I know we have discussed the position a bit before, and I think that there is a lot of support on the board for bringing Dir into this spot.

But, if some miracle happens and the FCD organization does create this position, what about Wynalda? Freed up from ESPN, no other network is going to pay him enough, good talent evaluator and knows the league and its rules.

    Just a thought...

Oh yeah...can't see that backfiring at all. Let me ask you this...would you ever in your life want to be a head coach with that guy peering over your shoulder every game? No way......if/when we have to move beyond Morrow, hiring the next guy is going to be a nightmare with that schmuck in the FO.

No kidding. Besides, why does anyone think that he knows anything about putting together an actual team? Sure, he popped off a lot about it in the booth, but it's easy to be an expert when you're a TV commentator.

I think that Dave Dir would be great in the role, however. The guy can put together a team and I've always got the impression that he's not terribly interested in being a coach in this league anymore.

I do think he could be an effective coach of the front line. Whether we liked him or not, the guy played in Germany and set high standards for the National Team. Most importantly, he was a pretty solid finisher, which most American players need help with.

Just because you can play doesn't mean you can coach. All sorts of great players turn out to be mediocre at best coaches. (...including the one in charge of SUPER CLUB!!!!11oneone) Meanwhile, all sorts of mediocre players become great coaches.

I could be persuaded if I ever saw the guy demonstrate any on-field leadership (like Nowak or Pareja or Preki did), but that was something that you never saw from Eric Wynalda.

Didn't Wynalda get tagged as one of those "can start a fight in an empty room" guys during his playing career. Not usually the type that end up becoming good coaches.

Teamwork....not really his forte. He was fired, in part, because he threaten to hurt a fellow ESPN employee.

When it's Jim Rhome, I'll give him a free pass.

Ohh, other than their opinion on soccer, I'm pretty sure there are some Jim Rome types in the FCD lockerroom and FO.

Meh. I don't see two Jim Rhome's in the same organization. The egos would simply not fit. And who takes people like him seriously, anyhow? I mean, Jim Rhome caters to the ultimate "I failed as a jock but am still better in my own mind than any of these over-paid sissies" kind of mentality. That's why Wynalda and Rhome can exist on the same network, but never the same broadcast, let alone Christmas party. MLS, to me, is still very much about people who love soccer; there's (currently) not enough money floating around MLS for people with the stupid-big egos to work for the cut-rates that MLS offers.

God, and don't get me going on about Rhome personally. I'll just say this: if MLS comes to the all-smack-all-the-time kind of leagues that NBA and NFL have become, I'll find another league to follow.

    May I suggest the WNBA?

Yeah, I don't think that type is very common in MLS, but there certainly is fair number of Primma Donnas running around.

Nah, I could never become so passionate as the average WNBA fan about a sport. I mean, living and dying with every basket and/or pregnancy of your favorite Houston... errr.... Comet(???) and somesuch would just be too emotionally draining for me.

Wynalda should start his own business. He's the kind of guy that doesn't work well under people. He may have the soccer knowledge but he doesn't have the social skills to do the job. Eric got in fights with every team he played for.

Is there a lot of money in being an ahole consultant?

He's already halfway there. He just needs to learn how to consult.

What's to learn? You tell someone else why they suck and then leave them wondering how to actually change that. I do that all the time now.
