Good players we won were because they were not good enough for the bigger soccer teams

At the time... I think the Dutch would want Dest back.

I think that’s right, particularly given they’ve had two of their best guys continuously hurt in Shaw and Chilwell.

Remember when Fabian Johnson might have been like a top 10 player in the world for like a month?

    11/3/2015 - 12/8/2015.

Looked him up and Jalen Hawkins is 23 so future USMNT relevance seems unlikely

I was only today old when I found out that Juan Pablo Angel has a son who lived a significant portion of his life in New York (Red Bulls), and has 10 goals in 23 games for the Colombia U-20 NT! Anyone know if he is USMNT eligible? Is now signed to San Diego FC...

I haven't seen anything that indicates US citizenship.

    Here's what we know:
    * Born in England
    * His father was in MLS from 2007 to 2012, which lines up with the days Tomas says he lived in the US.
    * Tomas played 5 matches for Colombia at the U20 WC finals in 2023.
    * This article says Dad didn't have a Green Card when he was with the Galaxy:

Releasing Thorne Holder gave the Union an open international player slot, which Angel requires. The striker qualifies as an international player because of his Colombian citizenship and lack of an American green card or citizenship.

https://philadelphiasoccernow.com/2...-know-on-whats-happening-and-what-may-happen/ (The article says JPA was 35, so ignore the byline date and assume this is 2010 or so).

Bottom line, no Green Card for dad (and it's possible his wife had one during their residence here, but very unlikely) and not born in the US: extremely unlikely to be US eligible (and provisionally cap-tied to Colombia).

Here's a direct link to the source on reddit, no need to detour through that musky cespool just to look at a picture of reddit.

The Japanese societal expectations is really telling.

Was just looking back over the YA folders. If Anrie Chase sticks with Japan, there's also Kennedy Mifuni, CB, 6-4, 187, starter with Nagoya in the J-League.

FOTMOB has him rated as the #39 player in the J-League.

It's pretty far afield. But he's big and we're desperate.

Lastly, I want to ask you about the national team. There's been buzz in the media about whether you'll play for Japan or the USA. What are your feelings?

    Chase
: I'm going to let the national team issue play out naturally. If I need to choose at some point, I'll worry about it then; at the moment all I can do is give my best with my club. I don't know what's the best decision...I'm really not thinking too hard about it (laughs), thinking it's best to just let things unfold. I don't really know what's best. The national team is a tough question....I'm not leaning one way or the other. My club career is my top priority right now. Of course, I do want to play in the World Cup and win it!

That says a lot right there. To me, it indicates he feels a bit of an outsider to those societal expectations….

It’s a nuanced thing… People with mixed backgrounds can often feel between two worlds.

I now think we have a chance for him to join the Nats.

IMO there was always a chance with Chase because 1) his background is equally American and Japanese 2) the 2 programs are roughly comparable in strength. As it happened, he fell out of the Japan Olympic team picture when he was figuring out his game in the Stuttgart reserves - before his explosion this year, there were local fans who thought he was going to be cut loose by the club in the summer. Now Japan has the deepest CB corps in the program's history (if they can stay healthy) so he would face real competition if/when he's presumably called up in the spring...it probably comes down to whether he thinks he has a better shot at the 26 WC with the US.

His comments about hierarchy in Japanese culture etc. are kinda generic and don't offer insight into the national team issue. The bigger context is that he could either be an semi-A-list celebrity in Japan if he stars for the NT, or he could choose the US and be a guy known to....soccer fans. No idea if he cares about that kinda stuff but the extra pressure can get to some athletes in his position.

I think most players, including Chase, do have a preference. But are smart enough to keep their public comments balanced and generic.

I think, if properly and consistently reached out to with integrity, and called into a camp with the vibes crew that soft-recruited Musah/Balo (i.e. MCKINNIE, Weah, Dest, Richards, Puli, etc.)... Chase commits.

However, with that being said - if we snooze, we will lose.

It isn't clear to me that Chase is better than Richards and McKenzie. When we made the pushes for Dest, Musah, Pepi and Balogun it seemed clear (even though they were all very young) that they would be starting caliber players. I see Chase as more similar to Cardozo. A nice player to have in the mix. But not someone whose name is likely to be among the first written down by the coach.

Our CB depth is coming. But it is a couple years away. Chase would be a nice transitory piece until the cavalry arrives.

I don’t know. Richards is nearly always hurt. I don’t know if Chase would walk in and just be a lock starter either, but I’m confident that he would be competitive.
