Dutch UEFA Coefficients

  1. 21027

The Netherlands posted lousy results in Europe this midweek, but the pursuers on the coefficient list did not benefit. It was the week in which the sub-toppers had to deal with an exodus, including the Eredivisie.
The Eredivisie saw Feyenoord, PSV, Ajax and AZ drop out in a dark week. Portugal lost Benfica and Vitória Guimarães and Belgium will have to do without Club Brugge and Cercle Brugge from April. The Czech Republic, Turkey and Greece, the number nine, ten and eleven on the coefficient list, are also out after Thursday. The Netherlands added only 0.17 points to its total this midweek, while the exodus in the sub-top could have done extremely good business with a view to future cycles.
For example, there will be a status quo in the sub-top in the coming months. The Netherlands secured sixth place again on Tuesday because of the elimination of Benfica in the Champions League, which means that at least two Dutch teams will also make their appearance in the elite tournament in the 2026/27 season.
In other words, we can already look at the 2021-26 cycle, for the ticket distribution in 2027/28. The Netherlands is also sixth on that list, with no less than five points more than Portugal. After that, 'we' are going to lose the super strong year 2021/22, with the result that the Eredivisie is only eighth in the 2022-27 period. These are worries for tomorrow: the Netherlands still has two years in that cycle to catch up with Belgium and Portugal.

Coefficient wealth: The Netherlands puts more distance between both Portugal and Belgium.
The Netherlands has again done good business in the coefficient rankings. The victories of AZ and FC Utrecht meant that Thursday was a productive day. They distanced themselves from close rivals Portugal and Belgium.
It didn't seem to be much of a party at first, when Ro-Zangelo Daal received a red card after just six minutes and a bit on a visit to FC Vaduz. In the end, however, the Alkmaar team remained upright and Troy Parrott took care of the coefficient liberation with a spot-on penalty kick in extremis: 0-1. That gave the Netherlands 0.167 points. FC Utrecht also did a great job. Victor Jensen scored two goals, which proved to be enough for a victory over Servette (2-1). Coach Ron Jans' team also added 0.167 points to the total.

In the meantime, Belgium failed to do so.
Anderlecht visited FC Sheriff, who were wiped out by FC Utrecht in the preliminary round of the Europa League, and didnot get any further than a draw (1-1). And so the southern neighbors 'only' gained 0.100 points.
Portugal managed a better job, but also made mistakes. And Santa Clara was to blame. At home against the puny Larne FC, it remained the same (0-0). And so 0.100 points came to Portugal. Sporting Braga did the sporting duty and defeated CFR Cluj (2-0). The total of Thursday evening therefore went to 0.300 points.

The ranking after Thursday 14 August
    6. Netherlands 61,283
    7. Portugal: 55,466
    8. Belgium: 53,050

Coefficients: Dutch top night, Belgian and Portuguese misstep threatens
Thursday evening was another fruitful evening for the Dutch coefficients in Europe. FC Utrecht and AZ made sure of that with their victories over Zrinsjki Mostar and Levski Sofia respectively. Something interesting has happened in both Portugal and Belgium.
    0-2.
It was the golden score result of Thursday evening for the Dutch clubs.
AZ settled in the roaring Bulgaria through goals from Ibrahim Sadiq and Troy Parrott with Levski Sofia.
In the swampy Mostar, it was Utrecht that won with the same result through goals from David Min and Viktor Jensen.
It gives the Netherlands twice 0.167 points, which together makes a plus total of 0.334.
In terms of competition, we in the Netherlands have to look mainly at France, Portugal and Belgium.

On behalf of the French, who have seven clubs in Europe, Strasbourg came into action. The club, which is owned by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, drew against Brøndby IF (0-0) and that means plus 0.071 points for the French, who are active in the preliminary round of the Conference League and are therefore not yet assured of participation in a European group stage.

The interesting thing about the evening is in Portugal and Belgium.
The Portuguese have five teams active in Europe, where Sporting Braga won in the play-offs for the Europa League against Lincoln Red Limps.
But Santa Clara, who played the play-offs for the Conference League, lost to Shamrock Rovers.
That means 'only' an extra number of 0.200 points.

On behalf of Belgium, which had five clubs in Europe but still has four, two teams also came into action.
Genk won very convincingly with 1-5 against Lech Poznan, but Anderlecht played a draw at home against AEK Athens. In Greece, the Purple & Whites now have to pull out all the stops to reach the group stage of the Conference League.
Our southern neighbors will therefore gain 0.300 points.

If both Santa Clara and Anderlecht are eliminated in a week, then that is good news for the Netherlands. Portugal will then go into Europe with four teams and Belgium only with three, because Charleroi has already cleared the field.

