We're on it. Does anyone have a problem with CSC that they would like us to address?

Not allowing whistles in the stands...I know this is really MLS policy but still, a footie game with no whistles is like a porn move with no T&A

Late last year, MLS instituted a policy of no whistles in the stands and I was almost forcibly removed from the BArra Brava section. Apparently, in another MLS game, one team stopped playing because they had heard a whistle which had come from the stands and this resulted in them being scored upon. Hence no whistles in the stands.

As have I, so it was much to my displeasure that I was rather rudely asked to surrender my whistle to Event Staff, hence my almost removal...luckily Oscar was able to intervene.

Just to add another voice...I was told to put away my whistle in Barra Brava towards the end of the season. When they told me two games in a row, I stopped bringing it.

 

this is exactly the kind of thing that must be addressed and will be at the meeting. CSC has no understanding of football traditions and how they are done and MLS has little respect for them, both on the field and off. this needs to be stressed.

 

While whistles in the stands may be tradition at some stadiums, it's an obvious nuisance for the players. No stadium employee should ever be rude when asking that the whistles stop, however I certainly can see the argument that they don't belong. Pack an extra cow bell or something.

A samba whistle shouldn't confuse any player paying attention to the game. I remember Jaime pulling up in Tampa once because he heard a whistle and thought he was offside. It was a hard whistle from the stands exactly like the ref's, but it came from the stands, not from the field. Tampa had repeated instances of this whistling, yet never appeared to stop it -- home field advantage?

If we must go the route of prohibiting whistles, I wonder whether a whistle pass system could be enabled so that samba whistles and the like would be legally played during the match (they are ususally played in the concourse during the drum circle anyway).

I can't buy the argument that whistles in the stands are confusing to players. Players concentrating on the match should have no trouble, and if in doubt, play through. If the ref objects, indicate an obvious whistle was heard. The ref will forgive once.

Refs should also make their whistle distinct and perhaps the USSF could custom make whistles for the pro refs. But leave the paying customers alone.

Well that's a good point Tom. I just mean whistles that sound just like a refs. I just don't think that falls under home field advantage or good fan support. I don't know what a samba whistle is but if it does sound different than there shouldn't be a problem with that.

When you are spinning around, possibly offsides, and you hear a whistle, I don't think it's entirely the player's job to play through. That's asking a lot. Imagine how pissed we'd be as fans if an opponent was blown offsides but played through and took a shot because he wasn't 100 percent certain if the whistle came from the stands or the ref. We'd give him no end of $hit.

It might be in countries South of us, but not in England. Not a whistle or instrument for that matter at any of the grounds I have visited over the years. chanting, singing, and whistling with your mouth sure, but not ref, samba or any other type of whistle.

Personally I think they are very rude and distracting to players and fans. There have been times when i heard a whistle and thought it came from the field but it came from the stands and was confused why play hadn't stopped. I have also seen players been confused also.

If we want our own identities how about we drop the whistles since they do that in other countries and use harmonicas....haven't heard any supporters using harmonicas

 

When did i say it was? I was commenting on a previous post about the whistle blowing tradition at some stadiums. The whistle doesn't have to be deliberate to be confusing, it may be a coincidence that someone blows a whistle in keeping time with the beat and it has an effect. I find whistles rude and annoying, a personal preference, you want to blow one fine, I just don't like it. Play a triangle, a zither, accordian, xylophone, harmonica, dulcimer, euphonium, glockenspiel or some other concussed idiophone, just lay off the whistle.

 

My personal feeling is that whistles in the stands are retarded. I'm all for drums, cowbells, whatever, but whistles are friggin' annoying and can cause confusion on the field of play, which as fans of the game we should all want to avoid. Instead of wasting your breath on a whistle, try joining in the chants.

Now there's a thought. If I played mine at a game, I don't think anyone would help pull the Security Staff off of me!
