Does anyone remember seeing Robert Gibbs play at NC State?

This for the posters who are a little older.

Apparently Robert Gibbs, the new White House spokersperson for Barack Obama, played three seasons of college soccer at NC State.

Media reports, and a look at State's media guide on-line, say he played for the Pack from 90-92 under Bob Gibbs.

He was apparently the back-up GK as the starter two of those years was David Allred (90-91), who holds the programs record for lowest GAA. Someone named Steve Moore was the starter in 92.

Still, he was part of some very good teams as 90-92 was the nadir for State men's soccer as those three years they went a combined 43-12-8, won the 1990 ACC Tournament and made the Final Four a few weeks later and in 91 and 92 they were second in the ACC regular season and made the NCAA QFs in 91 and the Sweet 16 in 92.

Besides Allred and Moore, Gibbs notable (from a soccer perspective) teammates included Roy Lassiter, Henry Gutierrez, Dario Brose, Scott Schweitzer, Tom Tanner and former Wizards GM Curt Johnson.

I followed college soccer then but not as closely as I do now and it was a little harder to get info back then. But, I have no memory of seeing Gibbs play and was curious if anyone here has and can comment on what type of 'keeper he was.

Here's a link from State's site (ironically called GoPack.com since a leading Republican fundraising site is GOPac.com ;)) talking about Gibbs, with a link to a NY Times article that has some quotes from Crazy George.

Did NC state get repeatedly shelled during those days? That could explain the deer-in-headlights look.

    Now that's comedy.

Of course, as the great philosopher Homer Simpson said, it's funny because it's true. Sadly.

    Early 90's....older....that's funny...

I saw an article about that....makes me want to return my NCSU letters from the '70s (now THATS old!) .... (not that BO's main opponent would be doing any better right now - I'm a dedicated 3rd party voter)

Anyway, interesting tidbit, SM....maybe something good for soccer will come out of this...of course, GHWB was captain of his prep school soccer team, right?

    have fun,

I think nadir is the opposite of what you meant. Zenith, perhaps?
