Donovan to Spurs

FROM THE DONOVAN TO PORTSMOUTH THREAD:
Chris Bergin (I can see everyone rolling thier eyes) is reporting that the loan deal fell through. Donovan was suppose to fly to England on Friday, but rejected the deal when Portsmouth changed the length of the loan at the last minute. Now the story is Tottenham wants to take him on a full transfer. Guess they're determined to add an American to the roster (must be the trendy thing now). They've even enlisted the service of super German agent Micheal Becker to work out the details with Bayer Leverkusen.

So, who's going to start the "Donovan to Spurs" thread?

P.S. Supposedly, Donovan has heard nothing about a Club America plan to add him for Copa Libertadores or possibly sign him outright for next season.

OK, its done. Why is Donovan flirting with so many cellar dwellers?

Spurs have had an American on their roster for a couple of years now. You might have heard of him. He's a goalkeeper by the name of Kasey Keller. He's a pretty good keeper, too.

And with Postiga, Zamora, Kanoute and Keane already on the team, I don't see a lot of room for another forward. Not that I woudn't like to see LD netting goals for Spurs.....

    Re: Re: Donovan to Spurs

I don't think the original post said that Spurs were determined on adding their first American to their roster, just that they were determined to add an American to their roster. I would be pretty sure, even without knowing him or her, that Mr. Toe has heard of Mr. Keller.

As far as LD goes, I just can't see him going to Spurs (or England for that matter) nor do I see him going to Mexico. My guess (and it is just that) is that he will play this next season in MLS and then go back to BL in Germany.

I would still be surprised to see LD go anywhere this transfer period but what I can't understand is why only English clubs are chasing his services. He speakes spanish and his style of play argueably is a better fit in La Liga. I would like to see some Donovan to Deportivo or Donovan to Barcelona rumors flying around...

Spurs has Keene and Posiga( ok he hasn't been scoring in bunches), and Kanuonte. I can see a loan to cover for the African Nations, but why would LD want to play for the SPurs permenantly?

He said "add" an American. Does that mean he would be the only? I don't think so.

I think this is just about the right fit for Landon, depsite a bad run in recent years, and the fact that I don't like them, I think they are a fairly ambitious club who will look to challenge for Euro spots in the coming years. And while they do have a couple of fine offensive players in Keane and Kanoute, from what I've seen of Postiga, he's failed to impress. I don't think they quite have the resources to stockpile more forwards -- if Tottenham are interested, I would think it would be for him to play.

spurs do however need attacking midfield help and that's probably how most teams overseas view him anyway because his most famous performances (such as WC02 v mexico) have come as a RM... it's where i'd play him on my squad

bluedaddy beat me to it...if Alan Smith can play midfield (albeit in a 4-5-1), then Landon can, too.

Well Spurs are definitely down in the table but are a team that is underperforming and certainly have the talent to challenge for a spot in Europe...a team that could benefit enormously from an impact player (if that is how you see yourself)

As for all the other scorers...not as much competition if they can't start putting the biscuit in the basket

Of course, in my eyes another team that could REALLY use LD is Man City

While all this crazy speculation may be fun, it is about darn time that Donovan go SOMEWHERE. We have been doing this for 2 years now? Longer? And it is almost always the same old.

This time there definately is a feel that something might just happen, but until it actually does I won't hold my breath! :O

Having said that I would love to see Donovan arrive at Spurs and help lift that midfield. Donovan never has and never will be a pure forward. He has always played a better game when coming out of the midfield to attack. They need the help and he can give it.

I would just like to see the guy make a move, period. No matter what the level of MLS right now it is just not comparable to the premier league and is only, maybe, on par with 75% of the english 1st division. If Donovan wants to take his game to the next level then he needs to do this, now.

He has established that he will always be one of the most important national team members we have until his career is over. What he needs to do now is establish, one way or the other, whether or not he has what it takes to be labeled truly world class.

That will never happen as long as he stays home.

One thing I would like to make clear...

While this came from Bergin's site...

It came from his Breaking news and RUMOR section ... not a full news story.

I don't see Landon going anywhere... but this would be interesting.

