just found out on Radio Unica (first to report on Fish to L.A) that Earnie wants to play in the MLS with the Galaxy but that the League wants to send him to Dallas or DC U..
No Earnie We wont be Getting Earnie Stewart. D.C. boards are all but assured they are getting him. The league seems to want to let the Dallas franchise sink, along with Colorado and Kansas City.. they should be allocated the next big signings. As Dallas should get E. Stewart and KC should get Joe Max.
Re: No Earnie Just out of curiosity, but why exactly, "should" Dallas, KC or Colorado get the next big signings? Did they miss the playoffs? Did they have a number of players retire? Anyone been sold from their roster lately? Colorado got the league makeover treatment last season, and still didn't do much better than their usual mediocrity. Dallas has been playing well for 3 seasons now, and will have to deal with the fact that they are not bad enough to be in line for a free top notch player (Ala SJ in the Donovan deal 2 years ago). KC is in the same boat. They just got 2 new strikers last season, and they didn't do all that bad. I'm just curious as to why you feel that those 3 teams are more deserving than others.
TequilaJoal I heard DC U was after the Honduran Milton "Tyson" Nunes who was released from Pachuca, IMO he can be better than Ruiz although he is older (31). Anyways what would happen if Earnie demanded he play in L.A ???
Re: TequilaJoal J, DC has been saying now that Tyson is not an option. Smokescreen by Hudson? Perhaps, but until the wizard comes out from behind the screen I have to say DC will not get that Honduran US-killer.
earnie s. Well if Earnie demanded to play in L.A. the league would look into it. But the fact that its Earnie Stewart means they wont force a few allocations and trades to see him in L.A. Why MLS is still in the dark ages... If we get earnie we have to get rid of one of our top players and give it to Dallas, probably cobi or Califf. And it hurts to say the legbreaker is one of our top players. If Earnie wants to play here he has to accept the allocation... if not, oh well... this isn't 1996 and MLS isnt that desperate to sign all to frequent aging euro professional americans. As for D.C. United and their limitless Salary Cap, The top attendance market can make its own rules. How long can the league last with 3 owners & how ethical are there Management moves?
Re: earnie s. There is NO WAY the League would move Jones for Stewart. Jones has far more power and would want to stay put. Califf, Victorine or Vagenas would all be possibilities.
Re: Re: earnie s. As much as I would love to have Stewart on our team, I wouldn't give up any of our proven young guys for him. Albright, Ochoa and our first round pick for Stewart.
No The reason you take cobi, is it is an even swap in US internationals. Both on the WC team... in fact earnie got more playing time. Califf is on the squad now, with his recent call up, but he'll be back in L.A. real soon after he takes down a few canadians and argentinians in the box. The Bruce will have had enough of him til next year. But if Earnie Stewart signs a deal, he is almost certainly going to Dallas.
No way in hell we get Stewart. Remember back when Donovan said he'd like to play for the Galaxy if he came to the MLS? Could you imagine though, the uproar in the MLS community, if we picked up Stewart? With Bo and Ernie, I can already see the rest of the MLS pukes [fans] cry foul.
Re: earnie s. "DC and their limitless salary cap?" -- are you really that ignorant or is it from all the Tequila? Need I mention Luis Hernandez to you? Where have you been the last four or five years when, Pope, Moreno, Agoos, Llamosa, Williams, Harkes were all forced to leave because of the salaray cap? Expect nothing less than ignorance from a Galaxy fan....
Re: Re: earnie s. More popular fiction from DC supporters. 1. Pope and Moreno are not leaving because of salary cap. They are leaving because Hudson wants a different team. 2. It was Rongen that screwed you guys not the League. 3. L.A. lost Roy Meyers to cap issues the year Hernandez "graced" us. You might have heard we also lost Mathis and Franchino just for the pleasure of having him. The following year we lost Fraser (he was our captain and a past defender of the year) to salary cap. We avoided it last year because of the exit of Hernandez and Vanney. The above history lesson is free of charge as part of a service aimed at educating ignorant DC United fans.
