I think if Cannon end up re-signing with MLS the Quakes should bench him and start Conway instead to show Cannon that he isn't as awesome as he thinks he is.
I can only agree if Cannon leaves. I like Conway, but overall I think Cannon is better. I don't know, he never seamed like he was over confident to me. At the begining of last season I asked him about playing for the USMNT and he said, "My #1 goal is to represent my country well and to try as hard as I can, that's what drive me." Not too arrogent at all. He isn't Friedel (yet) but he's on his way.
One thing I don't think Joe has thought about is that his ferverent desire to play in Europe/leave the quakes might begin to create a level of animosity towards from us fans. I mean if he doesn't want to stay in SJ, and he has to "settle" for the quakes every time his trials fall through, what are we supposed to think. Think about it Joe.
I agree on some points. However, this isn't about Joe wanting to "leave the Quakes." It is about his desire to play in Europe. Joe isn't the only player who can be "accused" of wanting that. It remains a business and the harsh truth is Europe plays better football right now. If Joe comes back, I'd welcome having his services for our team again. He is among the best in MLS. He has been great for this franchise. Ask yourself the same question about Wade! Yet, I'd be thrilled beyond belief to have him back, too. True, it is all about one's perception but I won't be put off by Joe's desire to someday play in Europe. Like LD, I'll just be happy we have him for at least one more year.
"Waaaaaaaaaa.........." What makes Joe a great GK is that he strives to get better and better and to take his game farther. If he didn't, then y'all would be complaining about how he's not as good as Howard or Rimando or whoever. Soccer players switch clubs. It happens. Besides, it's about time Conway got a chance to impress. If he can't make it, then we have other options.
In part Joe wants to play in Europe because it would be fun, and he might be able to "take his game to the next level," or attract more attention from Bruce Arena. But let's not forget that if he goes to Europe, Joe is going to make at least twice, maybe three or four times as much money as he's making now. Come on! You'd go too in his shoes. And the current rumor is that Howard makes roughly twice as much as Joe? Is someone in the MLS HQ smoking crack or what? I'd take Joe over Howard or Rimando in a heart beat and there's no chance that either of them are worth twice what Joe is. No, Joe wants the money and the prestige, and MLS made him a crap offer. Especially in light of what they are paying Howard. I hope that Conway is up to MLS level. His distribution is going to be great, I hope he can bring up his shot stopping quickly. GO QUAKES!! - Mark
Conway sucks, he seems afraid to touch the ball. That's not good. Pray for a swift — and favorable — resolution to Joe's contract negotiation...
Long live Josh Saunders!!! Also, I would pick Howard over Joe 10 times out of 10. A certain guy named Bruce seems to agree with me . Sean
If Jon sucked, he wouldn't be asked back year after year. Jon has a lot of growing to do with his game.....but it's the kind of growingthat happens when you get playing time. He needs to play, and he will develope into a great keeper.
I think there's too much crack to go around! Joe's a huge asset to this team. When we sucked, he was right there for the fans -- jumping into the stands after games, handing off keeper gloves, etc. His passion and enthusiasm bring the casual fans back, game after game. Besides being a nice guy, he's one of the best goalkeepers in MLS. Maybe not perfect in every aspect, but way better than most. If he leaves, there are some big shoes to fill. Mike
I agree wholeheartedly with this post. To suggest that the quakes can just simply "replace" Joe Cannon is misguided. He is the reigning goalkeeper of the year and has been in the top 3 GAA the past two years. Mobility throughout clubs is standard in Europe. Joe has been an incredible asset to the quakes for the last 4 years, and I am sure that if he comes back, he will continue to impress. Let's just hope he does.
Who is Johnny Walker? Has anyone ever heard of that guy? Has he ever won an MLS championship? Two-time all-star? MLS Goalkeeper of the Year? All-time MLS save percentage leader?
Certainly, I would have thought that a person with a moniker like "Manchester" would have heard of Johnny Walker!?! He's enjoyed great success with the Black and Red!
