Doug Warren has surfaced as the back-up to Matt Reis in New England (Aidan Brown will be sidelined for a while with a concussion and the 3rd stringer - Kyle Singer - is also injured). He is the back-up in tonight's game and is listed on the NE roster on mlsnet.com. I am not sure if he is a MLS floating back-up goalie like Clint Baumstark was last year. It seems as if the GK floaters may be permanently placed (Baumstark in Columbus this year and Andrew Terris in Dallas) . Perhaps Warren realized that there will be goalkeeper jobs available next year in Salt Lake City (or in LA with Chivas USA if he brushes up on his Spanish) if he can somehow continue in the league this year.

MLS has the option of keeping a player's contract or releasing him from the league when he's waived by a team. I wonder if MLS kept Warren's contract and now will make him a rent-a-goalie the rest of the season? Otherwise, is he getting paid game by game? I thought he'd end up in the A-League to get some playing time. I think Warren was in the second year of a standard contract, making $2520. If so, technically MLS could probably keep him 2 more seasons at 5% bumps though I doubt he'd like that and it would be bad PR recruiting young GK's to sign with the league.

It was my understanding that DC United offered him a developmental contract with the intent to loan him to Virginia Beach in the A-League for the season - these actions would then allow United to sign Perkins to a regular team contract. Warren balked at that idea - it would be MLS or something non-soccer (i.e. post-graduate college courses). Subsequently, Warren needed to be waived in order to sign Perkins to his regular contract so that he did not have to work in the sporting goods store anymore. Perhaps when goalies started dropping like flies on other MLS teams (i.e. Garlick - Dallas, Brown - NE, Jordan - Columbus), MLS made him a rent-a-goalie for this year which would open the possibility of being at least a #2 for the Salt Lake City Strikers or Saints or whatever they will be called in 2005.

Any source confirming he is now a rent-a-goalie other than his being at the NE game? Thanks. I hadn't heard him being offered a DEV contract but it makes sense. I can understand his not wanting to take that pay cut.

I still think DC made a huge mistake in letting him go, but oh well. Best of luck to him. And if he's the "rent-a-goalie" for the rest of the year, I'm sure he'll have a job come next season.

I wonder what are the odds of him coming back to bite us in the ass later on this season or even next year.

I'd say its pretty good. Of course, with Chivas coming next year, maybe Rimando is a candidate for their starting GK and Warren will come back!?!?

    Considering his career won/loss? Zero.

I really don't think his Win/Loss record is indicative of his talent or potential.

It's hardly fare to place all the blame for his record on him. For some of those games he didn't exactly have a great team in front of him.

I don't recall the defense for his one game this year being very good either.

There's little doubt in my mind Doug Warren will be a good MLS keeper, I just don't think he had the time to prove it on this team.

Would it be worse than any schisms he may have caused within the locker room by remaining on the team?

I'm so sick of the statement of someone coming back to "bite us in the ass". Right now the league has 9 other teams besides DC United, meaning that unlike a lot of professional sports, you play every single team multiple times every single season. I think the whole thing about people coming back and playing great against DC is blown way out of proportion, because there are so many opportunities for them to do well against them. The people who always bring this up are always quiet when a certain released player will have 2 or 3 mundane games against DC, but then as soon as they have even a decent one where they get an assist or something everyone comes out and is like, "how could DC ever have traded him that's the stupidest thing they ever did he always comes back and bites us in the ass." There's just no credibility to that argument until the league grows significantly and a player plays well against United virtually every time he steps on the pitch against them.

The kid was rumored to have serious issues with the coaching staff, was potentially a locker room cancer, and has one of the worst all time records as a goalie for someone who has more than 5 starts. Get over the fact that he's gone.

Christ - I mean who the hell pissed in your corn flakes this morning. First it was railing on Q - now its railing on Warren. It is well documented your love for Rimando but what the hell did Doug do to end up so far in the $hithouse? Is your argument all based on conjecture that he was a locker room cancer?

Doug started all of five games - he lost 3 and tied 2. Given the crap defense that the team played down the stretch last year that record is not that attrocious (don't even get me started on the freebie goals Petke gave NY this year). His GAA last year is essentially the same as Rimando's this year - so how was he that terrible?

Yeah, I'd say Rimando is pretty much a shoo-in for the Chivas starting job unless Perkins implodes for you guys in the second half of the season.

    why, is Nicky Mexican?
and what about Zach Thornton or one of the other many goalkeepers out there?
I'd say it's too early to speculate...but that's just naivete on my part since I'm sitting here typing a message onto BigSpeculator.com

It's my understanding as well that Rimando is half-Mexican, half-Phillipino. IIRC, there was actually an interview a couple years back where he talked about his ethnic heritage. Perhaps someone remembers where it was and can dig it up.

    ... edit ...

    A quick search found this:

    Article #6: http://www.barnburners.com/news/01/mls/0503.html

So he's actually 3/4 of Mexican descent - not half as was earlier thought.

That'll be more than good enough for Chivas!

Even though I would have liked to have seen Rimando's salary let go instead of Warren's, since it would have cleared more cap room, I think keeping Rimando was the right play because of he'll be our token sacrifice in the expansion draft to Chivas.

Rather lose Nick, a player who isn't starting and doesn't have much of a future here and who would cost too much to be backup, than a promising player like Gros.

Here is some more info on Warren's status in the league. It' after the part on Beasley's imminent transfer to PSV.

    http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sports_story.asp?intID=3818186

    Here is the relevant part:

"Goalkeeper on the loose: Doug Warren, the former Fremd High School goalkeeper, is now a goalkeeper-for-hire with MLS.

Warren started four games for D.C. United this season, but when coach Peter Nowak fell in love with former developmental league goalkeeper Troy Perkins, Warren found himself as the team's third goalie.

At Warren's request, the team released him and allowed him to look for work elsewhere in MLS, which owns all player contracts.

The league has developed a program where it keeps two goalkeepers handy for teams that might need one.

Warren is in that position now, and he dressed as New England's backup goalkeeper Sunday against the Fire.

Despite not having a real home these days besides his family residence in Hoffman Estates, Warren said his situation is better than with D.C. United.

"I will have a home city where I train full time, and if another team needs me, then I will travel to play with that team,'' Warren said. "Right now, we are just trying to figure things out. I'm excited to get a fresh look somewhere else." "
