You're sadly correct. Whenever there's something worthwhile about the US that's overshadowing him and his ego, he has to chime in with a response that sets him up that he's a genius to his scary clueless supporters. If the US fails, he's going to take credit for it and say, "yep that's what happens when you tarnish the American flag ladies..." and if they win, he'll be like "Well, I already said they were the best right?"
Q: Mr. President, on your push to decriminalize homosexuality, are you doing that? In over half of all States in America, LGBT people, including Pinoe and Ali, can be fired for being gay and can be denied housing for simply being gay. Pinoe is a second class citizen in her country, largely due to GOP politicians. The Equality Act, which was passed a few weeks ago by House Democrats would change these rules on a federal level to allow LGBT the same protections as the rest of us. All but 8 GOP politicians voted against this and the White House has publicly stated it is against the Equality Act . This is a great platform for patriots like Ali, Pinoe, Alex and teammates to call out necessary changes that need to be made in America until all are equally protected.
Rapinoe has been joined by Alex Morgan and Ali Krieger in refusal to go to the White House. I'm sure that most of the team members will join them in boycotting any invitation by Donald Trump. Given that Trump has no respect for anyone, except dictators he has met, I have no sympathy for his point of view.
I love how this idiot does this two days before the matchup with France. He probably hopes they lose so he can prove he is right and they were wrong.
I really, Really, REALLY hope this is true and that the team does show the support for their captain you predict. So far I have not seen any "official" indication of additional support for Megan's position among the rest of the team but I am not exactly tightly tuned in to the news and I do not use social media so it would be very easy for me to miss things like this. Except for official and unavoidable functions I wish all people that are at all against Trump's self aggrandizing would not show p to any functions that Trump is at and walk out if he shows unannounced. I hope we (The US) survive the next year and a half and that we prove smart enough to show up to the polls in droves to vote him out. I want the only question to remaining to be, "Will Trump honor the process when he loses?" Except for the minimum to keep the government functioning the House should refuse to even consider any laws or measures he presents. He has shown that he is very able to take good laws and twist them to his desires so just, as much as possible, give him nothing to work with. If all that happens our only worry will be: does he start a war? Maybe it would not be a good thing for the US to beat France as Trump might use it as an excuse to go to war with France. Of course it could be just as much a trigger if the US loses as then Trump could claim it was a European plot and go to war over that. Before anyone says that can't happen remember there has been war in the past triggered by a soccer match. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_War
Pinoe, Ali, the entire WNT should all @trump asking the Senate to vote and Trump to sign the Equality Act into law now. If Trump does this, tell him maybe they will visit the HW and they will even bring the McDonalds. They have the megaphone, use it. Inform American's exactly how they are second class, due to GOP politics, yet still winning WC's for this country.
Go figure, 2 narcissistic, attention-seeking idiots go head-to-head on social media. Who would have guessed? They are perfect for each other in that sense. I honestly wish we could enjoy this tournament without all the bitchy distractions (womens' salaries and attempts to drag the USMNT into things, any political crap, and negative attention due to Rapinoe being a lightning rod for drama.)
Actually it is just solid basic sociopathy it is nothing more complex that that. In the case I believe that Trump manifests most of the bad sides of being a sociopath while remaining a bit short of the serial killer stage. (See Hannibal Lecter or the real life Alfredo Ballí Treviño) But Trump still has time and his position as president gives him the chance to become one of the most prolific ever. BTW: Being a sociopath in politics is not always a bad thing. We have had several great leaders that were sociopaths in many of their words and actions. Like: Ben Franklin George Patton Abraham Lincoln John Kennedy (and many of the rest of that family) George Washington And many many others. The fact is that sociopaths can make good leaders if they can see that their self interest is best served by really doing the best job they can. Unfortunately Trump cannot see that and his leadership is very flawed. Not to mention his choice to wear Garfield on his head.
Mostly, that is correct. I think is was Ben Franklin (one of the sociopaths I mentioned) that said, "Anyone that offers themselves for public office automatically disqualifies themselves."
But when else would they get this much attention? As timing is everything, when else would they get broader awareness and discussion of these "distractions"?
Yeah I thought of him but Ben, I think, never held elected office and so it seemed appropriate. Disclaimer: My Last American history class was almost 50 year ago so I might be confusing memories.
I get the argument, I just don’t agree with it. Time and place, and all that. That is just my take on it. There comes a point where it carries over into lack of class, and it runs the risk of building more resentment than helping their cause..
A soccer match will never be as important as their fight for equality or confronting an administration who is systematically taking away their rights. "Time and place" is important. Look at the '68 Olympics. Fists were raised and the US press ostracized our black athletes and the Olympic committee tried to kick out the entire USA track team. The statement was important and powerful and needed. I don't think you "get the argument" at all.
Likening a group that is among the most privileged group of human beings on earth to the Civil Rights struggle of the '60s is...pretty amazing, actually. Not in the good way.
As stated before, in over half of US states you can be fired and denied housing for simply being gay. Pinoe may have a million in the bank, but when it comes to equal rights, she's still a second class citizen in her own country. Second, The LGBT community is universally one of the most persecuted groups in history. In 80 countries around the world it is illegal to be gay today, in 2019. In 10 countries the punish is death. By speaking up on a world stage, to an administration who is systematically stripping LGBT rights, this sends a strong message for others across the globe. It's actually very important. Following?