DC101 Dickless.Cheeseballs.United If they suck this year.. with what the league and there previous 3 years of sucking has done, then they should be contracted. All the interesting little moves DC has gotten away with this offseason, not to mention they have the first pick in the SuperDraft, also 3 more in the next 13 picks after that... and now the bitChez cry and whine we want Earnie Stewart too. And if that wasnt enough... one of there main rivals Chicago has been gutted like a fish for them. So D.C wont have it so hard this year, so the babies can make the playoffs. I respect Dallas.. when they win they cheat, when they lose they bitch about the Galaxy. But through all that they have the second best win-loss record in MLS History and i cant name but 2 prominent memebers of that franchise, they win with over-achieving no name talent. Not like D.C who lose with under-achieving, over-hyped and over-paid players. Hmmm i wonder if Bruce Smith can play left back ?
I'd keep Cobi a hundred times out of a hundred over Earnie Stewart. Don't get me wrong - I love Earnie and what he's done for the Nats, but few pros bring to the game what Cobi does - guts, grit, determination and the ability to play week in and week out. Cobi just doesn't have the same injury weaknesses as some of our other older Nats. He's quick and steady and I wouldn't trade him for Stewart - even if we had the chance (which we won't).
Re: Re: No Earnie Sorry to intrude on your boards, but I have to comment on this. So the #1 pick in the draft isn't good enough for you? You had a national team player and several future, but you coach has decided that he wants to change his team up. Last time I checked, I had never heard anything about DC wanting Stewart UNTIL the last 2 weeks ago or so. In reality this whole thing of allications is pointless. He is a free agent and by free agent I mean he has the green light from his Holland club to go wherever he wants. MLS needs to stay out of making the choice where players play and let them decide.
1. Earnie Stewart didn't ask to go to LA. This allocation is a bit hinky. Earnie is being some degree of control in where he goes. Before signing with the league, from the git-go, he said DC or Dallas. No conspiracy there. No league against LA nonsense. He didn't choose LA. 2. Cap considerations would be a big factor. Adding Hong ain't cheap (even though his contract didn't kick in until 2003). Earnie would make the max. 3. ArsenalTexan3--Jacen is a moderator with that team that is located in the NY City area of the country. He's not a United fan. 4. As for DC's "magic cap", United cut a bunch of players (or didn't re-sign them), then cleared over $600K in cap space by dealing Moreno, Pope and Richie Williams. That is why they're in the position to acquire a big salaried player.
Fair enough, but his whole attitude seemed like getting an early draft pick isn't good enough for a team that has talent(at least on paper and in theory).
AT3--I think Jacen's post can be summarized as this: 1. MLS policy is that if you don't make the playoffs you get an allocation. If you sell a player that brings money to MLS you get an allocation. 2. And, if you don't trade your picks away, then you get first pick if you finish last. So why should you begrudge United an allocation and the first pick? And, the second allocation, United traded for. If Dallas wants to acquire an allocation, they can trade for one (just like United did for its second allocation). Likewise, why is Dallas or any other team owed an allocation if they (a) didn't make the playoffs or (b) didn't sell a player? LA got Hong (definitely an allocation-level player). But they got him b/c they sold Vanney. Irrelevant of past records, that they won the championship or their needs. The sold a player under contract, the league got bucks b/c of Vanney's sale to Bastia, so they get an allocation that turns into Hong. If Dallas wants Stewart, they can trade Vaca to the SoS to get an allocation. That's how it works. Or, they can sell a player or more and then they'll get allocations. You may not like the idea of "you suck" allocations (for not making the playoffs). But they've been league policy for the past couple of years. And they make more sense then giving a team an allocation for an allocated player (Lubos Kubik) who retires even though it wasn't with the team he was originally allocated to. Again--not complaining about that, only pointing out that YSA's are league policy and have been so for some time. One last point--let's suppose that the league didn't give out YSA's. You (Dallas) still wouldn't be any better off. In the past, the league did a lottery to assign players (with your record weighting your chances). This year, it will be a draft in reverse order. Again, both approaches make basic sense. It sounds like you're just frustrated b/c you'd really like to see Stewart in Dallas and you're upset that a team that finished worse than Dallas might get him first.
DC can have the 1st pick as far as I am concerned. However you did summerize it fairly acurate(sp, its early). I hate the "you suck" allocations. As far as Stewart going to DC, it is not he is goig to DC that is annoying, but the fact he is a free agent(again because his Holland club said he could go where ever he wanted on a free transfer). Then again the whole thing with the allocations for national team players is a bit nuts too. All in all the whole allocation system is screwed up. That is what is really bugging me.
