Thanks for sharing...very sorry to hear the news.

My favorite referee. Post-Collina, I don't think any other referee was more respected by the players and coaches.

This sucks. Without question one of the elite referees of this generation. I hope he will be able to recover so he can end his career on his terms instead of this being his final match. He deserves a lot better than this if it is the end for him.

Technically this is AFC champions league. Ronaldo got a penalty awarded to him but then told the ref it wasn’t a penalty

What do you guys do if this situation arises? Drop ball in the box? Make them take the penalty but they can just deliberately miss?

If you call a penalty, they need to take it.
But wtf, Ronaldo dives and then gets a conscious?

I'm assuming there is VAR in this competition? Kind of weird that we are still kind of asking this question.

He knows that if the penalty is called, the VAR would send him to the monitor and, then, the referee can book him for simulation.

He's doing this to avoid a simulation caution. He knows it's gonna go to VAR.

If the referee says, "no penalty" on the field he gets away with not earning a deserved caution for simulation.

By the way, you do need to listen to the attacker if he says "no penalty there."

Wow, Skomina just a few years ago and now Brych too, two legendary referees of their generation with the same injury at the end of their careers. Very sad news.

I've been watching on YouTube the RFEF's highlights of the second round of the Copa del Rey. Today Arandina (fourth division) upset Cádiz (first division). The field was a bit wet, but I guess they decided it was not unplayable. Plus, everything's on a very tight schedule--Cádiz has a league game on Sunday, for example--so the show must go on. There's also a handball/not handball in the penalty area decision from 2:09.

Not just fix. Remember the argument that it would prevent the most egregious cases of off-the-ball VC because no player in their right mind would be silly enough to engage in such behavior with VAR sure to catch them?

Wild few minutes on this Serie A match in the dying embers. Watch on Paramount+ starting from the 87th minute.

Very interesting situation for Sozza in Serie A. Foul happens outside the FoP and gives a DFK near touch line. More back and forth between both players.

Paramount+ left a lot out in terms of Sozza and team dealing with an incensed team figuring out the restart. The whole ordeal took 3 minutes. Surprised only one yellow came out. 1 red to a substitute.

Also three reds in the Roma v Fiorentina match.

Drop ball due to inadvertent whistle (making certain it goes to the team in possession. Caution for misconduct. You simply can't call a foul for activity that clearly takes place off of FoP.

    I know.

Foul-like movement. Or embellishment. Or both. Should have clarified. :)

    That's kindly of you.

Because even if there had never been relevant Law changes (a long time ago), he would still be completely wrong. In the old days, if misconduct occurred off the field of play by a player, Law 5 considerations still applied. If there was no advantage, you stopped play to issue the card. The restart would just be an IFK.

Dropped ball for an "inadvertant whistle." My word.

So Steaua had this great goal not given for foul

At 1:40 minute there is the VAR replay.

All the discussion in Romania is of course biased. I too am of course biased but I want to hear outside opinions

Of course a defender can legally challenge for a ball while it's bouncing in the air or an attacker is juggling it. You just can't do so carelessly or recklessly, or in a way that's considered playing in a dangerous manner. Based on the positioning of the Cagliari defenders, the risk of potentially conceding a penalty was too great for them to dive in with a speculative chance of getting the ball.

A Cagliari defender could have tried to head the ball away when Oshimen was trying to control the ball when his back was to goal. A defender could have poked the ball away with their toe too when the ball was being controlled from the thighs to feet. Nobody was close enough or had the position to do so. This all happened super fast. Oshimen brought the ball under control and turned very quickly.
