After Donovan scored, it looks like Dempsey booted the ball into the stands. Didn't see it until ESPN showed their overhead axis view during Sportscenter.

Dempsey's trying his best to get a card in this tournament and the refs just won't give it to him.

    Saw it.

I wonder if the person that caught it gave it back? Can you imagine having that ball on display in your home??!??

Hopefully Landon got it back b/c that is a special one.

well it would have really sucked if he picked up a yellow with 2 minutes to go in the game for no good reason -- especially since yellow cards don't reset until after the quarterfinals. if you don't care, you're free to skip over the thread

I didn't say I didn't care...I was asking because I wasn't sure if it mattered. I didn't realize it was a cardable offense. I figured it was different from regular play because everyone is off celebrating anyway, it wouldn't constitute delay of game (like kicking the ball after an offside call).

Thank you tell me it is cardable (at least I assume by your response you are saying it is with certainty). But relax and stop being a douche and assuming I don't care, I just didn't know.

Sorry about that then. Usually in most BS threads there's a post on the first page along the lines of "this doesn't matter, why did you post this." I assumed you were filling that role. Apologies.

And no, I'm not certain it's cardable when there's a celebration that long. But it still seems like a pretty silly thing to do, and a less experienced ref could have been annoyed by it.

no problem, I've been on BS since 1999 (I lost my password to my first ID around late 2005, hence the 2006 ID), so I realize that happens, and I probably could have clarified my statement, so my fault too. Just would be odd to see a ref give a card out for that, so I didn't think it mattered. It's not like it is specifically in the FIFA rulebook like taking the shirt off is. I've seen many more outlandish celebrations that went uncarded as long as the shirt stayed on, so I didn't realize kicking the ball would be an issue.

They are playing a multiple ball system. If they were playing a single ball it would really be an issue.

Yeah I saw that.... I would be a little pissed off if I was Landon though, I would want that ball!! Also, have you noticed that Jozy has gone and got the ball a couple times when other people have scored? Last Friday after Michael scored he ran over and got the ball...there are pictures of him freaking out with it in his hands haha. I wonder why Clint didn't grab it for Landon?

I saw the thread title and assumed it was referring to the free kick he took.

another reason not to skip the thread...maybe it was talking about that free kick...which was poor, but typical of the Jabulani in South Africa. Can't blame him for the poor free kick, just for the decision to shoot it. I can't recall many/any free kicks this WC from that distance that went on goal with accuracy and pace. It was a poor decision to shoot from there.

I don't know why Dempsey takes kicks near the penalty area. I can't remember him hitting a good one recently. Maybe I have a short memory.

seconded. He did hit a good one for Fulham this year if I remember, but that was early in the season and not recently. He's a threat at times, but from there in that situation I'd rather just have a Landon ball into the box.

did anyone else see Clint Dempsey get punched in the face by the Algerian Captain #4. It was ugly. I hope that MFcker gets hit by a severe penalty for it.

I just watched the ESPN World Cup Live (30 minute daily show) from the 23rd on my DVR. The showed the goal replay from the ESPN Axis camera (overhead shot). First, you are awestruck by the quality of the throw from
    Howard. Simply beautiful.

I watched Deuce after the goal, he does not kick the ball into the stands, he absolutely THUMPS it into the stands! It was left footed, and hit from very near the post as he comes out of the goal to catch up to Donovan/Findley, who are sprinting to the corner flag. Since he hit it from the shadow of the goal, it's a long way to the stands, but I'm thinking he got it there for sure...

Yeah, he murdered that goal. He put all 90+ minutes of frustration into that kick.
