This image says it all: https://ibb.co/cQfBNMw 100% scoring opportunity? Nah… Maybe Bergwijn getting away with a RC in the Classico was still on top of their minds. Level of refereeing in Eredivisie is quite worrying tbh. The rumor is that referee boss (Van Egmond) has been sick at home for some time now. Makkelie needs more competition to improve his own level; he’s not challenged enough by Gozubuyuk. Gozubuyuk is doing okay-ish domestically, he improved since he has Zeinstra on his side, but still he’s very dependent on VAR. I can already recall two domestic games where he had 2 OFR’s in both games. In UEFA games he never convinced… A poor and hesitating referee. Lindhout made good progress, but since that UEFA kids tournament last summer he has stagnated (or even relapsed). Poor lad is called Blindhout on socials. Higler doesn't have it. We should hope for a better generation. Marc Nagtegaal is the most promising imho. He’s a policeman in daily life and it shows. He’s good at making a connection with players, which is a quality that Kooij and Van der Eijk don’t have.
Indeed. Last mid week match round saw quite alot refs getting a 5 out of 10 rating by Voetbal International. Some even got a disturbing low 4 rating this month. The quality watchers of the Refs really should have a gathering and talk about it.

There it is: https://www.knvb.nl/nieuws/scheidsr...9085/dick-van-egmond-legt-taken-bij-knvb-neer That might explain the decreased level of referees and lack of uniformity.
Well, a first in Italy. Internazional vs Torino, the match that could seal the title for Inter, is being reffed by an all women team!
All the best to them. Female refereeing must be a point of attention as well, in our small country. There is a big gap compared to other European countries. The fact that there isn’t a female referee in the KKD... that’s odd.
Names to keep an eye on: https://www.knvb.nl/nieuws/assist-s.../63567/shona-shukrula-scheidsrechter-zijn-een Well, that's a combo. Being both a prosecuter and a referee. https://www.knvb.nl/nieuws/scheidsr...748/extra-tijd-franca-overtoom-altijd-uniform
Uh inter already clinched the title. They did it last week against Milan. This is a friendly basically now.
Dutch referee Nijhuis gave this week for the first time in 3 (three!!) years a red card to Excelsior player Horemans, and it gets revoked by the referee committee. So his red card free run continues. Last time he handed a red card was May 13th 2021, but that was a double whammy. Two red cards in the FC Emmen-Heerenveen for Lasse Schöne and Syb van Ottele. https://www.ad.nl/nederlands-voetba...od-uit-maar-kaart-wordt-geseponeerd~ab9d7c4d/
For 3rd season in a row, Former FIFA referee Mario van der Ende has rated the performances of referees and the utilization of VARs in the Eredivisie. He’s doing that in a weekly Radio item and is obviously an old school law enforcer. All weekly ratings and standings can be found here: https://allsportsradio.nl/artikelen/tag/3384 At first I didn’t like the item, because of the negative tone of voice - he came across as a vindictive person (there was a conflict between him and some referees when he worked at KNVB...). However, he has his changed his tone recently, has good criticisms and shares nice anecdotes about the old days. I approve!
@Orangebarista what the heck is this https://www.vi.nl/nieuws/scheidsrechter-levenslang-geschorst-na-feestvieren-met-winnende-team
On its own, partying with the winning team is crazy. But after sending off 3 opposing players and adding 15 minutes to enable the winning goal? Insane.
That is shocking indeed and a more than deserved punishment. It was a game in what they call 4th class which is 7th league in NL.
Australia semifinal second leg, couple major decisions in the seciond half of this video: https://aleagues.com.au/videos/id/c...-2023-24-semi-final-second-leg/6353172653112/ Both seem quite obviously correct. The second one--offside for interfering with an opponent, thereby preventing him from stopping the ball from going over the goal line in time--is not one you see every day.
https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/1575...ben-gestemd-maakt-deze-gouden-kaart-specialer Danny Makkelie was voted as best Dutch referee of the season by former internationals. Here you can see how the former internationals have voted: https://ibb.co/R6WnXRR Personally, I don't think the gap between Makkelie and Gözübüyük was “as big as it used to be” in Eredivisie. However, in international competitions the gap between Makkelie and Gözübüyük is still huge. And that is a concern for sure. In a performance climate, it is always good to be challenged to raise your own bar. Between 2019-2021, Kuipers and Makkelie pushed each other to a top level, reaching European finals. Makkelie was definitely good this season, he had a ‘quiet’ international season and I’m glad he works with a different VAR now. This is a solid base to build upon. In my opinion, Makkelie (and his team) can still improve their level. No time for slackening. He has the talent and potential to be Top-3 in the world. I hope he’s still motivated to get everything out of his talent.
Shona Shukrula promoted and will be the first female referee in Dutch professional football league: https://www.knvb.nl/nieuws/scheidsr...a-trots-op-promotie-dit-een-droom-die-uitkomt Well deserved. By now means this is a PR- or gender equality decision. She followed a long path and from what I’ve seen, she is a very good and promising referee. Combining the officiating with her job as a prosecutor.

Last week I enjoyed the "spicy" play-offs of the Eredivisie (NL), for promotion/relegation and a ticket for the preliminary round of the UEFA Conference League. Playoffs are seen as unfair and loathed by many people (the #9 has won a European ticket ahead of #6) however it is certainly high-quality entertainment. Also regarding refereeing decisions/errors. Lots of red cards, KMI's and unfortunately temporary strikes due to supporter violence. Greek scenes! But I also noticed that in play-offs, the good referees distinguish themselves from the inferior ones. Kudos to Makkelie and his assistents - I know I’ve often criticized him - but he delivered a very high level in the semi-final (Utrecht-Sparta). He is always good when the pressure is on and makes refereeing look so simple. The match developed into a true football fight, but Makkelie never lost the control or acceptance. Also compliments to Lindhout yesterday (conference league play-offs final); a bizarre evening marred by supporters with fireworks in the stands. The assistant referee was bowled after a correct offside decision. Lindhout remained calm for 120+ minutes and - among other things - issued a correct RC. Next Tuesday and Sunday, the finals for promotion/relegation are played. According to a source on X, they will be officiated by Higler and Makkelie. Good choice. However, that means Gözübüyük is completely missing in the play-offs games. He has only refereed 2 domestic games after the EURO squad was released. Perhaps he needs a break, to set new goals… But thats pure speculating. It must have been a big disappointment for sure.
Indeed the play-off matches, given the stakes within a short run of matches, test the refs to the limit.
Yes, great challenge for referees. In Eredivisie, Allard Lindhout had a card average of ~2.4 YC’s per match which is extremely low. Comparable to Nijhuis. Yesterday, Lindhout was really tested and had to use his cards, which was nice to watch. For the record, Gozubuyuk had the highest YC average this season (3.9 per match) which is quite high for an Elite referee. He chose a stricter line than Makkelie, who scored ~3,3 YC’s on average. I also noticed that those play-off games are less clinical than UEFA games where they tend to keep the camera away from the negative moments (people throwing fireworks or pitch invasions). ESPN showed all the rough footage..