    The ranking after tonight
    5. France: 67,819 (+0.071)
    6. NETHERLANDS: 61,617 (+0.334)
    7. Portugal: 55,759 (+0.200)
    8. Belgium: 53,550 (+0,300)

Well, the first head on confrontation with a coefficient spot 6 competitor went very bad.

We have a bunch of head to head matches and we better improve.

Based on what we’ve seen thus far - the sixth spot is a goner.

Belgians emphasize difference after 'dramatic European week' of the Netherlands

The coefficient knives are sharpened in Belgium, now that the first matchdays of the Champions League have been completed. For the Belgians, the elite tournament could not have started better, although there is still realism for the current season.

In a mutual duel, Union Saint-Gilloise dealt a blow to the Netherlands by beating PSV in the Philips Stadium, after which a day later Ajax could not make a contribution against Internazionale. Club Brugge then recorded a convincing victory over AS Monaco on Thursday.

Two matches, two wins, 0.800 coefficient points. That is the conclusion for Belgium after the first Champions League week.

'Belgium is doing an excellent job in the UEFA coefficient ranking', writes Het Laatste Nieuws. 'This way we are catching up with the Netherlands and Portugal. And that is particularly good news in the battle for two direct tickets to the Champions League.'
Number eight Belgium is aiming for the sixth place that the Netherlands currently holds. The country wants the luxury that national champion PSV and runner-up Ajax had this summer: certainty of at least two places in the competition phase of the Champions League. 'For the Netherlands, it was a dramatic European week, because both PSV and Ajax lost the first match. So our northern neighbours don't pick up any points this week.'

For this season, there is realism among the Belgians.
'Belgium remains eighth, but is approaching 2,116 points from Portugal. Overtaking them this year seems an impossible task - especially since they still have four clubs in action in Europe - but next year they will see a lot of points dropped. Just like the Netherlands, by the way.' That next season, with a new coefficient cycle, will be crucial in the battle for the extra Champions League spot.
Belgium is firmly in sixth place on next season's virtual list. 'With a considerable lead over the two rivals. If Belgium can hold on to that bonus this campaign, it is in pole position to get two direct Champions League tickets for the 2027/28 season - like Ajax and PSV this season
    .'

The Netherlands once again took a solid coefficient hit on Wednesday instead of handing it out.
Feyenoord lost to Sporting Braga, with which the Netherlands lost a mutual confrontation with a major competitor for the second time. There are still four chances left to deal a direct blow to Belgium or Portugal.

This fokking loss was completely unnecesary and only caused by insane line up choices made by van Persie.
Someone really needs to tell him that losing coefficiency points can be detrimental for Feyenoord itself, because it can/will cost us the guaranteed 2 direct and 1 qualifyer CL spots.
Also detrimental in the sense that losing matches like these against a very weak opponent costs you club coefficient points too and has impact on your seeding in the UEFA competitions.

  12. Because Feyenoord went down, the Netherlands could not add any points, while Portugal has gained 0.400. Furthermore, no Belgian, Portuguese or Dutch clubs came into action.

    This is totally unsurprising.

We're screwed, might as well surrender the spot 6.
We got teams in the CL that, quoting Voetbal International, are defending in the Eredivisie round 7 like relegation candidates.
In the Europa League we dot teams, that don't score the chances given by the opponent, where one team, Feyenoord, subs in the line up 7 new players who havenot played together before. Something you shouldnot and for sure van Persie wouldnot do against a bottom Eredivisie club, but thinks it's a good idea in a European confrontation.
And then we have in the Conference League AZ, that is performing very erratic in the Eredivisie, which makes me wonder what the coach is doing.

    Oww...
    Election time at Benfica.

Andries Jonker has been presented in Lisbon as a possible new director of football of Benfica. He climbed the stage with candidate chairman Martim Mayer, who wants to appoint the former national coach of the Orange Lionesses if he wins the elections. Louis van Gaal was also present. Sports editors 9 October 2025, 10:58Last update: 10 October 2025, 12:24

The election for the presidency at the club of the newly appointed coach José Mourinho is on October 25. In addition to Mayer, there are five other candidates: João Diogo Manteigas, João Noronha Lopes, Cristóvão Carvalho, Rui Costa and Luís Filipe Vieira.

In the CL Portugal's Benfica faces Newcastle United away and Sporting Ol. Marseille at home.
If we're lucky this could be a loss and a draw round only for Portugal. I really hope Paxaio is going to do us a four by killing Sporting and leaving Portugal in the CL with "zero points".
Unfortunately in the EL, Sporting Braga and Porto are doing well and in this round don't face troublesome opponents in the EL.
So here we have to do it ourselves, which is a hard call for Go Ahead Eagles with their best striker out for a long time, while facing a strong epl-team.
AZ faces Slovan Bratislava, which should be doable for AZ.