I just can't see this happening. He has stated repeatedly that he doesn't want to go anywhere, he likes MLS. Personally I am with the group of people that think he should suck it up and go overseas, but if he doesn't want to he isn't going. It will be interesting to see how this BL thing plays out. IF he returns to Germany after this year or not.

Why is that necessary? "Rumor" handles it nicely thank you.

I just don't want people taking this and saying "Bergin is reporting that Spurs signed Donovan".

He calls it a rumor when there isn't enough supporting evidence at the time... lets just leave it at that.

Bergin only posts breaking news in that forum. He has opened a subscription area where the rumors are discussed. He just forgot to change the title of that forum.

That doesn't mean he gets things wrong though. He had the McBride to Blackburn up early, but he was too quick to put it up before Blackburn tried to change the terms at the 11th hour. Sky had written about Fulham's late interest and Bergin had sources that he said that the story was false.

    LD WOW

No really wow, amidst all the haterts and doubters this guy may or may not care. But we do and in some way He must. He cant go to Mexico, that would be suicide, does anyone think thier wont be attemps at a hit on him. mexico hasnt beaten the US in what, 5 matches and hasnt scored in awile. It would be tricky, beckham before the Cup was injured by an "Argie" may or may not have been an attack.

    Mr. Toe,

Please forgive me if I incorrectly infered from your post that you were under the impression Spurs were looking to add their first American to follow a "trend" that they helped start.

    Mr. Love

There, does that make everyone feel better?

    Congratulations!!!!

You have just created the 1,000,000th completely speculative thread about an American going abroad.

Could you at least put a question mark after the title of the thread? As it stands, it is highly misleading.

But also Bergin doesn't report just wild speculation either; he always has something solid to go on.

    A) Tottenham is in 11th place in the EPL so they aren't that close to the bottom. Plus, after a terrible start, they're actually playing better of late so they appear to have righted the ship.

    B) London, despite the rain and cold, is a great place to live. And, even though they talk funny over there, Landon knows the language.

    C) He won't be alone and being lonely was one of the things he hated at Leverkusen. Keller is on the team, McBride and Bocanegra live in London. They can have Yanks night out 3-4 nights a week. (Probably be just Landon and Carlos since Brian and Kasey are married and have kids And poor Carlos would have to hear that endless MLS Cup smack talk!)

And, if the reports are correct - and given all that can happen in a year and the changes at the top at Tottenham, this isn't a lock - they'll be adding his good buddy Convey in August so the two can, hopefully, go from the Olympics to London and kick-ass together at Spurs. More to the point, they can live together off the field or at least hang out together.

    D) It just feels like time. He's conquered MLS, from a team sense, where he's won it all twice, and from an individual sense where he's now the best player. He sees a bunch of other top players in the US pool going abroad and I think he sees the writing on the wall. He's like Buck in Call of the Wild and he feels this urge to test himself against the wilds of Europe.

    E) Turmoil and potential big changes with the Quakes may have him re-considering his desire to stay one more year.

Well I for one tend to believe Bergin. If he says that Spurs have interest in Landon and also he's reporting the Superagent thing as fact....well I'll believe that also. Also he seemed to know that Landon was to fly out on Friday to England. Isn't that a bit too much information to simply toss this aside?

As to going to Tottenham...I like it but I'm gonna check out the Spurs Message Board to how THEY feel about it.

i don't see this happening, but to follow on some other posts here:

    1) yes we had a very poor start, but are unbeaten this year in all competitions and only 7 points out of a champions league spot. (admittedly we're also only 10 points out of last place too... it's a very tight table this year bar the top three spots).

    2) landon would fit in at spurs, they have traditionally been a team that plays with a much more european/attractive style than is typically found in the premier league, the george graham years a notable exception.

    3) we are in desperate need of a creative and defensive midfielder. our current crop are either too old (poyet, anderton) or too injury prone (redknapp). someone who can take a game by the scruff of the neck, rally the troops and change the face of the game (e.g. roy keane, vieria, zidane, etc...)

i don't see landon as that player right now (which is why i think spurs might pass on him), but he could in the right team develop in to that role. a role i don't think, apart from a few players in the history of MLS, exists in this league. he will need to go to a european league to develop this aspect of his game. if he can do that in the next 6 years, america is going to have a very scary national team for the world cup.
