http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/soccer/10261310.htm If we're saving money on goalkeeping, we could definitely use someone in the midfield who can link between Zavagnin and Wolff/Arnaud. Ekelund would seem to be a perfect fit.
Interesting, but who would we trade to get him? Also, assuming Preki's going to be back next year, I'm not sure how the two players would fit together.
Let's assume Preki will not be back and any contribution is gravy. I'd like to see Preki playing again, but it would be remarkable if not a bit miraculous. Preki is going on 42 and attempting to return from an injury that could end the career of a man half his age. At the very least, we should consider spot duty, not a regular 90 minutes.
Would we actually have to trade someone? Or could is just be a "free agent" acquisition? I could be wrong about the machinations of how players transfer within the MLS system, but why can't we just pick him up? Someone help me here if I'm wrong. edit: I guess I can just help myself. It always helps to read the full article instead of just skimming it before posting . So in light of newly discovered facts, I'm not sure who on our team would be of trade value... Could we somehow convince San Jose to take Diego Walsh for a new midfield partner over with Mulrooney? That would be fantastic, but probably couldn't happen.
would we need to give them someone? or even a draft pick? ive always had at best a vague understanding of what those "future considerations" involved in trades always were, but if san jose just doesnt want him next year that could be a possibility. i know we've done it before (eg preki to miami).
2 Things. 1: According to the article, one of his responses to be being dropped was that he was upset because he, "liked the area." -Think he would feel the same way about KC? (Fnding players who actually like the idea of moving here has always been a challenge, but we tend to get good loyalty from players who do take root (Mo, Preki, Meola)). (-Anyone ever stop to consider how consistently players with families wind up liking it here and staying, while those who don't, don't?). 2. Can someone explain to me why SJ should get anything? -Is it the case that we would need to trade something to get him now but if he is waived, we would have to take our chances with the waiver draft?
i agree. we had walsh/igor/gomez and other players who suck trying to fill this role last year, and wolff/arnaud still played solid. if we actually have an attacking mid with any skill, we're in good shape. neither he nor preki will be able to play 90, so pick him up. he's not going to make tony's slot of $250K, so we've got cap room.
