I finally got to see an Arsenal game for the 1st time this season on French tv ( with so many french players on the pitch, they couldn't help it i guess, LOL ). I must say i first chose to see it because of that, then i saw what Bergkamp did during this match, and i was astonished by what this player was doing. Emmanuel Petit who was commentating this match for the French tv, just couldn't stop the praises, even though he is a chelsea player. The pass he made to Viera and the moves he executed, i would really be pissed if such a player with still a lot of class, wasn't playing anymore for my country. How does a holland supporter feel about this ? Is he still a player you closely watch ? Doesn't that kind of performance make you wish he was still playing for holland, cause i can't see someone right know having that kind of class in the current team, or is there ?
Bergkamp is in my top five list of best Dutch players ever. I still follow him, also because I support Arsenal. I get the feeling he gets a lot more respect in England than he ever got in Holland though. I'd love to see him in an Arsenal-type role for Holland, but unfortunately that spot's now taken by Rafael van der Vaart who's a great talent btw.
Van der vaart ? Where does he play, and could he be as good as Dennis ? Anyway, in your top 5, i really don't have any objections to that . I wish i had seen Cruff play, everybody seem to be saying only great things about him, Van Basten, Gullit, Than Bergkamp. Hey here's a question for you : Have you ever heard of a player named Johny Repp ?
van der vaart plays for AJAX, like bergkamp did - he can be very magical but he has a long way to go to reach lord dennis - of course i miss him, he's my football hero johnny rep played for AJAX and the ORANJE in the 70's and he was awesome
Both Barcelona and ManUnited apparently want Van der Vaart, so he won't be playing for Ajax for long. Johnny Rep was a true Holland hero.
I was asking that, because well he has also played for St Etienne, a french club with which he reached the former champions league final in the 76, losing to bayern Munich. He seem to be a hero for the people of this generation and also has become a legend in the club. There's even a song that's dedicated to him by a french band called Mickey 3D. Haven't heard it yet. Anyway, i just wanted to know if he was famous in his own country. Looks like it.
I seriously think he's on his way out, deliberately looking for trouble with Koeman so that he has a good excuse to leave at the end of the season.
I first saw Bergkamp play during the 94WC, specifically a second round match between the Dutch and Ireland. My friend and I drove down to Orlando for the match. He was amazing. I started following his career and became an Arsenal supporter the next year when he made the move. He doesn't have the legs he used to but he is still brilliant. This weekend's match is a perfect example. The vision and the touch he displays are beautiful to watch. I'll be gutted when he does decide to retire and I hope that won't be for another couple of years. Even with diminshed playing time he's a leader for Arsenal as all the other players admire and respect him. The two goals I'll always remember are the goal against Argentina in 1998 and the goal against Newcastle in the 2002 FA Cup semi-final. Both of them absolute magic.
There was that one month spell he had with Arsenal when he first won the double with them (was it 96 or 97?). Anyway, he was brilliant then. The five goals awarded for the BBC's goal of the month were all from him, that had never happened before and hasn't happened again since.
July 4, 1994. Did you also go back to Church Street Station to watch the U.S. versus Brazil match? I remember being in an English style pub there with all the Irish and Dutch fans drinking Guinness and watching Tab Ramos get his head bashed in and the U.S. losing in the most lopsided 1 nil match ever. Did we ever even get a shot on goal....I can't remember....too much Guinness I suppose.
we watched the US game back at the hotel then went to church street for evening festivities - we spent most of our night among the ireland fans in one of those bars where everybody sings to the piano players... bark at the moon or something like that
For me , Dennis Bergkamp is right up there after Cruijff & van Basten . Sheer magic on the ball . He's one of those rare players that can turn the game into pure art . I've always said that when the guy decides to quit , he should have a unbelievable good-bye by all the clubs and players he played with . His first touch of the ball is just astonishing , and watch when he shoots at goal . No backlift whatsoever but look at the speed the ball goes ( in ) . If I can catch an Arsenal game , I will , just to see him play . Never ever stopped following him . He's one of my true hero's . And yes , I really am sad he's not playing for the National team anymore . But that's the way it goes , I kind of accepted it , but understand it completely ? ...... No ....... Rafael van der Vaart has the potential of getting as good , but still has to prove many things before he can call himself equal . The way he's playing this season makes one wonder if he'll ever accomplish that , but I for one do hope so .

Van Basten was a fantastic play, but wasn't even the best Dutch player of all time. One word: Cruijff. Bergkamp is one of the greatest passing forwards of all time. And that goal against Argentina at WC 98, fantastic! I raise my glass to Dennis Bergkamp and his really hot wife.
