A penalty kick in the 84th minute gave Nebraska Wesleyan a 1–0 win over Westminster and the right to lose to Macalester on Saturday.

So Williams got lucky again...they beat Middlebury in the NESCAC semifinal in OT after pulling the GK in regular time and tying it up in the last three seconds...typical.

Williams Wins NESCAC For JoBeck and Passthebizz, I was at the NESCAC championships last weekend. Williams was indeed fortunate to win the semifinal. The game was back and forth in the first half, but Williams were down a man after the 41st minute and Middlebury gradually exerted the greater pressure. Middlebury should have been able to win after scoring late in the second half. However, Midd failed to pressure service into the box and failed to head out the balls that came into the box. With less than 20 seconds to go, a Midd forward deep in the Williams half foolishly crossed the ball when he should have taken it to the flag (as his team and bench were instructing him). The Williams keeper easily snagged the cross and sent the ball downfield for the scramble leading to the tying goal. On the other hand, Williams deserved to win the final. All three finishes were top class and Williams seemed quicker than Amherst on and off the ball. The first semifinal between Amherst and Bowdoin was a fairly even affair. Amherst subbed a bit more and seemed a little fresher in the second half, especially in the midfield. However, until a rare mistake by Bowdoin's keeper led to the second Amherst goal (2 minutes before the end of the game), I was expecting PKs to decide the game. Based on the semis, I would have rated the teams' play at that stage of the season as follows: 1. Amherst; 2. Bowdoin; 3. Williams; and 4. Middlebury. However, based on the finals as well, my ranking is: 1. Williams; 2. Amherst; 3. Bowdoin; and 4. Middlebury.

