And Columbus' Supporters' Shield this year assures us another year where we have no winner of the mythical domestic treble/triple.
I don't think this has any value, just interesting that 2001 was the only year that 1 team did not win 2 of the 3. Of course 2004 could be the same situation.
What up? What about the CONCACAF Champs Cup? Or how about the Inter-American Cup? And if you count all championships, the Metrostars won La Manga Cup during the 04' offseason, so the only teams without a championship are the Revolution and Rapids.
Reread my post, concacaf champs cup and interamerican cup are domestic cups, its just that only two teams have won the ccc, and one team has won the interamerican. And if you read further I stated if you want to count all championships, then you are forgetting the Metros, but you obviously jumped the gun.
Really? The CCC and I-A Cup are/were events held between club teams from different countries. The thread starter isn't counting titles won by American teams - he's counting trophies won in U.S. competitions - MLS Cup, Sup. Shield, Open Cup.
Considering Bethlehem Steel won it 4 times from 1915-1919, and Ukrainian Nationals won it 4 times from 1960-1966, I'd say there's a good chance there are many 4 time champions. Maybe even the Fall River, Mass team who won it 4 times in 8 years could have had one or two guys that played on all the championship teams.
Only four winners of the Shield have also won the MLS Cup in the same year, so regular season sucess doesn't seem to correlate especially strongly with playoff success. That doesn't augur particularly well for Columbus this year. perc
Except that 12 of the previous 16 MLS Cup finalists won their division that year, and I would think winning a division title makes for a successful regular season, and making the final can be construed as a successful playoff run.
It looks to be simply average actually. I went back and looked at the NBA and NHL over the past eight years and found this: NBA (year/champion/best record) 2003-2004 - Detroit/Indiana 2002-2003 - San Antonio/San Antonio and Dallas 2001-2002 - Los Angeles Lakers/Sacramento 2000-2001 - Los Angeles Lakers/San Antonio 1999-2000 - Los Angeles Lakers/Los Angeles Lakers 1998-1999 - San Antonio/San Antonio and Utah 1997-1998 - Chicago/Chicago and Utah 1996-1997 - Chicago/Chicago NHL (year/champion/most points) 2004 - Tampa/Detroit 2003 - New Jersey/Detroit 2002 - Detroit/Detroit 2001 - Colorado/Colorado 2000 - New Jersey/St. Louis 1999 - Dallas/Dallas 1998 - Detroit/Dallas 1997 - Detroit/Colorado That's five of eight over that period in the NBA and and three of eight in the NHL. Admittedly these are very small samples. But it suggests the MLS run fairly well in line with the other leagues in this regard. perc
Good stuff. Richie Williams should get a shout out, too. He has seven. Three MLS Cups (96, 97, 99), two Shields (97, 99) and two Open Cups (95, 96). The catch here is that he won his first Open Cup the year before MLS started as a member of the Richmond Kickers. Also on that team was Brian Kamler, but he's "only" won five trophies - two MLS Cups (96-97), one Shield (97), and two Open Cups (95-96) and there are several players with at least five so that shouldn't get too much attention.
Yes, but except for 2001 a team has won 2 trophies in each year. That bodes well for KC and Columbus.
That's not true... the did win the Eastern Conference regular season championship one year, were the Men of La Manga this past offseason and got the aforementioned partcipation ribbon. Oh yeah, I almost forgot... the won the Atlantic Cup last season too. Sachin
