The Duke team that opened the season 11-0 decided to show up tonight, thoroughly controlling the game and defeating Coastal Carolina 3-0. Duke came out with a new lineup tonight, starting freshman Tomek Charowski up top in place of senior Nigi Adogwa. I was a bit surprised as essentially all of Tomek's minutes this season have come at the midfield position. I didn't think that Charowski had enough speed to play striker, but apparently Rennie knew what he was doing as Tomek ended the night with two goals. Duke came out very aggressive in the first half, maintaining most of the possesion and winning most of the 50/50 balls (a drastic change from their lackluster performance against UVA in the ACC tourney). After a few good chances, Danny Kramer found the back of the net off a cross from Freshman Zach Pope. Coastal wasn't able to get a shot off in the first half. Near the end of the half a CCU player collided with his own keeper and had to leave the game. He was apparently having a lot of pain in his neck and left the field on a stretcher shortly before the second half began. The second half was much like the first. CCU had a couple good counter opportunities, but Duke was able to score again when junior Blake Camp made a beautiful move in the corner and brought the ball along the endline before centering to a sliding Charowski for a 2-0 lead. CCU had a great opportunity to get on the board a bit later when they were awarded a pk, but it was blocked by Trowbridge. This took alot of the wind out of CCU's sails. There was a really scary moment with about 15 minutes remaining. Duke took a corner and a Duke and CCU player collided heads while going for the header. Both players went down and the CCU player began having a seizure (play was stopped immediately and the players frantically motioned over the trainers). The CCU player left on a stretcher, but I still haven't heard anything about his condition. Hopefully both of the injured CCU players are ok. After a 15 or so minute pause for the injury, Coastal Carolina's players' heads were (understandably) not in the game. Duke scored within about 2 minutes to put the game out of reach. Spencer Wadsworth almost added a 4th goal with about five minutes left but the CCU keeper had a beautiful diving save. I hope the Dukies can bring this same intensity into their second round game at ODU. I'll admit I'm a bit worried, though, as Duke has played much better at home than on the road this year.
