Damn... The French league is really The consistent mediocrity of the French league will always surprise me
I think that there was good dynamics in the 90s but the 'Bosman ruling' broke that (+ French clubs are more controlled economically so they can get relegated if they have too much debts). + yeah, agreed, they suck at many things. Even though it is not the same context, this PSG has lessons to take from the 90's C+ PSG btw. Now I'll make the summary for the French clubs (last-4 only) : It starts with Stade de Reims, E1 runner-up 1956 and 1959. 1964 : Semi-finalist of the E2, Lyon. 1975 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Saint-Etienne. 1976 : Runner-up of the E1, Saint-Etienne. 1978 : Runer-up of the E3, Bastia. 1980 : Semi-finalist of the E2, Nantes. 1981 : Semi-finalist of the E3, Sochaux. 1985 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Bordeaux. 1987 : Semi-finalist of the E2, Bordeaux. 1988 : Semi-finalist of the E2, Marseille. 1990 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Marseille + Semi-finalist of the E2, Monaco. 1991 : Runner-up of the E1, Marseille. 1992 : Runner-up of the E2, Monaco. 1993 : Winner of the E1, Marseille + Semi-finalists of the E3, Paris SG and Auxerre. 1994 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Monaco + Semi-finalist of the E2, Paris SG. 1995 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Paris SG. 1996 : Winner of the E2, Paris SG + Runner-up of the E3, Bordeaux + Semi-finalist of the E1, Nantes. 1997 : Runner-up of the E2, Paris SG + Semi-finalist of the E3, Monaco. 1998 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Monaco. 1999 : Runner-up of the E3, Marseille. 2000 : Semi-finalist of the E3, Lens. 2004 : Runner-up of the E1, Monaco + Runner-up of the E3, Marseille. 2010 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Lyon. 2017 : Semi-finalist of the E1, Monaco + Semi-finalist of the E3, Lyon. 2018 : Runner-up of the E3, Marseille. Interestingly (among other things for sure), the French clubs had decent results prior to the last World Cup. That being, there was no L1 players on the World champion starting XI - apart from Mbappé.
