot" years in the mid-70's, when the Sounders became the darling of the Seattle sports scene and had a presence in the community not unlike what the Earthquakes were experiencing in the south bay at the same time.
