ok, whats up with it when, i download an album, all zipped up (as the usually come)

so i open up the album folder, see the files, theyre all an appropriate size for mp3s, and itll either say its an mp3 or a windows media player file, yet, neither winamp nor media player will play the file.

    what gives?

this tends to happen to 1 of every 3 albums i download, and i cant figure out if theyre in some ********ed up format or what.

    any takers?

what client are you using? Some clients, like BitTornado, don't free the files to other programs until you end the torrent/stop seeding. You often find new formats on torrents such as FLAC or OOG, but I've never seen them not labeled as such.

    i use azureus.

its not a problem where they wont open because of being used by another app (as i assume would be the case if azureus had them locked in), its more like, i open it, and winamp kinda freezes up for a bit, then says it failed to open file, and windows media tries and says its an unkown format and that it cant be opened.

I'm guessing they are FLAC, APE, OOC, etc. or any other file type that you don't have installed.

I don't really have any experience with the newer type music files like the ones mentioned above, so....

You can try downloading G Spot and see if it can identify the file and what codec it might need (it's mostly used for videos though, it can identify other types like music and rar-type files, but it's not really meant for this...might help)

You can try downloading Windows Media Player Classic, which plays a lot of video files that my normal Windows Media Player couldn't play even though the same codecs were on the computer, so it might help with audio files as well.

I've also heard good things about the VLC media player - gonna download that one soon to see those coolio effects on high quality vids :D - although I think if it doesn't work with the classic player, it probably won't in this one either, but it won't hurt to try.

I think chances are bigger that you might need to download a special codec though.
