i sent this message to the Celtic boards in hope for some good answers..i asked who does CEltic get along with in england..do CEltic fans support liverpool, arsenal, or man. u in england?...who does arsenal fans support as there second team in scotland or there "brother " team in scotland...just read the posting in the celtic boards if u cant understand my dumbass self...thanks
I stumbled in here through the bigsoccer front page (honest!) but I think I can help you. Spurs seem to have a link with Rangers so i would assume Arsenal are somewhat linked to Celtic. Also I believe originally Arsenal had mostly Scottish and Irish supporters. A lot of it is stupidity though, a few Celtic fools (and I am a Celtic fan) decided to take up the cause of the Palestinians because they thought they were oppressed like the Irish, thus Rangers took up the Israeli cause and forged a link with Spurs. I would assume that turned a few Arsenal supporters to Celtic.
As far as I'm concerned, what team? Where do they play? Unless someone is a Scot or lives (lived) in Scotland, why would they follow either Celtic or Rangers? This is one of the mysteries of football that I'll never understand - how did Celtic and Rangers become the "second" team for so many people? So, I believe the answer is - "There are no formal or serious ties between Arsenal and either of the Old Firm clubs." However, there are personal ties between some Arsenal fans and those clubs up north...
First off I was unaware of the link between Spurs and Rangers. Second I remember a religious connection in the early 1900s to Arsenal but had no idea of a its connection to Celtic. So for me I will take the first point and run with it. I believe you will find that most of us dont follow Scottish football. Unfortunately it is solely between two teams and has become uninteresting. Those of us with no Scots connection but roots in England tend to pay little attention.(That said, I still watch every game on FSW and fancy myself a Kilmarnock fan as the only person Ive ever met from Scotland grew up there.)
Guess which finger I'm holdoing up right now? And to answer the guys question: Rangers. Mighty, mighty Rangers. GRFC till I die. For reasons of lineal consanguinal familial kinship* and past long term residential connections to the lovely land of Alba. *The Anthropologist speaks! p.s. Believe!!!
The comments made by "Decent Guy" are more or less pretty accurate, although it does also depend upon whether you are Protestant or Catholic. Personally, my "Scottish team" is Hibernian. I believe that's due to the fact that I have always liked the colour green (second to red though), but also when T.V.'s were black and white, (I'm showing my age!), that the Hibernian kit looked very much like Arsenal! The're the first result I look for in Scotland anyway. I've never really been bothered by the "Old Firm" thing. It's all second to Arsenal (and England) anyway!
There are many ties between Celtic and Liverpool supporters. So if I were to pick one team that many Celtic fans, but not all, like best in England it would be Liverpool. Not me though, I prefer Leeds.
Sorry to blast everyone, however, you have all showed your ignorance of Arsenal! Everyone knows that gunners fans are celtic fans dating back before Charlie Nicholas signed for the gunners, (I hear a big collective - who) if you thought Theirry was idiolized, you should have heard the north bank chant charley charley, charley charley! we have played friendlies and testimoniels against Celtic over the years and have always respected their fans for being true fans.
Historically North London was dominated by Irish and Jewish communities. The Celtic link with Liverpool, Manchester and North London is an Irish Catholic one. I don't know how far back this goes, but during the 70's Arsenal, ManUre and the Pool all had an Irish contingent in their squads. It's true about the friendlies with Celtic and Charley Nicholas was the darling of the North Bank, but, he only fleetingly produced the kind of football that made him a legend at Park Head. Both in style, looks and off-pitch habits he seemed to have come to London to do an impersonation of George Best; I.E drink the place dry! I think supporting teams in more than one country is quite a new Phenomena. I remember coming across the odd St Etienne or Ajax fan, during periods when these teams were doing well in European competitions, or were home to world renowned players like Johann Cruyff. Bottom line, come 4.45pm on a Saturday afternoon our interest in teleprinter results from Scotland never went further than being bemused by some of the team names; Partick Thistle, Queen of the South, Hamilton Academicals.... If we even knew that an Old Firm game was on, we couldn't care less about the result! Still don't really, it's hard to take a 10 club league seriously?
In Scotland, Celtic fans only support Celtic whilst Rangers fans would follow sides from other Countries. In London, many Chelsea fans support Rangers.
"Desigol" scores another few points concerning Celtic and Rangers. Celtic certainly don't follow anyother team in England, although their links with Arsenal are pretty good. Numerous "testimonal" games have been played with them. Paul Davis, Tony Adams' second one, plus David O'Leary's, who's brother Pierce played for Celtic. The situation between Celtic and Rangers is unique to almost any other region in the world, particularly (unfortunately through religion). For years Rangers would never sign a Catholic player, and Celtic supporters display the Irish tricolour at their games, whereas, from memory, Rangers is about the only team in Scotland that I have ever seen display the Union flag (of Great Britain). That, from me, is enough on this subject, and full attention reverts back to the best club in Great Britain: "ARSENAL".
What are you kidding? The guy asked a question and all you had to say was neither. Instead you added "************ the rest" like Arsenal was your only team (which it apparently isn't) and it's impossible to like more than one team even though you do it yourself.
Two teams is enough for me. My dear hometown Revs, and the champions, Arsenal. One in the summer, one in the winter. I can't spend time following any other clubs, I guess I don't have the attention span for it. Though I will point out another bolt in the Celtic connection by mentioning the fact that Ian Wright played for them before he retired...