Wow Er...wow. http://www.williams.edu/News/sportsinfo/data/men_soccer/2002/20021115-003-dquinn.html And I too was at the NESCAC Semi, and while there was luck clearly at play, there was also hustle and effort as well. The stupid Panthers were already up off the bench to run on the field, and that sort of thing is extremely bad karma. My boy Nick Armington hit one of them punts about 70 yards in the air, ball is settled, and Ryan Olsen pounces on it. Call it luck, but also call it a failure to quit when it would be SO easy to do so. And Richard Stockton sucks as well. Boo yah.
Nebraska Wesleyan 1 Macalester 1 (2OT) (Macalester won 3-2 on PKs) http://sports.luther.edu/news/NCAA1.HTM UW-Whitewater 3 Luther 2 (OT) (Bobby Arsiniega scored all three goals for Whitewater) Final will be played later today...
Macalester beats UWW in a shootout, 1-1, (3-1 pk's). Mac represtenting the MIAC well, even though im not a huge fan. I would like to see them take it to Trinity (tex.), but the likelyhood of that is very slim, Trinity looks to be playing well during the tourny so far with big results, they arent number one in the nation for nothing.
Olé, olé olé olé, olé, olé! I was at both of the Macalester games at Luther this weekend, it was crazy. The college got a school bus to go down to Decorah for the Regionals, a bunch of the most dedicated Mac Army soldiers headed to Luther, our boys are through to the quarterfinals, and we had a damn good time. For the second-round game against Nebraska Wesleyan, we took over one of the sections of the bleachers and went crazy. The Scots had the upper hand early but unfortunately had nothing to show for it. Of course, they would be punished for their poor finishing when Nebraska Wesleyan scored on a set piece with five minutes left in the half. The free kick was swung in from about 35 yards out on the right side, and Michael Longe beat his marker. He was open about 10 yards from goal, Mac keeper Michael Madigan was helpless, he started to come out but Longe turned and snapped a beautiful header into the far side of the net. It was an excellent goal and NWU led 1–0 at the half. In the second half, it was all Mac as NWU put every player behind the ball. The Scots were going all out for the equalizer, but their play inside the box was frustrating. Macalester had eight corners in the second half but couldn't connect. With about 20 minutes left, the Scots started to play with a lot more urgency. Attacking midfielder Nathan Knox, who had been injured late in the first half, started the half slowly but eventually put his game into high gear. He was moved up as the Scots switched to three up front, and Eric Nordstrom, who was a bit banged up, was moved out to the wing. Those moves gave the Scots the spark they needed, as both Knox and Nordstrom began to slice through the NWU with their crafty dribbling. One of those runs led to a free-kick from about 20 yards out with three minutes remaining. Knox hit a real scorcher, it looked as though it took a deflection before it hit the net. The Mac crowd erupted as the game headed to extra time in a most dramatic fashion. There weren't many chances in the overtime periods, but in the first half it looked as though an NWU forward had the whole left side of the net from five yards out and blasted it way over the bar with his left foot. So, the game went to penalties, a carbon-copy of Mac's game against Whitworth last year. This time, there was no referee to ruin Madigan's heroics. The senior keeper stopped the first three penalties (and got a good piece of the fifth one before it barely bounced over the line) and the Scots went through, 3–2. The next day, we struggled to get out of bed but once again made our way on the bus for the trip to Luther. The Scots met UW-Whitewater, who had beaten them 3–0 almost a month ago. Once again, we occupied the stand behind our bench before the game kicked off. Early on, the game looked as though it would be a hard-fought battle as both teams were tackling hard and going forward. However, the game almost got out of hand in the first half. Macalester got five yellow cards in the first half, three on one stoppage (including their coach John Leaney). Three of them were for dissent (but I could understand why Leaney wasn't impressed with the refereeing). From that point, the Scots weren't 100% in the game and Whitewater gained the upper hand. Poppen scored with seven minutes left and the Scots had to figure out another way to come back (and how to get on the referee's good side) in the second half. Ten minutes in, sweeper Stu Peacock found a ball on a set piece and knocked it on the freshman forward Scott Beaver, and his finish from close range meant that we were in for an exciting finish. Both teams had good chances in the second half but the keepers stole the show. Whitewater keeper Dave Madsen made a few close-range saves, and Madigan flew full-stretch to his right to tip a 25-yard blast around the far post. For both teams, it was their second OT game in two days, and this one could have ended early on a few occassions. In the first half, a Whitewater player (I forgot who) cracked one with the outside of his right foot at least 30 yards from goal. It started heading for the far upper-corner but then kept turning to the other side. Madigan stayed with it and tipped it over the bar. In the second half, Scots midfielder Pat Kelly latched on to a diagonal through-ball 15 yards from goal on the right side. He shot for the far post but Madsen lept out, got both hands on it and pushed it away. Superb save. Another round of penalties, and Madigan was the hero once again. He stopped two of them and the second shot was blasted way over the bar. The Scots scored three out of their four to win 3–1 and the celebration began as we all stormed the field. We all had a great time this weekend, and it's incredible that the Scots have made it to the quarterfinals—nobody would have expected this in the beginning of the season. Luther was a good host, and we wanted our team to play theirs so that we could celebrate in front of the home crowd . Their players weren't too thrilled with their loss. A few of them showed up on the far side and cheered for the Scots, and the Luther students that were there had a good laugh at the Mac Army songs. The Scots' reward? Trinity, the #1 team in the nation. It's almost definitely going to be in San Antonio (a shame, they might be a damn good team, but if they play us at the frozen tundra of Macalester Stadium in St. Paul in front of at the very least 1,000 fans...), so I don't know if I can make this road trip. WE ARE THE SCOTS!
Arcadia beats Williams on PK's Arcadia joins the Final 8 by defeating Williams on PK's 5-4 after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. The Mid-Atlantic Region now has 3 representatives in the Final 8 after not being given a region of their own in this year's tournament. Messiah won 3 games in 4 days to take the South Region title. Drew emerged from the Metro Regional. And now Arcadia knocks off the best of New England. The "mighty" NJAC (Rowan & Stockton) goes 0-2 in the tournament! Williams loses. Messiah continues to advance despite the toughest draw of the tournament. And the Mid-Atlantic shows they are the strongest region in the country this year. A pretty good tournament so far, if you ask me.
Damn. Messiah is on a big-time run and Arcadia is showing us something. Drew had an easy draw, though. -- Nevermind what I just wrote about Mac-Trinity... the game will be in San Antonio this Saturday at 1 p.m.
Off the NCAA tournament topic again, but a result none the same, Rochester beat Plattsburgh 3-0 to win their third ECAC title in three years: http://www.ecac.org/site/Championsh...sion_III_Men's_Northeast_Soccer_Championship An interesting side-bar article in Rochester's Campus Times school paper. The author claimed Rochester got snubbed by the NCAA ("must also feel especially slighted by the NCAA, who promised UR an at-large birth if they had a successful end to their regular season. UR responded with four straight victories to end the season, but the NCAA did not live up to their end of the bargain. " ) I love college writers. Sportcenter here I come! Anyone else's team out there promised a bid? Here's the article: http://www.campustimes.org/news/324311.html
