Anyone care to clear up the Revs draft order for the upcoming draft? With the Nowak fiasco, Serna, and what ever else going on, what picks to do we have. The dallas board has us picking 8th and 10th. That correct? what about round 2?
As the result of the failed Nowak trade we were to get the Fires natural first round pick if they finished in the top five of the table---ergo the 10th over all pick. Of course our natural pick is #8. I don't think I ever hear the details about the Serna pick up by LA. Suspect it would be a second round pick at best. I'm wondering if the Revs might be interested in trading both of their first round picks to some team higher up in the order to get a single player SN has had his eye on? Of note the Revs have not done a lot of drafting past the first few rounds but it's obvious that they have entered the draft with a well worked out plan and their picks have been good ones. Does anyone know when the draft will be held? Now that the college season is coming to an end we will soon be seeing lists of players and scouting reports. I doubt we will see as much talent available this year as last ( last year a lot of players came out early to try to get on the Olympic Team) but there is always some jewels to be plucked by people who know how to judge talent. I do enjoy the hot stove season. George
Freddy Adu signed with MLS today. MLSnet.com http://mlsnet.com/content/03/mls1118adu.html says he will be available in the SuperDraft January 16th. WWZN reported that he is already assigned to DC United. Maybe DC has traded with Dallas for the #1 pick? As far as the Revs, our top 3 needs are speed, speed and speed.
oh this offseason has gotten off to a great start. Yallop taking the Canada job* Sigi taking the Burn job* Burn trading their first round pick to DC for a major player allocation MLS signing Adu for 6 years *not official, but highly rumored. The Sigi story should air after MLS Cup because of his contract, same with Yallop
Let's see... We are 5 deep at striker (maybe only 4 if JMM retires). Our midfield is considered one of the best in MLS with Joseph, Cancela, Ralston and Kamler. All of Jason Moore, Pat Noonan and Marshal Leonard have proven themselves capable of playing here. We have one of the best keepers,if not the best keeper, left in the league....... Which leaves DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE. Llamosa is getting old, Franchino is volatile and his speed is suspect, Heaps has improved a great deal, but still wouldn't be considered a strong defender, Rusty is good, Duoade seemed to prove that least year was a fluke. We need speed on defense and we need depth on defense. We should be trading a striker or two, plus a draft pick to get TWO quality defenders. Plus we have an SI...and an allocation we better get two defenders. How long have we been saying this?? (I think since Okaroh was left open in the expansion draft!!!)
As far as I know DCU doesn't have a first round pick havin traded it away. They will get a you-suck allocation and they have a bunch of major players they could trade. Dallas needs a major upgrade. If Sigi takes over I suspect he will amke major changes.
DCU will not get a "you suck" allocation because they did not suck enough. Dallas and Columbus sucked enough and will be rewarded for their efforts.
Agree re: Serna. As LA will be having massive cap problems this year, DS may be moving on again. I could see the Revs wanting to trade to move up (Chad Marshall?), but suspect the cost would be too high unless American internationals become part of the mix. As it is there are five picks ahead of ours, so who knows? There was another thread (MLS News and Analysis) in which it as rumored that Dallas would get either the DCU allocation for Etch retiring plus one of DCU's SI slots (including cap space? - it didn't say) at least, or if Etch didn't retire, some equivalent level of compensation. Since DCU doesn't have any new bodies coming in, one imagines it will be from the existing roster, and one imagines it will be painful. My guess: Milton Reyes plus one of their P-40's. And you're right George, the hot stove season is fun, though way, way too long.
the revs are loaded with draft picks and have an allocation (from the Hernandez to Necaxa deal)... but they have no cap space... either they are going to go the pro40 route (where players don't count against the cap) or they are going to have to jetison some salary... it is going to be a tricky off-season for a coach who hasn't had to worry so much about getting rid of talent in order to upgrade... rand
That first round pick has already been used, so you could say that DCU has no remaining first round pick.
To answer the original question asked by firstshirt, I will add a sticky to this forum with the draft order as I know it now, and modify it as needed.
