Gotta say that if this gets "testy" it's going to hurt the game. I'm in it for the fun and can live with flaws as they exist. I am all for improving the game but not at the expense of others who are not going to be comfortable with change they deem detrimental. I would think we should be getting fired up about the draft but this seems to be deflecting that focus at the moment. I also now believe I may not have access to Google docs at work but won't know until I get back to school in a couple of weeks. Without all of the analysis and so on, I think the original idea of this was to make it easier/ therefore more enjoyable to play. I don't think it needs to become a wedge.
The advantage for our league was that Lobo actually had a good team...and being the prick he is he was able to shit talk for longer than normal.
Actually I think SR kept their in-season conversation in their Draft Thread. Does everyone understand that Michael thinks this is a terrible idea? Just checking, haha! Nobody can compete with eight consecutive posts, but I'll try! I think the single spreadsheet idea is a winner, and the minimum of commitment to make things fun for everyone. One could easily bemoan the bureaucratic hell of shuffling the cards while playing poker, or bringing a meal to a pot-luck. But those are things we do because for everyone, collectively, it makes the game fairer (in the case of a card shuffle) and the meal yummier (if it's my brother's wife bringing food to the pot-luck). And if they get ahold of me top stop me bringing my awful spanakopita it's even better for all! Now, realistically, google doc site crashing has about the same probability as three meteorites hitting you at once from different directions, landing, and falling into chunks that spell out the words 'djangone wins league!' Really, I checked. This is google we're talking about here, a company with oh a few layers of quality-of-service redundancy. That's in the US, of course, can't speak for Europe, which may be better or worse. FPL will still be laggard on gamedays, that's a guarantee.
I've tried to say something productive here but I'm so frustrated by the circular nature of this "debate" that I'm speechless. 30 managers, 30 votes, end of.
...teary eyed... thats the nicest thing you ever said about me...though tbf, I am "able to shit talk for longer than normal" even when I have the worst team in the League see year before
I am leaning towards changing my vote to do as we did, but voluntarily keep an updated google sheet, and those who do not participate have to share a 100' ft studio with a drunk cigar smoking Joey Barton, Bellemy and that long haired blond kid Savage
I don't think it is getting testy. If Michael or other don't google (for philosophical or access problems) then others will do it for them. Plus it was nice to see the Lobo and other trash talk starting. When can we get the draft started anyways?
It seems like the issue is decided anyway. It simply can't be made mandatory if some people can't access it conveniently due to travel or firewalls. At the same time, if some people want to keep up a google docs database for convenience, that's cool. Out of courtesy, I'll update it for their convenience but I will still view the gamesite forum as the official record and the league thread on bigsoccer as the place for discussion. So long as we each cover for each other and update the document when others can't or don't, it should provide a useful reference. What is the vote tally anyway?
To hopefully bring a little bit of excitement and levity to the thread, I will note that the site has opened for registration and the initial player list and values are up! See: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/playerlist.html Lampard and Gerrard have the highest values at 12.5, Arshavin has been moved to the midfield, while Vidic shows at 8.0 and Torres at 11.5 as the most pricey at their respective positions. I'm sure others will have comments and notes about these prices, so I'll just point out how shrewd I was to grab bargain boy Baines last year, who is now recognized as a fantasy stud with a 6.5 price to match. Sorry for the digression, but it was actually somewhat exciting and I have nothing more to add on this topic. (At least for now).
Oh, and check out these changes to the rules at http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/new.mc Talk about messing with a good thing for no reason at all (and rewarding people who are so lazy they forget to make a transfer)! Next thing you know they'll be getting rid of randomly awarded bonus points and cross-linking teams to f----ing googledocs..... 1. Private Head to Head Leagues In addition to a public head to head league, you'll be able to set-up head to head leagues with your mates. Every Gameweek there's a real match to be played and temporary bragging rights to be earned! Optionally you can end your season with a knock-out cup between the top teams, nothing will be decided until Gameweek 38! 2. Emergency Captain Never again will rotation policies or last minute injuries leave your team leader less! In the event of your captain not playing in a Gameweek a new captain, either the player with the highest form or price value at the start of the gameweek, will be selected based on your emergency captain strategy. Why no vice captain? With the emergency rule you guarantee a captain, with a vice captain you still run the risk of both players not playing. 3. Use your free transfer next Gameweek Don't need to make a free transfer or forget one week? If you don't use your free transfer in a Gameweek then it will carry over to the next Gameweek. The unused transfer will only be carried over for one Gameweek though, the wildcard will still be the only way to change your team completely at no cost once a season.
As a new member, I have been hesitant to express an opinion since I am not changing from an "old" comfortable method to a "new" method. But I'll make a comment anyway. I really do not care what is adopted as long as the time stamp on google docs is irrelevant. The only determining factor as to who gets a player is based on the time stamp on the FPL forum no matter what happens in what time frame on google docs. So if someone can't access google docs from work or because of internet traffic, it shouldn't matter much as long as it gets updated eventually. Personally, I'll keep my own local spreadsheet of rosters and transactions to make myself comfortable that everything is up to date. Even if the google doc is up to date with player transfers, the salaries will be changing every week making the google doc useless for that info. So ... I have no issues with whatever is decided assuming the time stamp on google is not a determining factor for anything.
I love the transfer carryover. More strategy. Just for the record, I don't want to be pigeon-holed as a Google Docs messiah. I only began looking at it because the transfer option vote-leader is Google Mandatory, and I never used it before. Hopefully me finding out about the Google timestamp feature(s) will make it easier to move forward, whether that means using Google or not. I follow the premise that information is never a bad thing.
I know this hasn't anything to do with the thread but the bolded part is manna from heaven for people with a high first round selection, especially with no Ronaldo to drool over.
just a chomping at the bit. Any reason to not start a bit earlier? I guess just two more positions for Dust
"chAmping at the bit" You are among the 99.9% who mis-use this metaphor. Even Google says "Did you mean: chomping at the bit". Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm a finicky (some might say "anal-retentive") writer.
Yeah, what a relief to finally have some actual scouting to do! Some surprising prices - looks like some pretty serious inflation in the off season. Ireland - 9.0
By this post I'm accepting your confirmation to return for this season. I sent you an email and got no response. Please send me a PM with your latest contact information. Thanks and welcome back.
All the prices seem way up. Maybe it was the same last season. It does lead to some self congratulation if you drafted Ireland last year for 5.5
