Well, it was a surprise that Mainz handed him the start. Normal left back Rose was suspended, but everything--including the club's website--had someone else starting.

Like last season, Mainz choking down the stretch.

    Losing 1-3 late...

Mainz had the first goal, and if held on, could have landed in a promotion spot.

    1:0 Woronin (22nd Foulelfmeter)
    1:1 Roesler (26.)
    1:2 Caillas (74.)
    1:3 Caillas (80.)

top 3 have game in hand

Duhaney wasn't involved in the goals. He had one nice cross that almost had been converted to the 2-1 lead, but unfortunately they ran into counter attacks later on. I hope that some of the top teams lose points this weekend, otherwise it might be a very uninteresting promotion 'race'

was he as horrible as he usually is?

  8. . . . and how many opponents did he hack out of the match?

I posted a couple weeks ago when he had his first start...and I was fairly critical of his performance. This time (much to my surprise!) he actually did pretty well. Now, keep in mind this was a dreadful performance by the rest of the team...so it's possible he looked adequate only in comparison. ;-) He impressed mostly with his committment and effort. He really fought...which much more than I can say for the rest of the team. He wasn't at fault for any of the goals. And (unlike last time---when he had several!) did not have any moments where his mistakes were turned into scoring chances. Surprising as it was...most of his passes actually linked up with other Mainz 05 players, and he had a couple times where he created nice space for himself with his technical ability (instead of getting caught in possesion in dangerous areas, as in the last game). I haven't seen the Kicker ratings yet, but if it were me, I'd probably rate him a 3.5 or so. A much better outing than last time. Now if only the team can get it together in time for the Koln game!

lol! did I mention how surprised I was that he didn't fall over the ball under even the slightest pressure (as in the last game)? :) well, naturally ratings are subjective (and my use the term technical ability is in Duhaney's case, relative!)...but how did Duhaney get a 4.5 if could Benni Auer receive a rating of 3.5 for this game?? I guess by basically standing at the top of the 18 waiting for less than hopeful crosses and waving your arms at the linesman while your standing in clear offside positions somehow merits a 3.5? Wha'ever. And Abel got a 4...and even tho' he's a favorite player of mine...he was at fault on 2 of the goals. There were some puzzling ratings in that respect... Freiburg won...that s&cks... top three are starting to pull away.

I think he had one or two bad games for which he was thrown out of the roster. The team played pretty well afterwards and on his position no injuries happened, so unfortunately he didn't return to the roster yet. That's pretty bitter for him, I think he is out of the team since a few months already.

Mike Duhaney starting for a good BL 2 team. Damn, it is an amazing world isn't it?This is a guy who literally could not even make an MLS roster. All I can say is good for him!

well, actually, Duhaney's only started two games, and then only through a serious rash of injuries in the back line---even the backups were hurt---so when Rose got the yellow card suspension...Duhaney got a surprise (as Buff posted above) start again. It's most likely back to the bench for him next week up in Koln. As for Grover, he had injuries at the beginning of the year, then when he got his chance, had a couple nightmare games as a sub, hasn't even seen the bench hardly since. I wish I could be more positive about their situation, being an Ami myself. :)

How does kicker do its ratings and what is the scale that they use?

Gibson needs to move somewhere else. I've heard he despises MLS and thinks it's a joke league, but I wonder if he could make it into the starting 11 for any MLS team right now? I haven't seen him play in so long I forget how good he was.

1 to 6 in 0.5 steps with 6 being worst.

In 2.Bundesliga kicker has one journalist for each team. Sometimes the journalist for the guest team travels to the game, sometimes only the journalists for the home team rates. In 2. Bundesliga they often use journalists, who are working for a local newspaper - they often don't have much clue about soccer and hardly know a player from the guest team, which partially leads to odd ratings. In this special case there were even three journalists - I guess the two locals from Fürth and Mainz plus a firm kicker journalist for this region. I don't know if in this case each journalist focusses on his team or if they talk about it.

In Bundesliga each team has at least one firm journalist (the big ones two), who works for kicker only. Each journalist travels with his team and after the games they rate all players independent from another. If they agree, then the rating is taking over, otherwise it is discussed or - if they don't agree - they do the middle rating.
