Just a thought...Do you think MLS will ever scrap any of its Americanized team names and go more traditional?...I know that by posting this thread, I'm not only beating a dead horse, but reviving him again only to beat him mercilessly once more until my arms become numb. I just think it's such a common topic because those of us who actually give a crap about MLS want to see it succeed. I don't buy the argument that "Americans" won't understand more traditional names, because those random Americans who don't understand it aren't going to be the ones who go to games, watch on television, or buy merchandise anyway. MLS needs to attract the millions of soccer fans already here...The ones who fill the Rose Bowl to capacity when the US plays Mexico, or the people who sold out stadiums all over the place during Man U's US tour. The league has alienated all those people and forced them to say "MLS is goofy, Kansas City Wizards? Isn't that a WNBA team?" Anywho...Like I said, I know I'm going to get handed my own arse on a platter for posting this thread, but oh well...I think it would be interesting to get some suggestions for changes to current team names. Run with it! BTW...I'm not actually a newbie, I just changed my sign in, so don't patronize me...You patronizical bastards (Yes, I know it's not a real word.)
OK then, I'll start Kansas City- Simply "K City" Galaxy- "S.C. Alliance" S.C. standing for so cal. Fire- "Brigade S.C." Burn - "Republic" (As in Republic of Texas) Earthquakes-- "Frisco S.C.", or just "San Jose" What do you think?
Original Wow...I'm getting ripped a new one for this post...What a surprise! If I only could have predicted this, I would have saved myself so much embarrasment...If only I would have prefaced the post with some sort of disclaimer, I could have avoided some of the smartass comments! That's OK, This is what I expected...Smart-assed bastards! Fine...from now on I'll leave the lame posts to the rest of you, and I'll bring the condescending responses. The least you could do is tell me "The Idea is good, but your names are crap.", or "The idea is crap, AND the names are crap." A little discussion wouldn't hurt. (I'm opening myself up to a whole new round of insults here.)
Re: Original The idea is crap, AND the names are crap. When my college decided to drop the sport I competed in (wrestling) because other schools we competed with for students didn't have the sport, I had a question the AD could not answer. "Why do we have to be like them? Why can't we have something they don't?" If your worried about team names, you've got too much time on your hands.
i'm with you on this one, the names are pretty retarted. I don't think they're going to change unless new teams come into the league that happen to have different names or unless MLS stops owning everything. also, naming a team C.A. C.D. F.C. (club atletico, club deportivo, football club, there are others) or something like that would be a little misleading. Most clubs aren't "clubs" in the sense that these other teams are. Most are also kind of social clubs and they have other sports teams, they have buildlings were people go to eat, hang out, whatever. I dunno
OK then, Jesus...Sorry I even brought up the subject...I'll just go hang myself now because I obviously have nothing to offer the world.
Ablei is right. No North American pro sports teams are run like athletic clubs in Europe or South America. There is a parallel thread somewhere in The Beautiful Game that ponders the Americanization of world footy club names (North London Lions for Chelsea, Sao Paolo Saints for Santos, etc.). But when you think about one of the world's greatest derbies, somehow the Mendoza Juniors and the Mar del Plata Silverlakes just doesn't sound right! Mind you, the Miami Fusion used to refer to itself as Fusion FC.
Do you get it people! This is what has been holding MLS back all these years! All we have to do is change the names of our teams and we'll be respected more and our attendance will sore!
Re: OK then, Works for me, but before you do...do tell me this; did you pick DC as your team just because it has a more "traditional" team name? If so, I'd be glad to tie that noose for you.
Don't forget about putting advertisements on the front of the jerseys and February games in Foxboro! Oh yeah, and let's not forget the Cosmos. MSL will never really amount to anything until the Cosmos are back.
Ideas for expansion and names Ok, I decided to take him serious.....to have a serious league we need: 1. single table 2. new names 3. promotion/relegation I decided to take my own stab at some more 'traditional' names. tell me what you think... Arsenal USA Man Utd USA Chelsea USA Charlton USA Liverpool USA Newcastle USA Fulham USA Southampton USA Birmingham USA Bolton USA Tottenham USA Aston Villa USA Middlesbrough USA Everton USA Man City USA Blackburn USA Portsmouth USA Leicester City USA Wolves USA Leeds United USA
Relax I think everybody needs to chill the hell out. First of all, I NEVER said that changing the names would fix the myriad of problems that MLS already has, it's just a small suggestion that I think would make the league a little more appealing. Secondly, I support DC because It's one of the few teams whose front offices has a clue about how to run a team...I actually interned in one MLS front office, and worked for a year in another, and I've seen the complete incompetence of many decision-makers in action. It's not JUST about the names, it's about the entire philosphy of the individual organizations and the league as a whole. But maybe you're right...The league should continue to market to fat baseball fans and 8 year-old-girls rec teams...It's working so well thus far!
And by the way There's an entire thread on the DC team forum about how having John Kerry attend a DC game would do so much for the team and the league. Why don't you guys go kick the ass of whoever posted that one? Of course! I was so misled in actually thinking that changes should be made to the teams themselves...If we just put a bunch of dead-looking jackass politicians in the seats, all of our woes will be over!
Sorry Sorry Denver...I think you have the wrong guy (But thanks for the welcome! At least one person isn't encouraging me to kill myself.) do you think I deserve the reaming that I'm getting on this one?
Re: Sorry A. Lazerbeak was one of the biggest dopes on BS this side of Aimer... B. you do deserve the reaming, because you asked a question about getting cooler sounding names...which is stupid.
Re: OK then, Just ignore them DC-007. You had a question & you asked it. The only ones with nothing to offer the world were the responses, including the moderators.
Re: Sorry no. This topic comes up quite a bit so I think it has merit. I don't think they will or should change the existing team names, but when expansion occurs I would like to see them go with more traditional soccer naming and not WNBA sounding names like Cleveland Force. I am a Dallas Burn fan and believe me 9 years later I still sometimes find myself wondering why they couldn't have come up with something/anything better than that. Maybe after the league is 20 teams the original team names will sound cool retro 90's.
OK, the Smitty take on this: Are the names as good as they could be? No, although thefact that the Metros dropped the god forsaken NY/NJ from their name was a much needed alteration. Can I live with the names and have I gotten used to them? Yes. Will expansion teams have names that sound more like soccer teams? I think so. I think the source of this is actually the internet. Once the internet became an institution and all us soccer dorks could keep close tabs on all the leagues in Europe, it is only natural to want to fit in a little better. We're getting there.
Re: Sorry Well, it is the off-season and we are a little short of things to talk about. But there is absolutely no chance that all the MLS teams will drop their US-style names and take on quasi-EPL-type names. There is a pretty good chance however that Kerry (or any other political candidate) will show up at a DC United games since schmoozing crowds is what they do. So by posting a thread that been over-done already about a subject that's unlikely, yeah you are trolling a bit. But I think you've been met with more humor than reaming.