If you have followed any American Abroad reports, you should know about him. He's played for Universidad Catolica in the Chilean First Division, one of the few stable teams in Chile. He's won at least one domestic title and has ventured far into the Libertadores Cup with them. The Official Website of Catolica New Release on Walker (en espanol)
Here's a Google translation: The foreign account that goes away by the economic depression that crosses the Creole soccer, but that will be crossed for all the life. "This club was my first love", affirms with nostalgia. Jonny Walker takes in arms its "Chilean", as it calls to Seth, his son of six months, and it feels in the spectacular balcony of the house that is on the verge of leaving. The American doorman must return in five days to an equipment of his country, where he could even be one of the arqueros of the selection (to see box). "My future is sure but to avoid mufa Chilean I prefer not to say anything", affirms the ex- doorman of Catholic University, with its unmistakable foreign accent. "the truth, I go away a little sad reason why it is happening in Chile", adds while it does morisquetas to him to the small Seth. - one goes away by the economic depression of Chilean soccer? - Yes. And there are many players who will do the same. With the matches without reduction really nocáut in almost all the clubs comes. - But you knew how you came the hand. - You know, like many, never I thought that the reality was going to be so hard, with a so black near future. - It thought to follow in Catholic University then? - It is that it was called on to me to live the dream of which was Catholic and what was Chilean soccer. That is to say, a foreigner winning a silver that was a madness. Until a day, Juvenal said to me: Jonny, the life of wealth in Chile went away and never it is going to return. One never wants to fall in the account of the things, until they happen. Walker arrived in July from 1997 at Chile, was eight months on approval with the youthful ones crossed, was lent to Huachipato and the last year was the titular arquero of the champion of the Match of Opening. "Aside from the results, never in my life part of a group with so great players had felt me. It found me of equal to equal with Lenci, Alvarez, Ramirez, Ormazábal, the Milo, with all. And Walker was there, between means! A gringo! It was very, very good ", counts excited. - You and their family was very comfortable here. - Buf! Imagínate! In Chile and Catholic University we lived like kings. In addition, we have many friends and that is much more valuable that the silver or the titles. When I think that I go away I feel like sad means, but in short, now comes another stage. - It will return to Chile then. - Surely. When it has 60 years I hope to be with all my companions, in San Carlos, celebrating new championships. I will be always crossing, although she goes to me. Catholic is my first love and I now hope to be able to serve to him as contact to the club in the United States. The foreign bet by Wirth Jonny Walker prefers not to say anything on its next equipment, although most probable it is than it is Los Angeles Galaxy. What yes it tells, and with desire, is that it has the great opportunity of being selected of its country. "We spoke a pair ago of weeks with the people of MLS (Major League Soccer) and that possibility stays. You see? I am not so bad ", says, being excited with which it could be its participation in the eliminatory one to Germany 2006. "Mainly because to the Concacaf they gave him means fitted more", adds. - and what seems to him their reemplazante in the UC, Leonardo Cauteruchi? - Very good, but it will have much work, because there is a pair of youthful very good, specially Rainer Wirth. If to the press it likes Miguel Pinto and Eduardo Wolves, better they wait for, because it is really extraordinary. This boy has everything: he comes out well, he has great reflections and good jump not as much... although as I, says Walker, approaching the recorder as if he threw a stature to him in person.
I read somewhere that Johnny Walker is planning on leaving and returning to the USA to possibly play for the MLS, and is willing to take a contract for around $100,000 That would be a good fall-back plan for the Quakes if Cannon is able to make it over in Europe
"You know, like many, never I thought that the reality was going to be so hard, with a so black near future. - It thought to follow in Catholic University then? - It is that it was called on to me to live the dream of which was Catholic and what was Chilean soccer. That is to say, a foreigner winning a silver that was a madness. Until a day, Juvenal said to me: Jonny, the life of wealth in Chile went away and never it is going to return..." web translations...*sigh* (We ARE talking about Jonny Walker the GK and not Johnny Walker the drinkypoo, right?)
As an "impartial" Burn fan, I think losing Cannon would be a big loss for SJ and MLS. I like Howard, but Cannon was the best GK in MLS last year. Which is why we gave him our version of that award. Hard to begrudge a guy wanting to go to Europe for the money and "higher" level of play, but as an opponent I respect he will be missed.
Repored on the NY/NJ board that Howard has recently re-signed with MLS for close to $300,000 a year for I believe another 3 years.
