that may be it. i used to work near there and occassionally we had a luncheon at that place. of course when i am in clarendon i usually end up at the Kabob Bazar, i really love their food. there lunch specials are an incredible value--usually some kind of kabob or a persian stew, rice, soda, bread, veggies for under $6! crap, i am making myself super hungry. i ate at two places in southern maryland recently. the first was solomons pier in solomons--it is on a pier and extends out into the river. we ate outdoors which has a more limited menu and the service was marginal. though my companions rave about their crab cakes. my wife and i also went down to st. mary's landing, right on the 5 the other day. it is a pretty old fashioned place. my wife got the two largest crabcakes i have ever seen (i eat nothing that comes out of the water) and said they were good. i got a prime rib that was ok. and of course i ate my weekly lunch at 5 guys, still the best burger i know in the dc area.
I went to The Poseidon in Del Mar, CA tonight (http://www.poseidonrestaurant.com/content.htm), and saw the face of God in my half-pound gourmet cheeseburger smothered with mushrooms, onions, and bacon. My first in over three years - I feel like a born-again carnivore. I'm going back ASAP. As in tomorrow.
I am going to try that place out (just for that cheeseburger you described) when I go to San Diego later this year, even though I am not much of a meat person. Do you know of any good Mexican restaurants there? Thanks in advance.
I'm not, either - in case I didn't hint strongly enough in my previous post, I've been vegan for a good number of years. The Poseidon is really, really nice - I took my (then) sweetheart to the restaurant next door for Steak & BJ Day this year, Jake's (http://www.jakesdelmar.com/), and I'm thinking we should have gone to The Poseidon instead. When you say Mexican, do you mean like a nice sit-down place, or a smaller joint that serves really amazing authentic food? There's a heap of "fusion" places in the sit-down category that are very good (Epazote's in Del Mar, Candela's downtown, the Prado at Balboa Park), and lots of little corner shops staffed by immigrants in the latter category. Roberto's on Carmel Valley Road is a family favorite for the HUGE burritos, and so is Chilango's Mexico City Grill on University Ave. in Hillcrest - more mole than you can shake a stick at. Great people-watching, too, if you get a table outside.
The first Indian place I ever went to was in Georgetown, though I don't remember what I had or how much it cost. Best Indian food I've had was in Gibraltar.
DoctorJones24-I do remember an decently priced Indian in Georgetown but I have not been there in about a decade (I am pretty sure the place is still there but the name escapes me right now). Ceebs-I just got back from San Diego. I am sorry to report that I did not try any of the places that you mentioned. With kids and in-laws one cannot really go to trendy places. One day we went to San Diego Zoo in the morning on the way back we stopped in Old Town and had lunch at Casa Bandini. Talk about a tourist trap! The food there was worse than any Mexican restaurant I have tried in the Washington DC area. The following day we went to Seaworld with the in-laws. On the way back since it was late we decided to treat them to Mexican on the condition that they pick the restaurant. Since it was close to SeaWorld they decided on picking a restaurant in Old Town. This time we went to Casa Guadalajara. The food was good, the Mariachi was good, the Margarita's were birdbath sized, so we had a good time. Considering we were staying only a few miles away from Del Mar we should have tried Epazote's. Maybe next time, when our girls are older and more mature, we will venture out a little father. By the way San Diego is a beautiful city and we will be back!
These folks cook great center-cut sirloin. Which was a good thing because they served up something that resembled horseradish but tasted like something completely different. The steak tasted fine without it. Silver Fox in Grapevine, TX is comparable to Tavern on the Green. Great Three-Forks salad, filets, and asparagus. La Calle Doce in Oak Cliff (Dallas, TX) serves excellent Mexican seafood. Around the corner, El Ranchito serves up very authentic Norteno food. This is where I like to take out-of-towners. Beware, the mariachis are really loud and don't take many breaks. Steel in Oak Lawn (Dallas, TX) serves the best Asian fusion I've ever had. But it is very trendy and it's hard to get a table, even on a weekday.
The Roberto's he mentioned is a must stop for some damn good AND cheap mexican food. They are all over the place in SD and every one I ate at was great. I swear I ate at a Roberto's 3-4 times a week when I lived in SD. Also, in Ocean Beach there is a great little hamburger place called Hodad's (Hope I spelled that right) right along the strip of bars and shops on the main stip there. Easily the best burgers I've ever had.....get the bacon cheesburger, it's amazing. Also (i'm told) the veggie burgers are equally fine. And who can skip In-N-Out? There are no better fast food burgers and fries and shakes...how McD's can stay open with In-N-Out's all over the place is beyond me.
We tried the famous Pocahontas pancake house in Virginia Beach. Worst pancakes I have ever had, and I had them in several continents.
