I don't know. There were some dreary days when I thought "this isn't going to happen and AEG is going to move our team from Houston." I have to tell you, it was very depressing. :(

In honor of your post I was trying to find a picture of the 1836 announcement that said "It's About Time." But I can't find one....

Oh, yea, I guess I should have pulled out my shirt. Thanks.

Wasn't it on a banner at the school when they announced the name? I know there were pictures, probably here, but I couldn't find any. No problem, though, that picture works. Was it at the pick-a-seat day? I was there then, and took my picture with Dom too, but I lost all those pictures off my computer a couple of years ago.

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

Channel 2 just ran the story again with the same incorrect information about the hotel and rental tax. Why don't they fix errors like that? Also, after the report, the anchor came on and said something like how TSU could maybe play some of their home games at the stadium too. Idiots. Why can't they get their facts right before broadcasting them to the world???

Dude, Channel 2 has cared more about casting hot anchors than reporting accurate news for the past 8-10 years at the very least.

....and reporters with bizarre names. They keep getting weirder. The latest, Nefertiti Jáquez. And she doesn't even know how to pronounce Jáquez, though she carefully puts an accent mark over it.

Sadly my last big sign will (hopefully) never get used at a rally... thanks to the rain last week.

So here goes, it would have knocked everybody's calcetines off. It's the first one that didn't have any big mistakes in it.......

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

That's a fairly fallacious statement. What does channel 2's negligence to detail and garbage reporting have to do with the Sports Authority's involvement?

They were confused by the Sports Authority involvement, and many others will be as well thinking that if they are involved, it must mean they are funding it as well.

Maybe I've missed it somewhere, but what is TSU actually bringing to this whole thing? Are they actually participating in the funding of the stadium, or are they just going to be a tenant?

Does this mean another 20 years of football lines on the field for half the season?

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

I believe they gave some money to the stadium; however their involement was crucial. The county commisoners court stated they would not involves themselves with the constuction of the stadium unless it was assured that TSU could play its home games at the New Dynamo Stadium. If we remember almost every plan i have heard in building the new stadium would involve American football playing at the stadium eithere being at the college level or high school level. I dont think that we are going to see to many white lines . Unlike at the Rob the Dynamo will have control of the stadium and field. I am so excited. The first Dynamo game I went to is the same game that I met my Fiancee! Cant wait to make more memories in the new stadium!

    Specific answers:

    1. TSU will be a tenant. They are paying some rent. As H_Town says bringing them into the stadium seems to have been integral to getting participation from some parties.

    2. I would say no. There may be some lines on the field in September, October, and November but they should be much less noticeable than at Robertson.

Pizza Hut Park has football games and it winds up looking like this:

And those lines are much less obvious in person as opposed to on TV. Much, much better than Robertson.

And I don't think they'll have huge "TSU" letters across the end zone, in the penalty area.

The race card. Predominantly black school, El Franco's alma mater. Political support. Small dollars. Getting more than they are putting in for non-existent football program.

Actually, this (the bold part) is a commonly held, and reported fact, that is not true. No one at the county brought up TSU. The Dynamo approached TSU, worked a deal, and hoped it would help with the County.

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

maybe i am confused. but the dynamo are putting up 75% of the money for the stadium (80M doesn't sound like a lot btw. are we looking at another cheapo SJ "epicenter" type soccer specific bleachers?) then why is it going to be "owned" by the city and county? And the team is going to have to pay rent/lease? isn't the point of having a SSS is to own it and thus control the revenues from both Dynamo games and all other uses while not paying rent? i might be missing something i guess as i am only following it peripherally.

and really. pointyball? there aren't enough places to play pointyball in TX? somehow i doubt that in the land of thousands attending HS pointyball.

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

Although the Dynamo are paying for and building the stadium, the land will be owned jointly by the City and County. The Dynamo will deed the building to the City and County (Sports Authority) and then lease it at a very favorable rate for a set number of years (I've heard $1 per year). At the termination of the lease - the property becomes City/County property totally.

This allows the Dynamo to avoid having to pay property taxes on the building because it will be owned by a government entity.

The deal with Texas Southern University is more of a political measure. The past history of building sports facilities in Houston has resulted in massive bond issues all backed by public debt. This deal is not the same, and the inclusion of allowing a Houston area college that has no facility of its own to play in, can only promote good will.

ok. the $1 lease thing for no taxes makes sense. but who controls the revenues i guess is my question? it would be pretty important for the Dynamo to control the revenue from all events not just games.

as for the football i guess, i just doubt how much "good will" you can generate amongst pointyball fans for a sport most probably think is some sort of communist/socialist plot. but as long as the dynamo are boos and there are no lines on the pitch and they don't tear up the turf. i just cannot believe that there aren't hundreds of other options for a small time football program in terms of stadiums. is this like a Portland Timbers thing where the proposed football team that will share PGE Park with them is unlikely to even survive as a programme that long?

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

I believe the Dynamo/AEG will control most of the revenues from the games - they have to considering they are putting up 75% of the funds. Many terms will be thrown around with Sports Authority management, etc., but the Dynamo will have the main lease on the stadium and with that lease will control the revenues (similar to the way that the other main leasees control Minute Maid, Reliant, the old Summit, etc.).

The TSU football thing is all to get black political support for the project. Nothing more than that. County Commissioner El Franco Lee went there and by bringing them in and giving them a sweetheart deal, you diffuse the whole racial issue. A few influential black state representatives went there and so that helps.

For the most part, TSU needs more help than a football field (considering they don't draw anyone to their games). I think they almost lost their accredation or their law school almost did, but throw some token dollars at sports and make everyone happy.

Re: Dynamo Stadium - Done Deal?

Dont forget that Sylvia Garcia got her law degree at TSU. So the Dynamo weren't exactly courting black support. They were courting the 2 ultra powerful politicians who will decide if the stadium lives or dies. They both graduated from TSU and happen to be black and hispanic. It's smart business by the Dynamo.
