Donovan invited to Valderrama's farewell game (in spanish)

You can translate it with babelfish

Donovan has been invited to former MLS player, Colombian legend Valderrama's farewell game to be played feb 1st in Colombia.

Some players invited include Maradona, Romario, Chilavert, Zamorano, Aguinaga, Cantona.

Telemundo showed Zamorano's farewell so they might show Valderramas.

That's a bit of an honor I'd guess. Those aren't pikers he's been asked to play with.

Probably doesn't hurt that he speaks Spanish.

What's the connection to Cantona? Did Carlos play in the EPL? Did Cantona play in a World Cup or Internationally? I can see the reasons for the others being invited, but Cantona represents France?

IIRC, Cantona did play in a Maradona's testimonia in Buenos Aires, I think at Boca Juniors' stadium, a few years ago.

Valderrama's people are probably just carrying on with some sort of suggestion or pattern there, I am guessing.

And yes, quite an honour for Landon.

That's one hell of an elite list of who's-who of recent legends there.

Well El Pibe did play in France so that might be your reason.

I love these translations. You probably get more laughs than coherent information from them. I guess this (programmatic translation) is a hard problem to solve because seems like no one's been able to do a good job with it yet.

Here are some of my favorites from this one.

"Until they are not here and we do not see them lower of the airplane is not possible to be ratified ", González commented..."

"He added that the Paraguayan doorman Jose Luis Chilavert..."

    Portrero (goalkeeper) translates to "doorman".

"Stars as the French Eric Cantona already assured their presence, said González, who added that other soccer players as the Argentinean Diego Arming Maradona and the Brazilian Romario said that if would attend, although she is not safe his presence."

I tried using Google to translate the ESTO article yesterday, and it translates Chivas to "the Kids". So Chivas USA became "the Kids USA", etc.

Kinda ironic that Donovan would be invited considering Valderrama was sent off for his two-footed, studs-up tackle on Donovan a couple of years ago

I was thinking the same thing. Not sure how much El Pibe likes Landon.

Here's a more readable article about it:

That's right, I had forgotten about that.

But I can't remember which club (and I can't look it up, now that all my old MLS media guides are packed away, since we're starting our moving process in a couple of hours).

Any trivia buffs know which club had both Eric Cantona and Carlos Valderrama on their list?

I believe it was Montpellier during the 1989-90 season. Cantona was on loan from Olympique Marseille. They won the French Cup that year and also made the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup.

I dare say Landon will miss it as Olympic qualifiers start Feb. 2 in Mexico. Though, obviously, it was still an honor to be invited.

El Pibe said that Steve Ralston and Marco Etcheverry were also invited to play.
