Today on 106.5 I heard a commercial for the Quakes. It had a gospel choir singing "Believe" and then they told about the Canada game. When and where have you seen advertising for the Quakes? Post them here.
During Quakes away games, because, you know, I wasn't watching the game or anything... Like I said before, I know they're an awesome team, but as a kindred soul responded to an earlier post of mine (I believe it was in Tighe's thread), they're preaching to the choir. Tell someone who doesn't know how incredible they are.
yeah..I've only seen that commercial during the broadcast of away games. Why would you advertise to people that you already have? Shouldn't those ads be running on other channels?
Every team in any sport advertises during their TV games. There are people who watch on TV that don't go to games.
Hey, I dunno the schedule by heart either. I've got nothing against letting casual fans know when games are, either. I just don't think we really need the full fledged ad, and definitely not more than once. Also, if I recall correctly, the commentators usually mention, at least once, the time and opponent for the next game. But this definitely doesn't meant they shouldn't show the adverts during other sport events/shows/etc
The Monday, July 19th SF Examiner had a half-page black and white ad for the upcoming game vs. the Revs. Today's paper also had one paragraph on Chingy getting POW honors in the sports briefs column.
I don't know if it's so much as Quakes advertising, but I've seen Donovan on the boob tube almost everyday this past week. First he was on the History channel for the soccer series then he was on a Nickelodeon commercial called Verb. He was even wearing a SJ kit
Wouldn't this be a good measure of how serious Uncle Phil and Co. are about keeping the franchise here? If they're not advertising in a newspaper that they own, that would be a bad sign. Have there been other ads in the Examiner?
There is a black and white ad about the upcoming Revs game (with DeRo's picture) in the freebie newspaper "The Independent" we get in San Mateo. I believe it reaches houses all over the Peninsula (South San Francisco, San Carlos, Redwood City, etc.). This newspaper is now owned by AEG. They bought it recently from the Fang family along with the purchase of the Examiner.
The best and probably most effective add is the "DeRo Gospel - We Believe' I've see. What has impressed me is that the Quakes have shelled out to put it on during Giants games. I think advertising sports activities to sports people is better then picking random times to show the adds. Also, another Donovan add is on the Jettex Kids Cup (ABC & ABC Family if I remember correctly) as he and Freddy Adu are hosting it together. Yes, I still watch Sturday morning cartoons, but mostly just Spiderman now.
The shows are still on the new History Channel International this week at 5 PM and 9 PM PST (it's channel 276 on Comcast digital cable). Last week, all the Comcast subscribers got it free because it was the designated preview channel. Monday's was about the history of Uruguayan futbol, not sure what last night's was (I taped it but haven't watched). My frustration about these Hitlery Channel International shows is that, while Landon's the "host" in some pretaped segments inserted into the broadcasts: 1. Landon's vignettes were filmed in Spartan Stadium, but he NEVER mentions the San Jose Earthquakes (or where he is, for that matter), although he does identify himself as being from the "US National Team". 2. Each episode has many of the same Landon interludes, so if you're only watching these shows to see Landon, you'll get bored after a couple nights. The shows are pretty interesting, though. Last week's installments about great rivalries were really cool. But I wouldn't count these shows as any kind of "promotion" or "advertisement" for the Quakes, because they're never mentioned.
I was quite taken aback today to suddenly find a pack of pocket Quakes schedules sitting in front of the cash register at my favorite local taquería here in the Bernal Heights neighborhood. I think this may be the first time I've ever come across anything Q related here in SF outside of the Kezar Pub. I find myself wondering if this is the Galexi influence. He seems to have an affinity for SF (anybody ever establish if he actually lives up here?), given his trips to Kezar.
I don't go there often, but the Benihana in Cupertino has a wall of photos, many including Quakes/Clash players, and they always seem to have some promotion you can enter for free match tickets. They also had a big flyer up for the Asian-American night last season. The Quizno's on El Camino Real in Mountain View near Hwy. 85 had Quakes and A's schedules last time I was there, too.
Saw the Mighty, Mighty, Me ad not once, but twice last night. Once was during the US vs Ozzy women's match (yea! target marketing!). Although, I still cringe that ya'll thought I should've tried out for the preacher part. No Jheri Curl for mighty, mighty, me.
I just saw one of those ads for Verb (Campaign for kids to get active and play sports). They did one with Serena and now they did one with Landon. He's playing a small sided game with a couple of kids. Interesting ad.
Has the "Mighty, Mighty, Me" man been out to any of the games, yet? After that CM was finished, he said he would, some time (I don't know when), but I told him he had to wear that jacket. It's probably not even his, though.
actually, not a lot, but some... 1) on the radio stations for the MIAMI FUSION vs. SAN JOSE QUAKES in the 2nd match of the 2001 MLS PLAYOFF semifinals which we won and tied the series and beat miami in the 3rd game and eventually beat LA GAYLAXY in the finals in a season that turned SJ from worst to first.(2001) (im sorry, that really got me excited, so i had to post the whole thing. lol?) 2) an advertisement in downtown san jose LRT station. it had lando and the date to the next home game(2001) 3) the commercial when lando and dunivant header the ball to the wall in the hotel thingy... (2002)? or (2003) 4) the preacher thingy commercial (2004) 5) the preacher thingy on the radio (2004) and if u want these... 6) landon donovan with an earthquakes jersey at E3(2004) 7) landon donovan with an earthquakes jersey in a NINTENDO POWER(magazine) (2004) 8) landon donovan playing soccer with a bunch of kids in one of those "verb" commercials in nickelodeon (2004) well, i counted 8, but i bet i've seen/heard more. well, that is quite a few, but they are REALLY easy to miss. oh yeah... 9) i think for about 1/2 a sec i saw landos face in a nike commercial... does that count?
Wow. Out of the blue, in one of the newsletters at my workplace in San Mateo: COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER Stay tuned for more information on our upcoming programs: * discount tickets to the San Jose Earthquakes for the September 25th game against the LA Galaxy I've never seen anything like this at my various peninsula employment locations since the league's inception in 1996. Somebody, somewhere is taking the effort to spread the message behind the scenes. It seems Lalas (or AEG, or someone in the front office, not sure who??) get(s) less credit on these boards than he (or they) deserve(s).
Okay...so the ad in the Merc for the DC game in todays paper made me laugh pretty hard. That was probably one of the funniest ads I've ever seen for the Quakes. I don't know why...maybe I'm just in an odd mood this morning. "Bring your kids. DC's bringing theirs."
Is that referring to Frederick? It's nice to see the ad on page 2 of the Sports section (as opposed to page 10 or wherever) and that Landon's also in the ad. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Just noticed that the bring your kids ad was in the Monday, Aug 2 SF Examiner. That's twice now that there have been 1/2 page b/w ads in the Ex. (and presumably in the SM/SF Independents as well) That's unheard of. (But I'm sure that someone will come up with a creative reason to blame Alexi for not doing anything .)
You must work where I work, because I just checked the email from last week and it is worded the same way -- either that, or the Quakes have gotten really aggressive in targeting companies in San Mateo!
