It’s okay to say, hey guys, this certain player doesn’t seem like he’s going to break our way. Okay. I get it. He might likely won’t switch. He might not even be able to switch. Shit happens. I get it. We’ll get over it. But until that’s confirmed…. We can discuss wanting a promising young player to play for us who could actually fill a major hole in our player pool.
Nothing I'm saying is personal. You're taking it as such. This is a much more difficult case than Musah, Balogun, Tillman or those types. Article 11 Clause 1 of Japan’s nationality law states that a Japanese national who obtains another nationality by their own choice shall lose their Japanese citizenship. The law also requires those who have dual citizenship from childhood to choose one by the age of 20. It is possible that Arnie Chase had dual-citizenship because some children are able to do that. But as he has turned 20...........he HAD TO CHOOSE. And seeing as he's playing for Japan, he must be a Japanese citizen, which means he could have renounced his US citizenship. As I put in the comment above..............if did renounce his US citizenship, then he can never get it back. That's for life. [The tennis player Naomi Osaka represents Japan. She renounced her US citizenship in 2019 after the age of 20 in order to represent them at the Olympics.] This isn't about "breaking our way." It's much more difficult than that. Our only hope is that he never actually had US citizenship. Then Poch would have to convince him to renounce his Japanese citizenship, which would be a big deal. And I have no clue why he would do that. He's ensconced in the Japanese program, and coach Hajime Moriyasu has made some glowing remarks about him recently. This isn't a case of Tillman, Balogun, or Musah seeing the writing on the wall with regards to a path forward with Germany or England. I'm not saying anything new here. Every time somebody posts about this on reddit, 15 people come out to say this same thing. This one may in fact be impossible. If its possible, then tis very difficult.
As others have noted it’s unclear that Japan really enforces or checks this requirement to renounce dual citizenship.
No doubt. There's a grey area because from a beaurocratic poiint of view they don't go around ceremoniously stripping people of it. But...................................this would be a Naomi Osaka situation. High profile.
I think where we all stand, none of us really knows where the situation stands with him. Come on, journalists! Give us some real answers!!
On Chase specifically you don’t actually have to renounce said citizenship till you are 22 and he’s 20 so he wouldn’t have had to make such a choice anyways at this point.
another dual nat we'll probably be glad we won ❗️ Cole Campbell has been called up to Borussia Dortmund’s first team for their Bundesliga match against Union Berlin. ⚫️🟡🇺🇸[@RNBVB] pic.twitter.com/ccDkzxg0sl— USMNT Otaku 🇺🇸 (@USMNTOtaku) October 4, 2024
Chase almost certainly was born a US citizen (assuming his father was a US citizen at the time of his birth). I'm pretty sure the US has never gotten any player who has been in the Japanese system, and, for cultural & legal reasons, I'm not sure we will get one soon. I'd be curious if Osaka officially renounced US citizenship. I see lots of articles that say she did, but nothing that indicates it's official (the State Department puts out a list annually of those that did). She still lives in the US, so she'd have to get a visa to do so (not impossible for a rich, famous person, but a hassle). Japan may not care or be willing to pursue so as to avoid embarrassment.

Given the scarcity of quality keepers in our pipeline, we should be casting a wide net to look at everyone available.
Seems odd timing, considering MP is brand new and doesn't know the player pool. There's no way he or his people have already reached out.
