If you can believe it, CSC honchos first heard of the drum circle last week. While this seems to me to be prima facie evidence that the drum circle is innocuous, CSC will not allow the drum circle in the concourse directly behind the Barra/Nest. Their basis is that traffic cannot be blocked. Stephen Zack got this "ruling" from the RFK security honcho. However, whether it was Stephen's intervention or just a measure of good will from CSC, the area near Gate D has been deemed acceptable for the drum circle. So, either we stay in the Barra during the half or we go into the concourse and hang a right. I think we should give the new area a go. It would be a shame to have a confrontation with security and it would be a shame to lose one of our most storied traditions. I am shocked that the 7 year old drum circle was heretofore unknown. Don't kill the messenger. Thanks, Stephen. That's the way it is, Friday, June 20, 2003. GM
And CSC expects anyone to take them seriously and to respect their decisions after another arbitrary rule after 7 years.
In a word, YES. This is from the top. The individual security guys on the beat have had no problem with the drum circle for seven years. Now that their boss has given them a clear and easily understandable directive, they will enforce it. I suggest we bend a bit and go down the hallway a few feet to have our fun -- no big deal. GM
So what's all this about professional soccer in DC? Bunch o' morons at the CSC. Just enforcing rules for the sake of enforcing rules.
While shocking that they've never heard of the drum circle (I guess they thought it was RFK falling apart that made all the noise at half-time in the concourse), I am not surprised about this ruling. Of course, justifying it because it blocks traffic is just BS! Those 'bike rack' 'knee busting' barriers that they erect at the mouth of each stadium entrance do more to block traffic than the drum circle ever could. Oh well, I guess CSC won't be happy until they run us out so they can get baseball in! (I bet they'll hear in 2020 that North Virginia got the team in 2005...)
FYI last game I saw one of the food service or security guys-was wearing a short-sleeve blue shirt-attack some guy in a DC United black short-sleeve shirt w/a walkie-talkie. The guy in the black shirt dropped a bunch of ketchup or mustard packs in a cardboard box, and didn't clean it up. The guy in the blue shirt got upset and threatened harm, then started chasing the guy in the black shirt after the guy in the black shirt left but then looked back. The drum circle doesn't block off anything. There's no food to the right of where they are, as far as I understand. My suggestion to anybody that wants to build a stadium in the District? Take a guess.
Oh yeah....more genius. That sure does a hell of a lot. Like you can't walk in to your official entrance and then walk around to a spot you want. The stadium is mostly empty so take a seat as long as it's not in a crowded area.
CSC first whistles, then smoking, now drum circles. Soon we'll need a note from our Mom's saying we can attend the games in the first place.
It is not that a few feet are such a big deal it is more the arbitrary decision making and enforcement from the CSC people. This time it comes from the top but there are only two conclusions that can be drawn. A) For seven years the top guys at CSC have not been doing there job B) that CSC is arbitrary
I've always wondered about the placement of those "bike rack" barriers, and whether or not they're a fire hazard (they certainly limit the space people have to exit...). Maybe we should call the fire marshall about that...
Well who exactly sets the security policy? I thought CSC was a contractor of RFK and enforced the rules set by Goldwater, etc. I see this coming from the top of RFK, not CSC. K
i'd like to think ole bobby is too busy out spending city coin to give a fig about the drum circle, me thinks i smell the stench of lenny lambert here. this thing about "blocking" the concourse is unadultered ************************e--the drum circle no more blocks the concourse than do the condiment stands, souvenir stands, people handing out what door prize is on that night, etc. as noted above csc or rfk or whomever has those stupid barriers up. i think if they are going to move the drum circle then they should stop the horde of children who run roughshod over the 200 sections following the t-shirt crew around, stop the program handouts and remove the barriers. this starts a pretty stupid and petty chain of events if they are going to be consistent.
my major concern was that CSC/rfk did this unilaterally but they did include oscar in the discussion. i spoke to oscar and marshall and they agreed with tommy's point that while it seemed stupid no point in losing something as cool as the drum circle to csc's pettiness.
