"Una vez se firmen los documentos correspodientes, esperamos que Fernández arribe a Cali el fin de semana para sumarse desde el próximo lunes a actividades con el equipo en Pance", dijo el presidente del Cali, Óscar Astudillo, quien considera que "con estos refuerzos tenemos un plantel bastante completo".

Review my thread on the Sounders board. This started in Twitter yesterday and has been confirmed both by Deportivo Cali, Nacional of Uruguay, but not yet the Sounders. Deportivo Cali's offical Twitter page tweeted Fernandez was signed.

Flaco played 54 games and scored 13 goals for the Sounders.

What has not been mentioned is if this is a transfer or a loan.... Which would seem odd given Fernandez has 1 more year on his MLS contract.

Looks like Seattle is trying to bring in Christian Tiffert from FC Koln. He will have to be a DP so Seattle would have to get rid of one of their current DPs and Fernandez was the logical choice.

I think Tiffert plays for Kaiserslautern not Koln.

Verdu or Tiffert would be nice. I've seen it hinted that if it's a loan, Fernandez could possibly return for non-DP money.

If the loan rumors are true, then it is only going to be a one year loan. However, this is the start of the third year in Flaco's 4 year contract (he was brought in mid-season of 2010). If he does return to the Sounders, he'll still have one year of his contract left and the Sounders would have to pony up about $250k in allocation money to buy down his contract.

Another thing to consider is that Deportivo Cali was in town last week trying to sell the Sounders the 30% of Fredy Montero that they own, which they valued that 30% at $800,000. It wouldn't surprise me if Flaco being loaned to them is being done in lieu of paying cash for part or all of that 30%.

He already is making non-DP money. The transfer fee seattle paid is why he's a DP.

I don't know if you were sarcastic or not.. but Cali is not a small team here in colombia. It is considered one on the big clubs here. they are the 4th best club in Colombia (based on titles) after Millonarios, America and Nacional. They have reached Libertadores final twice.

I've read this in many places, but his guaranteed compensation listed in the MLS Players Union report is $366k. Those numbers don't include transfer fees, so he is making just about DP money in salary and bonuses.

So is he gone for good? Or just a loan?

It is probably more accurate to say that his salary is not why he is listed as a DP. Assuming there isn't any non-salary/non-bonus numbers included in his contract, $366k isn't generally a DP salary because it is "easy" to use 16k of allocation money to buy down the budget hit and drop him below the DP line.

Good question. The initial reports were that it was a 1 year loan, but since then I've seen a number of tweets with them discussing Flaco coming to town to negotiate contract details.. Is that standard for loans?

See Conor Casey (listed at 400K but not a DP).

As of today Fernandez is still a Sounder. Will the Sounders just come out and say if this is gonna happen or not?

Seattle won't comment on anything that could potentially hurt the loan agreement from taking place.

This is what i saw today on twitter

    Translation of tweet

"Today would be finalizing the business of Alvaro Fernandez possibly in the afternoon, is expected .."

Strange to play a player that you're trying to move in a friendly. Doesn't seem wise to risk an injury.
