Sorry if this comes off as a dumb question, but does anyone know the origin of the "magic hat" in the "X is f-n magic, he wears a magic hat" song?

I think it's just because it rhymes with the word "that", which is the last word in the next line of the song

This song started in th 93/94 season when we won the Cup winners cup.The Gooner fanzine ran a cover with George Graham wearing a "magic hat" ie he had to be a magician to get that squad of players to win a trophy so I guess the song has stuck over the yrs.

    Re: What's the melody?

    Once again with feeling...

The tune is "Can't Take My Eyes off You." We think of it as a Frankie Valli (minus the Four Seasons) song. The English fans say it's an Andy Williams tune, because he had a hit with it over there.

You can listen to Frankie's version here (among other places, I'm sure):

The tune for the "Magic Hat" song comes from the early 60's and was called "My old man's a dustman", (garbarge/refuse collector) sung by a guy named Lonnie Donnigan, who was a reasonably well known name in the late 50's and early 60's.

The Freddie Ljungberg song - to the (ahem!) Andy Williams song, is:

    "We love you Freddie
    Because you've got red hair

    We Love love you Freddie
    Cos you're everywhere

    We love you Freddie
Cos you're Arsenal through and through."

It's my theory that Freddie has stopped dyeing his hair red because, as a bit of a punk, he wants the fans to sing something more 'rebellious'.

    Perhaps something by the Clash?

    "Freddie Can't Fail?"

When I went to the "Arsenal Supporters Christmas Dinner & Dance" last year at which the players attended; most of them were wearing suits, or smartly casually dressed.
Freddie was wearing a "Sex Pistols" tee shirt, his knitted muliti-coloured Swedish wooly hat, and a pair of jeans.
I think a "punk flavoured" anthym would go down very well with him!!!

I'll "kick off" a "punk anthym" for Freddie. I hope that someone can better it!! How about "HEROES" from "The Stranglers".

"What ever happened to.... "Freddie's red hair"?,
He had it cut off.. in a barber's chair!

    "No more red hair anymore!"
    "No more red hair anymore!"

Com'on! Someone better it! "PLEEEEEASE". JEFF.

The words to the Freddie Ljungberg song are:

    We love you Freddie
    Cos you've got red hair

    We love you Freddie
    Cos you're everywhere

    We love you Freddie
Cos you're Arsenal through and through

Incidently, it's my theory that Freddie has stopped dyeing his hair red because he doesn't like this song very much. Being a bit of a punk, I think he would much rather we sang a Clash or Sex Pistols song in his honour.

    N4 again
Freddie needs a new chant, but Sylv and Bob are also in dire need of better songs.

"Super Sylv/Bob" can only be a stopgap. Maybe they need to do something particularly daft/heroic to get a decent song?