Idiocy. Which is to be expected from CSC. In true bureaucratic style, they have engaged in mindless and counterproductive action in order to justify their own existance. Yet the greatest threat to personal safety at RFK still remains. The ushers continue to chain the aisles to all the 100-level seats closed. Those chains are blocking egress routes from the stands. If something bad ever happened for whatever reason and those section had to be evacuated, there would be a tragedy, guaranteed. Could someone explain to me that chaining-off narrow aisles is any less of an obstacle than people congragating in the concourse? Well, if CSC is to be consistant, well, then, the only advantage is that thank God they're going to finally close the concession stands. You see, people standing in line at very slow concession stands is a clear obstacle to free passage. They must be closed. Of course, that will disrupt revenue to the Stadium Authority, especially the sale of BEER, which probably causes more problems inside the stadium than everything else combined. But since that brings in the bucks I guess that's OK. Idiocy. I'd be happy to say that to the face of anybody who runs CSC.
It was Doogie Houser MD's fault. The CSC doesn't even understand their own rules. They have never been consistant with any policy. Most of them are just handed a jacket and told to "be a security professional." We will move down to the next tunnel. However, it's just one more reason to hate those idiots. Maybe one of the bigmouthed saviors of peace who spouted their garbage off last game can focus on the real downpressers the CSC. Those barriers should be explained, we've never had a real justification for them. Also, don't be so sure that management is actually looking out for us aside from a few posts. You might be suprised.
Good points Blocking access? Crowding danger? Stinking bike racks Chained sections Concession lines Only opening two exits for entrance into game I've personally helped make a way through for kids, families and a few Navy enlisted people (last game) in front of the drum circle. Many people enjoy watching it as well.
actually at every half time this year some of us in the Barra have always assured that there was space to easily pass through, understanding others fun shouldn't be overwhelmed by ours. maybe the stadium commission/csc ought to read some Bentham or JS Mill. the only inference i can draw is that the stadium (who must be in concert with this) must want to play little games like this in order to distract from the many problems in the basic management of RFK (not to mention the glorious stadium commission).
CSC Strike Back... AGAIN. I honestly think were giving this group too much credit. The drum circle was harassed last week by this guy: The PRIOR week he was embarassed and ridiculed by the Barra/Nest for his excessive enforcement of the stadium non smoking policy. I believe he deliberately waded into the drum circle this week to start a confrontation. He radioed up to Lenny and the brass saying he had discovered a "problem." They sent several people down. Comically he brought two yellow shirted CSC guards into the circle with him to "help". These two guards saw how ridiculous this attempt was and simply stood back LAUGHING at the above "supervisor". They told me he was "an idiot." They eventually sent down some more serious goons. I stopped one to ask him politely what rule was being broken and he would not give me a straight answer. When I told him we have been doing this drum circle for around 5 years he told me straightfaced that "rules change." --Personally this looks and smells just about like my current lawsuit. Yet, I am with the others who also say this isn't a battle worth fighting. We should just bite our tongues and move down. BUT, at the same time Zack or "Lurking" Lenny need to recognize the issues with the above guard or there could be serious problems. he has been the ONLY CSC employee to cause serious issuess this year.
Everybody Dance! My ever-thoughtful wife has made the following suggestion: anybody who cares about how we fans are treated at RFK Stadium should make a special effort to join the Drum Circle at halftime at tomorrow night's match, to show our support especially for the D.C. United fans who started this great tradition.
If ya gotta pick your battles, this one's not one we're gonna win. I do however think that the goons with CSC will have a few extra of there thugs paying us a visit at halftime. I for one will bite my tongue and let them play cop for the day.
Re: CSC Strike Back... AGAIN. A big part of me says screw that. Another part of me says yeah, you're probably right. And another part of me says, screw all this stuff...I've just about had enough. I'll stay home and watch the game.
Re: Re: CSC Strike Back... AGAIN. i puzzled over that one myself and if they had not included oscar or one of us "elders" in the discussion i would be on the warpath. but first off, oscar agreed with them already, so at least they included him. second, it is a battle we are unlikely to win. and while i understand your frustration and the pleasures of TV, csc/rfk can't get rid of the very best things about coming to the stadium--the company of a group of men and women that love DCU like you do. you'd be hurting us, not csc by staying home...
Re: Re: Re: CSC Strike Back... AGAIN. I get your drift my brother, but the CSC/RFK/DCU Front office is really taking the enjoyment out of the game day experience. I think they won't be satisfied until they turn us all into a bunch of golf clappers. And I would rather die than to let that happen. Read the front of our new Tshirt..... Words to live by.
"Muerte o Gloria" is on the Tshirt, but I still want to know who the heck Gloria is! Mad drumming ensues..... GM
