I've finally convinced my parents to get a satellite dish as my graduation present. My question to you guys is which company will give me the most soccer for the least amount of money? In other words, are their ways for me to get around having to buy packages when I only want one or two of the channels in each package? Say I wanted to get Fox Sports World, GolTV, Univision, Telemundo, Galavision and Telefutura. First is all that possible to get on one dish. I've heard that it might be hard to get Telefutura if you're not in an area where it is available over the air. Also is it possible to get ESPN International here? Could you guys give me an idea of how much my parents are gonna have to shell out? The main reason I'm getting dish like most of you is to see more soccer so thats why I ask these questions. Thanks in advance.
About $50 a month... If you want the 150 channel package on Dish, that's what it's going to cost you. Since you posted on a soccer site, we can assume that you want Fox Sports World and GOL TV. The only way you can get them is to take the 150 channel thing. Equipment and installation are pretty much free and that includes two receivers. Make sure you tell them you want the local channels and they'll put in the extra dish immediately and won't have to come back. By the way, Direct TV and Dish are so superior to cable that your parents will wonder why they didn't do it sooner.
If you get the lowest base package of DirecTV Para Todos(with sports package and local channels), you'll get Univision, Galavision, Telemundo, Fox Sports World, Fox Sports World en Espanol, and ESPN Deportes(International) for about $50 a month. On Dish, you'll get GolTV, Galavision, Univision, Telemundo, Telefutura, and Fox Sports World en Espanol for $32 a month on Spanish package(don't believe its including local channels). On top 150 you'll get Galavision, Univision, Fox Sports World, and Telefutura(according to website).
The Top 150 package now includes GOL TV in English. This is an exclusive to Dish Network and will not be available for DirecTV. Dish Network has yet to update their site. This became available on June 11th on channel 407. If you are interested for $10 extra per month you can get RIA International. It is the italian channel which has a lot of soccer as well. You will need that second dish then.
I've looked at the packages and Dish Network's Top 150 looks like what we'll be getting. $43 bucks isn't bad at all. The only question I have is why is Telemundo so hard to come by on both Dish and DirectTv??? Does Univision have some sort of contract with them or what? I would assume that with all the other channels I wouldn't be missing much not having Telemundo.
You're not missing too much without Telemundo, mainly Mexican National Team games. DISH has some relationship - it's on their Latino package, but not yet on the 100 or 150. You can PM "da_cfo" if you really want the details on this. And the word is that you CAN get RAI (Italian channel) without getting a second dish installed, if you've got another $10 a month to blow on Serie A.

Telemundo: not now, but later You won't be missing much for now BUT for next Summer Olympic Games. Athens 2004, men's soccer will air in the USA exclusively on Telemundo, while Women's Soccer will air on MSNBC and CNBC. So it might not be bad to signup for A LA CARTE-RAI International on Dish for $9.99 a month to lock in that rate before the mad rush next year. Yes, one DOES NOT NEED a second dish nor Dish500 setup to receive RAI International.
I'm confused. A mad rush to sign up for RAI International??? What does that have to do with Telemundo and the Olympics? RAI International certainly won't be televising any of the Olympics. NBC would never allow that to happen. BTW, I've had RAI for 5 years, and the rate has not gone up in that whole time.
Just another note... I can't speak for where everyone else is, but for me (in denver) Telemundo is available as a local channel, I think it's 14. At the Dish Network site you can look up your area and it might well be that's how you need to pick up Telemundo.
As somebody pointed out once, the way to deal with Telemundo on Dish is, if there is something important that's on it exclusively, then call and sign up for the Dish Latino package for a day (for a game) or two weeks (Olympics) then cancel. Even including the $5 down-grade fee, it's still cheaper than most pay-per-view events.
The SportsPak is all the regional sports nets, but -significantly - all out-of-area pro sports and most major college sports are blacked out. So there's not much left. Some minor college football/basketball, some college soccer, a few local A-League and WUSA telecasts, college football coaches' shows, etc. There are also EPL games shown on several days' delay, but if you get AT150, you'll get same-day coverage of those on FSW. I used to get it, but I stopped after Dish picked up Fox Sports World.
Re: Just another note... If Telemundo had a Detroit affiliate, I wouldn't be asking . We've got somewhat of a large Hispanic population in Detroit, not like Miami or LA or Denver or anything, but a decent size, but its not really enough to warrant our own Telemundo affiliate. Instead we get CBC. SueB, I've heard that people call and order the package for a day or a week and that's what I was thinking of doing if Oliver's prophecy about the Olympics on Telemundo comes true. I would hate to see that happen, but I wouldn't be surprised with the way NBC looks at soccer. Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate everyones help with this, and its now looking like we'll get the dish sometime after July 1. Not in time for the Confederations Cup, but in time for the Gold Cup. My brother moves to Virginia then and my parents are stressing out about him leaving, so we struck that agreement. My Dad is actually looking forward to getting the dish as well. Thanks again!
If one doesn't want to blow $10 a month to watch Totti, Del Piero, Vieri, etc., one can consider blowing $5 a month on RTPi. RTPi can be had for $5 if you subscribe to anyone of Dish's packages (AT50/100/150). Even if you are not interested in Porto/Benfica/Sporting (two 1a. Liga games per week), you can still get the Seleccao, catching Figo and Rui Costa on all the friendlies until Euro 04... Of course, you need a 2nd dish pointing to 61.5W or 148W to catch RTPi.
Please note that you get Series A with GolTV. Has rights for the Italian League and you can watch it in Dish's AT150. (and also in Dish Latino Packages). If fact, GolTV usually programed the best 3 Calcio games per weekend, and will continue doing it when Series A resumes.
Nope. Goltv doesn't have the rights to the Sunday morning game that appears on RAI International. That's why Goltv only has 3 games on its menu (all time USA): - the Saturday game - the alternate Sunday morning game - the Sunday afternoon game, live, which appears on RAI International delayed while TeleLatino in Canada carries all 4 games. However, the RAI International game also appear delayed on the International Channel and on some OTA ethnic channels in New York and Philadelphia, on the same day. Is the Sunday morning game on Goltv necessarily better than the Sunday morning game on RAI International? Nope. In other words, if you want the full menu of Serie A in the U.S., and if you live in New York, Philly or your cable system carries the International Channel, - Goltv on Dish if not, then - get both Goltv and RAI International from Dish Network, or - get a grey market Canadian DBS and subscribe to TeleLatino.
Note that Gol TV has first pick of the Sunday morning game. RAI Int'l gets to pick a match after Gol TV has made its choice.
Well, seriously, have you actually seen their contract? I've noticed some not so attractive games (one that doesn't involved the top 4 - Juv, Milan, Inter, Lazio) on RAI International, but I've also noticed some not so attractive games on the 06:00 PT timeslot on TeleLatino/Goltv. So how do you know who had the first choice unless you have actually seen the contract? and I don't believe for a second that you have.