Let's not forget the strong possibility of an expansion draft if the league expands over the winter. All of a sudden our depth at forward might not be so great. I think we may just end up going with the "best available" player option. I also wonder if we might just deal for a defender. Getting a CD out of the draft is very difficult. The best one this past year probably was the kid for the Rapids. I like him, and he's got a lot of potential. But he made bad gaffes in both of their playoff games that led to goals. It can be very painful starting a rookie CD - just ask Dallas how well their young defense worked out. Lee
The expansion draft, if there is one, is the 1000 lb elephant. As Lee says, our vaunted depth goes fooooosh in a couple of rounds. So until we know, which should be Sunday I suspect, all bets are off. I should imagine that Nicol, et all have two scenarios in place already and our speculation on them will fuel many a winter's fire. On a related note, waking up to front page headlines re. Freddy Adu in the Globe and Times gives a warm glow to an MLS fans' heart. If Chivas/America come in this week we will run the table in possible publicity. The Revs off season manuvering will be highly interesting relative to these events. JIM DOW
It would definitely be interesting to see who is going to be available to this draft. I know the list of new P40s won't come out till probably late December IMHO. I know there are a couple of UCLA kids I wouldn't mind seeing us draft.
Just for some historical perspective, then the Revolution made the following players available in October of 1997 for the expansion draft in 1998 that saw both Chicago and Miami enter the league: Jeff Causey, Scott Coufal, Giuseppe Galderisi, Erik Imler, Rob Jachym, John Kerr, Jr., Steve Klein, Alberto Naveda, Francis Okaroh, Darren Sawatzky, Evans Wise. Each MLS club at the time listed a minimum of ten players from their respective rosters. The only Revolution player selected by either team was Francis Okaroh... and long-time Revolution supporters (Tom Hill?) can easily recall the both fan sentiment respective of the move and those circumstances that led to his being listed. Hey, say what you want: Paul Keegan is still playing (for Bohemians in Ireland, 6 goals on the season to this point), and has seen action this year in UEFA Champions League qualifying action. So if we had to list 10, who would they be? TF III JMM I. Kante J. Moore D. Fabbro J. Franchino C. Llamosa L. Cullen K. Singer C. Bagley I'm sure I'm missing someone real obvious, but that's off the top of my head and in no particular order. Depending a bit on team needs, the only two I would see likely taken from this list are Franchino and Cullen. I'm not saying that they are the best players, just given their positions, age, versatility, salary, etc. that's who I would expect to be taken. A case could be made for listing Kamler and maybe D. Kante instead of these two. Kam's getting up there in age, and is Kante an SI? Lee
So the "Official Story" is that in order to get the #1 pick, DC gave Dallas an allocation it didn't have? I thought the Mutts were the only team allowed to do that. That assumes Etch retires, and from what I hear, that isn't official. Although one of my friends who supports DC says that he will play in Greece next year, so maybe that's where the allocation came from? Tom
Anyone know if any of the u17s have signed pro 40 contracts yet? Who are the top colleges seniors? Top defenders? I understand that columbus is almost certain to take Marshall with the #2. Then dallas has #3 and #4, SJ #5, KC #6, LA #7, NE #8, SJ #9 and NE #10. So leaving out adu and Marshall, who are the top players available so far coming out of college?
Just to quibble, San Jose's position isn't determined yet. If they beat the Fire in the final they'd get the #10 pick leaving us at #8 and #9. Not a huge difference, but it could be important. That said I'd love to hear some of our talent guru's answer your questions. Inquiring minds want to know...
I don't think this is correct. The draft order is based on the Table at the end of the regular season. The playoffs have nothing to do with the order. The Fire won the Shield and would have had the 10th pick. The Revs have the 8th and 10th pick.
As Mike said, not true. This is last year's original draft order: (1) D.C. United (2) MetroStars (3) Kansas City (4) Chicago (5) Dallas (6) San Jose (7) Columbus (8) Colorado (9) New England (10) Los Angeles If order had been decided by season standing (with differences emphasized): (1) D.C. United (2) MetroStars (3) Kansas City (4) Chicago (5) Columbus (6) New England (7) Colorado (8) Dallas (9) San Jose (10) Los Angeles So our 2004 SuperDraft pick from Chicago could still be #9 or #10.
I haven't heard of any signings, yet, but I know there are several guys who we can expect soon. Alot of the U-17 squad were already in MLS(Gaven, Memo, etc), although the two big names - Adu and Szetela - hadn't. Adu has signed now. Szetela is likely to go to Europe as he's eligible for an EU passport which will get him around the age restrictions. Most of those not signed yet will be going to college although a couple are staying in residency and may decide to take the Pro route. Jamie Watson did fairly well, and I'm not sure what his plans are. One name to watch is A-League rookie of the year David Testo. He's playing for the U-23's and doing fairly well. I'm sure Mike has a much better feel for the college guys who will be coming out this year. I only saw UConn play, and they were not exactly brimming with prospects this year. Lee
Ah Sooooo, I stand corrected. I completely missed/forgot that the order had been changed last year by the playoffs. Thanks for the correct info. George
