No real Group of Death here, so the first round might not be too interesting. I think the fact that African heavyweights Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa didn't make it this year has contributed to that.

I think that there is a humongous difference between the quality of youth and senior sides so it would be pretty hard to make predictions. For example, Egypt and the USA aren't considered really strong footballing nations in general, but their youth teams are pretty good. Still I consider Group D and F to be the toughest out there with four good teams in Egypt, Colombia, Japan, and England and Group F with the USA, Asian champions Korea, Paraguay, and Germany.

    check out Slovakia's luck.

Slovakia has a quality youth side, they finished third in the U19 Euro Championship (beat Spain 2-1).

I'd bet my last dollar that if there's a war, they will have to delay and move the event and if not, the US team will not be there.
Just isn't going to happen.. It's scheduled for early March. Worst possible time it appears, if you believe the retired generals, and others, on when any war might start.
Hope things work out for the event.

I wonder if the tournament could be relocated if there's a war. Indeed, if I were organizing this thing, after last night's speech, I'd be looking for an alternate location.

If they don't already have the plans in place to move it, it will have to be delayed. March is just around the corner in terms of an event of that size.

Japan has been considered a secondary host if it heats up in the Middle East.

That's good to hear.. I couldn't imagine that they would not have already been making plans to make a quick move, if needed.

Either Spain or Japan will be the alternative host of the tournament.

Assuming the Korean team is anything like the senior team then I'd think that Group F is the group of death. If that assumptions wrong them Group D is probably the killer.

Re: Re: Draw for the FIFA World Youth Championship

I agree with you.. It looks like a very tough group for the Yanks. Getting out of that bunch will be an acomplishment for anyone.

Group F = "Group of Death"

Group F is the "group of death" of this draw as it is the only group where every single team has been at least a semi-finalist at the World Youth Championships.

Korea seems to be a top contender. They are the current AFC U-20 champions (their tenth time):
    http://www.fifa.com/Service/MR_A/46002_E.html

and they beat Ireland and drew with France last week:
    http://footballasia.com/mrel/news_50763_E.html

This same team also beat Argentina 1-0 last August.
They've met the US team three times so far at the U-20 level and have come out on top with a win and two draws.

Paraguay, of course, finished fourth last time around, and Germany will feature a squad full of Bundesliga players. The outcome of this group will be anyone's guess.

You've got to be kidding, we'll go out in the first round. Any half decent U20 player will still be with his club while this is on.

I expect Ireland to do very well. We have a couple of top quality players (ie Sean Thornton is becomming be a regular for Sunderland) who are expected to be released. In fact, I would give us a fair chance of getting to the semis if not the final.

Yep! All the best U-20 players for England will stay with their clubs. AT that level the clubs rule and the International team come a very far away second.....thats how the senior squad will be like soon!!!
