I recently watched The New Saints: Road to Europe – The Mike Harris Story, which follows a Welsh domestic club attempting to progress in European competition. What interested me most was not simply the football. It was the personalities, internal relationships, ambition and challenges behind a club that operates far away from the financial scale and media attention of the major European leagues. The documentary naturally presents the club and its chairman in a positive light, so some viewers may feel it could have explored more critical perspectives or shown more of the wider Welsh football landscape. However, I thought its strongest moments came when it focused on the people behind the scenes and the amount of work required for a smaller club to compete in Europe. It made me wonder whether documentaries about lesser-known clubs can sometimes be more interesting than films about major teams, because the audience is discovering the characters and story without already knowing the outcome.
