Currently, CAF gets 5 slots (+ host SA) and CONMEBOL gets 4.5 slots

CONMEBOL: went 10-4-1 (W-D-L) in group play
CAF (including SA) went 3-5-10 in group play

All 5 CONMEBOL advance to the Round of 16.
    Only one CAF advanced.

Does CONMEBOL gain a half spot at CAF's expense for 2014?

Remember, that would mean 5 + host Brazil.

    Thoughts?

I suspect they will give a .5 slot to CONMEBOL. But it all depends on how Ghana does. If they beat uruguay, they will keep their slots probably.

I think Euro should lose a berth or two to be honest. I think Ecuador and Costa Rica would have done fairly well in this WC and it is a shame they have been left out. I'd like to see CONMEBOL get 5 plus Brazil in 2014.

UEFA has one bad WC and suddenly it's time to cut slots? LOL. Maybe they can start by letting the legit qualifying teams actual play in the world cup instead of cheating them out of their slot.

UEFA usually sends about half its qualifiers through. Sounds like the have the perfect amount of slots CONMEBOL does a little better at 60%, but if you gave them a whole slot over the last 3-4 worldcups they would probably drop down to 40% because the talent their often drops off steeply after Argentina and Brazil. But a half slot might be perfect. As long as they take it from CAF.

Why not? Even the 5th Conmebol qualifier won their group and advanced to the QF. There's probably not much difference in talent between Uruguay and 6th place Ecuador and 7th Colombia (all separated by just 1 point after 18 qualifying games). They deserve at least half more spot, IMO.

I don't think so .... I suspect that CAF will press to keep its current 6 slots (or at least 5.5) and they will go away with it.

Africa is simply too important from an electoral point of view: 50+ votes is a lot of votes in the FIFA, even if most of them come from (literally) non existant countries with zero soccer power.

In the case of CONMEBOL you have huge quality but few votes .... I agree that Ecuador, or Colombia are way better than the crappy african teams (heh, even Peru or Venezuela could be better) , but I don't think CONMEBOL will get more slots .... to put it bluntly: how can you justify granting 6 slots (including host) for a continent with just 10 countries?

My impression is that for 2014 CONMEBOL will get 5 slots... including host and for 2018 will go back to the usual 4.5 slots, that in real terms are 5 slots :).

So... in my opinion what will happen for 2014 will be that the CAF gets 5.5 slots while Europe gets 12.5 slots; thus an european team and an african team will fight for the last slot available

Everybody else stays more on less the same.

I was thinking that they give some of the "lesser soccer areas" of the world more then they deserve in the hopes that more countries will say "Hey, maybe we have a shot at getting one of those" and actually dump some cassh into the program. Soccer gets bigger, FIFA gets a fatter wallet, etc.

And let's face it. Every WC the best teams quallify-- the only ones able to win the thing. They could giveUEFA like 4 slots and CONEMBOL 2 slots and the rest really don't matter.

I think CAF and CONCACAF should lose half a spot each and give it to CONMEBOL. AFC should lose half a spot also and give it to CONMEBOL but AFC get it back from OFC when OFC winner joins AFC at final stage of qualifying.

    That would mean:
    CAF - 4.5
    CONCACAF - 3
    AFC - 4.5
    CONMEBOL - 6
    UEFA - 13
    Host - 1

CAF does not have six spots but five, it is just because the WC is held in South Africa that there are 6 african teams.

It didn't stop the AFC retaining their allocation after 2002.

What did CONCACAF do to lose a spot?

Check the records of the teams other than Mexico and USA at the last two tournaments. 3 goals and 2 points from 9 games is not pretty reading - 2 of the teams failed to even score.

I Know ..... what I mean is that probably the CAF doesn't want to go back to its regular 5 slots allocation for 2014, and, therefore, will try to make the temporary 6 slots allocation a permanent one

And I suspect that with 50+ votes in the FIFA they will get away with it

That is the reason I am crossing my fingers so Uruguay obliterates Ghana, no no african team is left

You people are really very stupid and wasting your time. FIFA has already said that CAF will not lose any spots. DID AFC lose any spots for sending 0 of 4 teams through in 2006 and despite sending teams every WC that gets thrashed 7-0, or 4-0, or 6-0. When was the last time CAF sent a team that bad to the WC. Get some objectivity please.

However.... probably it would be nice if south america could send 6 teams to the next world cup ,+ the host, Brazil..... I really think this is going to happen..... for these two reasons:
1- south american teams had a great 2010 world cup..

2- as you have seen at this world cup, in many games there have been lots of empty seats, and this should not surprise us, the host was eliminated in the first round, and most of the other african teams were also eliminated in the first round as well , now, I don't know how many fans from Nigeria or Cameroon traveled to South africa, but trust me, in next world cup In Brazil, a lot a lot of fans from other south american nations will travel to Brazil, also in Brazil , south american teams will have even a fantastic performance, that would mean stadiums with not empty seats.

I wonder, though... Being that there are only 10 members in CONMEBOL, would FIFA really want to allow more than half of an entire confederation into the World Cup? Eventually the qualification process starts to look like the MLS regular season.

why even bother with a qualification, just grant all 10 conembol teams automatic berths.

I think Costa Rica (CONCACAF #4) would have done okay at this tournament. They narrowly lost to a tough Uruguayan side. Honduras was beset by injuries.

Exactly. Had Alvaro Saborio not missed a sitter, Uruguay wouldn't be in South Africa.

On Topic: I don't think CAF should lose a spot to CONMEBOL. There are far more countries in Africa than in South America. It is, after all, the world cup.

if people think the UEFA teams are doing badly this time, wait til 2014. the stadiums will be full of argentine, uruguayans, paraguayans, etc.

the fan support given to argentina, 25,000 argentines were in soccer city yesterday, will probably double

the chilean fans were EPIC this World Cup. I could hear them singing esta noche tenemos que ganar over those damn vuvuzelas every match

i am loving this world cup, but i cannot wait to see the european sides exposed more in south america where it will be harder

i think a fair thing to do would be to have UEFA teams do a play off against other federations.

i doubt that the majority of UEFA play off teams would be able to qualify out of their home continent
    greece vs. uruguay
    slovenia vs. ecuador
    france vs. colombia
    ukraine vs. costa rica
    ireland vs. bahrain

we could possibly do a little more, but doing something like that would help do away with all the dead weight UEFA brings to the world cup every time.
